I worked in two of his touring productions "Happy Times & Mr Pastry Come to Town" in the 50s as a dancer and one of his stooges it was great fun, a very happy time going around the country entertaining.
Richard Hearne was my grandfather's cousin and when I was quite young, about 6 or 7 I think, I met Mr Pastry for the first time when he was appearing in Peterborough where I grew up. He called on my grandfather and it was quite a family occasion and I even had a ride with him in his car. Now the best part of 60 years on it's one of those great memories I have of my childhood. I remember boasting at school that I was related to Mr Pastry.... I doubt anyone believed me at the time...
Apparently, he performed this at the Royal Variety Command Performance, and the following morning, the King's valet (George VI) found HM doing the dance in his dressing room! Richard Hearne was a tremendous entertainer - very gentle but still very funny
This takes me back in two ways. Mr Pastry was always a favourite on television when I was a child. It also reminds me of dance lessons at school, we were taught all of the dances that it was felt would be useful socially. I was the only boy who actually enjoyed dancing, so I was very popular with the girls. Unfortunately, by the time I was able to put my skills to use, this sort of dancing was out of favour.
What a lovely video, thank you so much for posting. Lovely of Richard Hearne as his wonderful Mr. Pastry. saw this when it was broadcast on the re-run of 'The Good Old Days'. till then hadn't realised Richard Hearne was on colour TV. Read up on him etc after. I am a young fan of Mr.Pastry, as I am of old time music hall. Can't tell you how much I love Mr.Pastry, Old Mother Riley (Arthur Lucan), Marie Lloyd, 'Over the Garden Wall's' Fanny Fairbottom & and the less than cheerful Auntie Doleful (Norman Evans), Hinge & Bracket etc etc. Friends say i've been reincarnated, because i know the old songs so well and the old stars. Made me nearly cry when the audience shouted "more!" ,"more!".
We need more mr pastrys today don't we? Oh wait, don't we already have one in John Bolton. If only he would wiggle his moustache he would be the spitting image.
Brilliant ! Somewhere, and i've seen it but can't find it again, there is a clip of Mr Pastry and Terry Thomas and it would be the 1950's possibly on the TT show " How Do You View ". Mr P complains about the stage lights, TT tells him he's a bit of a shower and calls for the the electrician in broad cockney "CHARLIE !!!" Dear Mr Taylor do you know this one and could you locate it ? Thanks so much, and for posting this.
I produced a Music Hall some years ago and tried to find the 'dots' . I spoke to the Music Hall Society (?) can't remember proper title, and the view of the guy I spoke to was that RH wrote it himself. I saw him perform The Lancers at The London Palladium, on Sunday Night at the London Palladium back in the day. It was absolutely magical. He filled that vast stage with a host of imaginary dancers, what a brilliant entertainer.
Billy Dainty does a brilliant homage to Richard Hearne"s performance. I wish I could go back to music hall, just once.

Justifiably, a most famous routine. Charming stuff. God Bless Mr Pastry
Mr.Pastry and Professor Stanley Unwin ,innocent fun ,happy days 😀
Yes, they very were, fond memories of TV in the 50’s.👍🏻
Whenever I leave a bus holding on to the rails, hand over hand, I think of Mr Pastry.

I met Mr Pastry in the early seventies and still have his autograph.
When you think of the time ,effort , that was put into this routine,it’s absolutely brilliant,,👍
I remember Mr Pastry when I was a kid. I must be even older than I thought...😂😂😂

Absolutely top drawer entertainer back in the day when variety meant something for everyone.

Thank you. Ive just posted a Fanny Fairbottom video from 'Over the Garden Wall'. Great humour!
Bless him. From a more innocent time.
An entertaining, clever, fun routine.
Oh , the good old and decent days .
We need more mr pastrys today don't we? Oh wait, don't we already have one in John Bolton. If only he would wiggle his moustache he would be the spitting image.
Now imagine him as the third Doctor Who, cause he was seriously considered.
He looks like John Bolton, but Mr Pasty is far funnier. I used to watch This show when I was little, great memories of good times
And far less dangerous!!!!!
Genius!

Billy Dainty also did a great version of this dance.
❤
Pip, pip. Cheerio, and all that sort of rot.
Funny way to make a living.
Rosemary Lach says she is unauthorized to join. can anyone fix this????

Does anyone have any idea of the name of the tune used in this performance from the Good Old Days

Somewhere I have a video of Billy Dainty doing this as a tribute to RH at a Royal Variety Performance...he is brilliant.
Did people actually pay to see this stuff?
