agreed. the show set up so much intrigue and mystery and kind of shot itself in the foot by resolving the beast's story too quickly thus sucking the power out of the show's villains. then it just turned into a classic case of "flavor of the month" story arc-driven narratives

@@frome5000 They got rid of his character WAYYY too soon. And it was at a time when he was being helpful...It's actually weird. They should have at least had him be problematic for a few episodes after helping Julia and THEN getting rid of him. But since they did it so soon it didn't come off as intended.

I feel like the end of this season had the same energy, specifically when all hell broke lose, but then it never recreated the tension.

The new viewer assumes Dean Fogg is probably a Dumbledore level badass, so the moment he bursts in to the room, the viewer thinks that everything is going to be fine and that the day is saved!
When The Beast casually freezes him on the spot, breaks every bone in Fogg’s hands with a few simple hand movements, and then proceeds to pull out his eyes, we realise that we are dealing with a seriously powerful and dangerous entity.

I never even noticed that Quentin dropped the coin on purpose to help Fogg. I always thought that it slipped out by accident, but he was actually doing magic!

The show was great for the most part of first season while they were following the book's story arc. Then it went downhill for me. Starting from the point when they introduced Amber (or Umber? Can't recall, it's been years...) and it started to turn into a joke.

I couldn't take this show seriously. It's a good premise but the execution is so off. The weird magic system, the boring characters, weird writing... none of it was pulled off in a good way.

I would recommend reading the book. From the clips I've seen of the show, the writers took the basic premise and plot points of the story and went their own way with it. In this scene, The Beast appears because Quentin was mad at the professor and, as an act of revenge, tried to make him mess up a spell he was writing on the blackboard to embarrass him. The Beast appears as a result and, like in the show, everyone is frozen in place, only able to move their eyes. The Beast walks around the lecture hall nonchalantly for hours, all the while teachers and faculty try and save the students from the outside because, unlike the scene in the show, The Beast has put up a powerful spell to keep anyone out. His appearance is also different, in the book his face is obscured by a small tree branch suspended in front of his face, the reason it being that specific branch is a small but interesting detail later, I get why they went with the moths though, just a branch would be lame I guess. This scene also sets up an internal conflict for Quentin, because one of his classmates somehow breaks out of the freeze spell and starts casting a powerful spell to kill The Beast. She is then eaten alive by The Beast, causing Quentin to feel guilt and remorse because he is the reason The Beast appeared. The Beast also never acknowledges Quentin, unlike in the show, nor does he attack anyone else. Also the overall pacing is pretty slow, taking 2 and a half seasons to get to something that happened two thirds into the first book. The books were, personally, a quick read. They're each about 400-450 pages long and the boxset is a little over 20 bucks on amazon. The only demerit I have is that some of the language hasn't aged well, the first book being published in 2009.

@@chrisberka157 truth be told I just can't take it seriously because of the silly spell casting. The way the actors move their hands like they're playing a weird game of charades is so dumb.

@cal_oh3663 From the clips I've seen, I completely agree. I think they dramatized that for the show. It's a lot different in the books.

I think the show was trying to be too many things at once. not to say you can't mix genres or vibes but they were all over the place...PLUS too many storyarcs running that they didn't spend enough time dealing with properly. All characters were individually interestingly designed and the actors did a great job with each but the storylines were all over the place. Makes me understand why it's not a show that was more talked about or hyped. The Beast was interesting and then hey just abruptly did away with his storyline like a change in direction behind the scenes it was strange.
