Elvis' manager told him not to perform this song because it's too controversial. Elvis told him the only way he won't perform it is over his dead body. After this performance Elvis said he would never again record a song he didn't believe in. LONG LIVE THE KING.

Elvis only performed this song twice. This was the first time on a live TV Christmas special and the best version. It was mainly dedicated to MLK but also in 68 Bobby Kennedy was also sick assassinated and his thoughts were with him as well.

Absolutely right. I'm so glad you re-uploaded this because it's one of the best reactions to If I Can Dream on this site. Every word you want to say is written on your face as Elvis sings. It's obvious that this song is really speaking to you. I must say, I really like the "copyright" insertions - they feel less intrusive than the pauses you guys have to do to avoid UA-cam problems so thanks for doing that.
You were spot on about the tribute to Dr King origins - this is from his 1968 Comeback Special, as you noted, Elvis sang it with so much conviction and passion. He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this) and was devastated to hear of his murder. Such a shame that a song with a message first heard in 1968 remains too relevant today.
Sadly, If I Can Dream was a once in a lifetime song and performance from Elvis. He never performed it live again - a real shame because although he didn't sing many socially conscious songs, the few that he did still speak to the mess that the world is in today.
I'm also a big rap fan but I love all kinds of music. I hope you continue to enjoy checking out Elvis because during his 1954-1977 career, he sang just about every genre of music: from country to rock n roll, gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, soul and even funk. I really adore your heartfelt and deep reaction because I know you had your doubts about Elvis in the beginning. Take care.

Elvis was more than a handsome man, great singer and performer. He was a kind, polite and generous man. He wanted everyone to get along with everyone. We are all sisters and brothers. This performance was very emotional and meaningful for him. Glad you appreciated it.
Imagine how effective Elvis could be today if he had lived. All the music. And his voice/message. Always non political. This was his personal tribute to MLK, who was assassinated in Elvis' hometown. Elvis was devastated and he insisted he sing this song to end his TV show as a tribute to MLK and the Kennedies also gunned down. Maybe the greatest performance of all time for a message song of this nature. Singer speaking to the people. Trying to heal a nation. Going against the grain. In a decade when assassinations were taking all the people's heroes down. THAT was BRAVE af. And the network wanted NOTHING to do with it and insisted Elvis NOT perform it on their airwaves. Elvis won that argument and thank God he did. He was one of a kind and the biggest proponent of peace and harmony in the music world that probably ever existed.

This song makes me very emotional. I tear up every time because I wish life could be as Elvis painted it with such passion in this song. Thank you for reacting to it. I could see how it touched you too. This should be the National Anthem...and not the crap about bombs bursting in air. Sincere reaction to an extremely sad but real song 👏 And how sad is it that this song is still relatable to this day? Elvis grew up in poverty, his father was in prison for 6 years so he and his mother lived in a shack - dirt poor - they depended on others for food. He grew up playing with all different races but mainly in the black community - he loved to go to the local church and sing gospel with the choir. Elvis himself was part Native American - he didn't see colour, he saw people. A true Gentleman who never forgot his roots. A rare, unique & truly special talent.

This is his tribute to his good friend MLK. King's assassination touched Elvis deeply. They wanted him to do a Christmas song, but Elvis insisted on doing this one. When it was over, he went to his room and, in the fetal position, wept inconsolably. The other message song he sang was In The Ghetto.. He didn't write it, bit he grew up in a mixed impoverished section of town. Both songs are still very relevant some 50 years later. I pray for the day they become irrelevant.

I grew up watching and listening to Elvis and I learned right away that he was a man for ALL people, no matter our color. Truly a heartfelt and beautiful reaction, I'm so glad that you watched it. It was, I think his most iconic performance, the emotions and feelings that came out in that song, we're almost visceral, it was a God gifted performance and he meant every word... he wanted it to have an impact and he wanted to speak from his heart.
There was a whole lot going on in our country at this time in 1968. Civil Rights protests, anti Vietnam war protests, getting the daily "Body Count" each night during the news, and then two months before this special was recorded Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated not far from Elvis' home in Memphis, TN and then Robert F Kennedy was assassinated in a Hotel in California just two weeks before this special was recorded. It felt like we were tearing apart as a country! This song was directly inspired by Dr. Kings "I Have A Dream" speech that he delivered in Washington DC in 1963 and was written at Elvis' request specifically to close this special.

Elvis was raised in & accepted by the black church near his home & was a part of the church choir.
His favorite music was gospel & his only grammy awards were for his gospel recordings.. he was famous for hours before or after his concerts for just going to the piano & singing song after song in praise.
Pure talent.. no auto tune or special effects.. that's why Elvis is a legend (he didn't like to be called King).
I was a very young child when dr. King got assassinated and I can get guarantee you there were a lot of tears in my house. In fact my allergies are acting up right now. Thanks for covering this and yeah when Elvis first got the news about the assassination, he was filming a movie and they had to shut down the production for a day because he went into a back room and curled up in a little ball and cried for hours.

There have been and still are many Elvis impersonators.... some with amazing voices, but I've yet to see any of them really match Elvis. And we're talking from the millions and millions of people inspired by him. The man had a powerful and great voice.

Elvis was not only an entertainer he was an entertainer for everyone no matter the skin color. He grew up as a lot of us southern white boys did and never understood the problems until the adults taught us different and that really includes all races. We still have a way to go but we're slowly getting there. One things for sure we can all agree on great soulful singers which i grew up listening too. Sam Cooke...Percy Sledge were 2 of my favs along with Elvis and I still listen to their music. I'll be happy when both races stop color coding their friends and just include everyone as their friends. Thats when we'll all be able to turn the corner. Turn the damn tv off and listen to Elvis he's a lot better than cnn or fox has ever had to offer us all.

There's a lot of favorite songs: from his rock'n'roll days the Mean Woman Blues video is great, from his soulful album, From Elvis in Memphis, the song Only the Strong Survive is outstanding, and from Vegas 70, Polk Salad Annie is a lot of fun.

The racist rumor started in 1958 by a reporter who interviewed Elvis in 1958 at a venue where Elvis never played. When Elvis was confronted about the rumor his reaction was anyone who knows me know I would never make a derogatory statement about the black community. Elvis lived and breathed black culture growing up. Yet the the rumor persists at a time when Elvis wasn’t around to defend himself. If anyone has any doubt please check a video called “Elvis and the black community”

Some people who were mad because they couldn't control him started a rumor that he was racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was raised in poverty in the deep South in Mississippi, his mother worked as a domestic and his father as a tenant farmer. He attended black churches and hung out with black friends. There is a video out there something like "Elvis and the Black Community" where all of his friends from way back tell about their friendship with him.

OK hi God bless you. I am from New Jersey my five Elvis favorite songs are can’t help falling in love with you from the 68 comeback special in the black leather suit. Second favorite would be my boy third and I love you so forth an American trilogy and if I can dream. I really appreciate your learning about Elvis but I would highly suggest that you watch Elvis and the black community. It’s about 10 minutes long the first part and then there. Is a part two. I loved your genuine reaction to this because Elvis put every ounce of heart and soul into this. I remember when I saw it when I was 10 years old. I’ve loved Elvis since I’m five he’s my all-time American hero because he represented, but I believed in and if you watch Elvis and the black community, you’ll learn that.
