    Welcome to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com.Today, Andy gets a look at the Dyno My Roto by Keeley Electronics. The Dyno My Roto pays tribute to the classic Dytronics CS-5 rack chorus. The CS-5 and Dyno My Roto both feature an impossibly lush studio-quality triple chorus effect that was used on countless records in the 1980s. This sound consists of a three-dimensional chorus tone that has yet to be replicated until now. The Dyno My Roto breaks new ground in the tri-chorus arena by adding a Texture knob, which changes the modulation waveform to sine wave, square wave or triangle wave and anything in between. The Dyno My Roto doesn't stop there, giving you two other modes to satisfy your inner tweaker. The Rotary mode gives you authentic rotating speaker sounds without having to schlep a Leslie cabinet everywhere, and the Texture control adds yet another dimension to the sound. In this mode, the Texture control adjusts the distance of the microphone from the cabinet in this virtual Leslie setup. Lower Texture settings give your tone room to breathe, with more open, roomier sounds while cranking the Texture approximates a tremolo with the microphone inches from the cabinet. The final mode is Rotoflange, which gives you a sweet-sounding flanger featuring a classic negative feedback sound for that "other" '80s modulation tone. Turning the Texture knob to the right introduces feedback, which increases the resonance and volatility of the flanger. Keeley has also included a Level control to combat any perceived volume loss. And like all Keeley pedals, the Dyno My Roto is made by Robert's team of minions right here in the USA.

    I'm a huge fan of Keeley effects pedals but I have to say that I was a bit disappointed after I purchased this particular pedal. I mean it's on me, I bought it online and went off of You Tube demos to help make my decision. Why this pedal isn't stereo is a headscratcher considering the type of sounds you would expect from a Roto Vibe/Chorus type effect pedal. Also, I was surprised at how noisy it is. Maybe I got a lemon, but I wouldn't recommend this pedal if you'regoing for a Roto Vibe type sound. Having been kinda long winded, I'll still purchase Keeley effects because they really are great sounding and well made. I really do think I got a 🍋

      I don't like the vibe setting at all. I didn't buy it for that, but I think it's bad. I honestly don't like the chorus as much either. Doesn't seem to play well with single coils, especially in a mix. When I hook a hum up to it I like it more. Gonna dry it on my bass rig, but I think I will ultimately sell it.

    I'm really excited about this one. It seems that most people like the more warmer chorus (like the Keeley Seafoam), but this is the chorus for me. Cold. Like the Cars Heartbeat City!
    And for all the haters of the 80s: just because legacy acts like Dylan (every 80s album except Oh Mercy) and the ex-Beatles struggled in the 80s, doesn't mean it was a crappy decade for music. Lot's of artists that started in the 80s or entered the decade with early in their careers were great. E.g. Prince, Pet Shop Boys, Simple Minds, U2, Madonna, and hip hop in general.
    I'm not arguing that the 80s has to be everyone's cup of tea, but it was a pretty sharp break from the history of the classic rock era of the 60s and 70s. A ton of new avenues of music were suddenly being explored.

    I would love to see a stereo version. There's the Fulltone TERC but there's been quality control issues with it, and Mike at fulltone is a nightmare to deal with (I've had two professional studio owners with major label credits get shit from him when they need repairs because he blames everyone when his shit breaks) so being that there's a high chance I'll need repair and I don't want to deal with him, I'd skip the TERC.
    There's Shiva's "The Wave" which actually sounds better than the TERC but it's rare and the maker is in Italy and it seems like it's close to impossible to find one in the states. I just want a great stereo version of the Tri Chorus.

    • @neonether
      @neonether 2 роки тому

      There's no alternative to the TERC. If you understand why the original TSC was able to produce the tones it did, you'll realize it can't be reproduced in its glory in simple pedal format. The TERC is an actual reproduction, not a 'clone' or a copy or whatever. It's the only way to bring the TSC back to life in full stereo euphoria. There's a UAD plugin now, 4 years after this comment, but it falls short if you're comparing the two. It's great for what it is, if I had no comparison, I'd be pleased for the price.

  • @timwhite5562
    @timwhite5562 7 років тому

    I like the idea of these in one pedal, it's just it's execution that worries me about buying one. I have use for all these effects, if I was to use one it'd probably be the rotary for that David gilmour lead, though I'd need to use another flange too. I've tried pedals that try to cover more than 1 effect, none of them were keepers. The only one I have that I use is a Boss CE2 WAZA, but that's a chorus and vibrato which is easy to do, I've converted chorus pedals myself to do it, you're just removing the dry signal from the chorus.
    I had a couple Fulltone ChoralFlange. I really liked the flange on it, it's a pretty subtle flange, which I prefer, but if I need more flange it didn't really have it, for that I used a Homebrew flange, but not for long, it was too much, and WAY too big and took up like 3 pedals worth of real estate, I don't use flange enough to dedicate that much space. I found the ChoralFlange's chorus to be terrible sounding. ironically,I bought it because I had a digital multi chorus/flange pedal simulators on it and the ChoralFlange was one. I really liked it so I bought a real one. The ironic thing was that while it sounded good as a digital Sim, the real analog pedal sounded metallic and digital.
    I'm using an EHX Electric Mistress now and I really like it, especially the freeze function that can give me a quasi "wah half cocked", or an out of phase type tone. but it's really big and while great for classic flange, it's missing something for more modern sounds. I was loaned a Toadworks Howard Leese Barracuda flange. that's my favorite so far. it's amazing in that it's really good subtle to hard flanger, but also tonally transparent in that it keeps they integrity of my guitar and amp. The issue with it is that's it's like $400+, and I can't see spending that much on an effect I don't use that much. I have an MXR M134 stereo analog chorus that I love in the effects loop. The dual tone stack let's me dial it in for both my Fender and Gibson guitars, as well as running into my Dumble ODS clone and Marshall Plexi clone (though that doesn't have a loop). Id still use the original Boss CE2 (not the WAZA) with it. I always used that into the front of the amp. it has either a mid bump, or slight volume bump, what it is if my amp is at the edge of breakup, it's enough to push it over the edge, the WAZA doesn't, and most flange give a volume drop.
    I guess for$170 new I can give it a try, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. again, I just don't seem to have luck with analog modulation pedals that try to cover more that one effect more than chorus/vibrato.

    • @RobertKeeleyTV
      @RobertKeeleyTV 7 років тому +9

      It's to make a very affordable package. Since most people don't switch between Chorus, Rotary, and Flanger in one song, it proves to be practical. Another foot switch would add another $50 to $100 to the cost depending on what functions you wanted, like scrolling through 3-8 different effects and then a corresponding indicator system. Since I don't think you'd buy That package, I didn't design that one, but rather this one. RK

      *this is a cool pedal from the standpoint that for recording, its 3 in one, or you can make it function as a different effect on a different song (if you have time to switch that stuff without boring the audience, in a hardcore-type show in darkly lit dive-bars maybe not possible hah) But honestly, right now im not in a position to afford ANYTHING except food to eat hence my complaining, so dont mind me, but to be honest, i was really under the impression that having a simple second switch that just cycles between the 3, keeping the same settings, would only add maybe 10$ to price. No extra LED, only the function of what the switch is currently performing but in a rotating selection with a single extra footswitch. But thats my assumption that it would only be that simple as a know-nothing consumer, so i don't doubt that it could be a more expensive procedure because i really dont know anything about building pedals.
      Not saying the same settings on one effect would necessarily sound good on another effect switching, but i was assuming, perhaps wrongly, that it would be a simple addition and at least negate the need to bend over for one of the functions.
