Great video, Mr. Davidson. Really nice jigs. I see others making jigs, and sometimes the edges are off by just a little bit. It appears the most successful jigs are the ones where the wood of the jig acts as a sort of "bridge" between the two boards to be attached: board A and board B. I first saw this demonstrated by a man here on You Tube who made a very crude but extremely accurate jig, and he explained why the holes didn't have to be exactly the same distance from the center, as long as you thought of the jig as a sort of bridge between the two pieces of wood. I think your jig takes the concept to a whole new level. Thanks.
+Earl Davidson Woodworking Your welcome. I just viewed your circular saw jig and I think I will give that a try too. Like you I can't see spending all that money for a commercial jig that I may only use once in a while.
I like this jig a lot. It is a lot less expensive that the centering store bought one and more versatile than the one I have. Thanks for posting the build.
Earl, i have become a viewer of your videos they are common sense like. I really like the "steel spacers" that you used from Lowe's - Great idea. I also learn that oak is great to tap into.. I never realized that. The two jigs are going to be made on the next project that I will be using dowels on. Keep the great videos coming, I enjoy them
Very helpful as I'm about to make ten custom wooden screen frames for replacement of my metal ones that keep stretching and coming loose. The Dowel Jig is a great idea and will keep me from messing up my wood corners...thanks again....RJ.
Thank you for posting this video it has like your other video been a great help as I am new to wood working and have learned a great deal from them. Keep up the great work.
Simple is sweet ! The use of the bushings prolongs the jigs life's usefulness and acuraticee . Try making jig#1 with a parrellagram support bars ,then it is self-centering . A dowel hole set at left and right , 1/2"and 1" from jig's ends will serve 2uses : the 1/2" , for an end set spacer , the 1" : serves as a 1" spacer also and as a even spacer for longer doweling runs . 😃Aloha Earl from Oahu, Mark
Great Ideas, Mark. On my projects, so far, I've only been concerned with referencing the dowel holes from top surfaces. I'll make a jig like you describe if I need to have dowels centered. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Dear Earl, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, tips and experiences. Now, I know what is going back to the shop in mint condition. Love your gadgets and your lovely workshop; unfortunately UK market does not hold your type of gadgets. Best of luck
Hi Earl. Greatings from Brazil. It looks u r popular here!!! And by the way, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! God bless you, Keep on the nice work !!!! Big hug. /////////// Ola Earl. Saudações do Brasil. Parece que você é popular aqui !!! E a proposito, obrigado por compartilhar seu conhecimento conosco! Que Deus te abencoe, Continue com o bom trabalho !!!! Grande abraço!
You beat me to the punch. I am in the middle of making a jig strictly for 3/4 inch boards, similar to what you made but with only three holes. I was very frustrated with the self centering type of jig you used in the first video. I couldn't get consistently aligned holes. I ordered the hardened steel bushings from McMasters/Carr and you're right, they are 3X more expensive than the ones in Lowes.
Em alguns vídeos, esta é a opção para traduzir, não é uma tradução detalhada, mas funciona para entender algumas coisas em particular, saudações do México.
By making a narrower jig could it be possible to make one for 1" boards using 1/4" dowels following along the same method you used for the 2 by # lumber and the 4x4 lumber
+Douglas Smith Absolutely! I plan to make one for 1x4's (.75x3.5 actually) if I ever get through with this table and bench. Between making jigs and doing videos my progress on the bench itself has been slow. And I haven't even started on the table. :)
Hello I see that your templates are interesting and I see in the video that you have plans So why not have put the links so that we can download them thanks in advance
Thanks for watching! English translation by Google: "Congratulations on the job from Spain. I would like to know where I can get steel or metal spacers to make a template here in Spain or online. Thanks and best regards" Amazon.com has them: www.amazon.com/Hillman-Group-59655-Seamless-10-Pack/dp/B00NQR0TXW/ref=pd_sbs_60_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=X2ABV8H77RAH85103FF9
Just for interest sake, what does that yellow pine cost where you live? For example it's about 20$ here for one 8' 2x4 and it's gonna have at least one knot in it. A standard framing 2x4 here is around 2$, and they are so riddled with knots and twists you cant use it for much.
Aedam, I'm purchasing 2x12's 12 feet long for $14 from a locally owned retail lumber yard in southwest Georgia. I think I've purchased about 20 in the last year. One was super straight grain with one knot. All others had a few knots that I could work around. One warped so badly when I ripped it that I ended up using it in very short pieces. When I look at what's available at the local blue and orange stores there's no comparison.
Thanks for the comparison. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. Nothing but trees here, but they still charge an arm and a leg for lumber apparently. Pine costs as much as some hardwoods per board foot, blows my mind. The local mills stopped selling retail last year. A clear 12 foot 2x12 in pine prices out at 156$. No joke.
Hello friend woodworker. My name is ronaldo am Brazil I am furniture designer and have a small carpentry. Very nice Earl, looks like a handy jig to have around without spending a lot of money for a commercial one.
+Bill Kingman Thanks Bill. I just balked at spending $100-$300 for a commercial jig.

Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge. I told my son just now that you are my new grandpa. 😊
“Hi.........I’m Earl”. Ok, you know it’s going to be good info when someone starts off with that much matter-of-fastness!
I like this jig a lot. It is a lot less expensive that the centering store bought one and more versatile than the one I have. Thanks for posting the build.
+Jean-Marc Labonte Thanks Jean-Marc. And they're so easy to build!

Thank you for the very informative video. The offset on one corner is great, especially after mis-assembling a recent project.
Yep, I've done that. That's what made me think of the offset. Thanks for watching!

Very nice. Elegant creations.
Very good video, I like the steel inserts, thanks
Great job Earl. Looks just as accurate as the $250.00 ones I've seen. Thanks for this video.
+Frederick Ippolito ... thanks Fredrick. While I havent used one of the $250.00 tools, I've had NO alignment errors with any of these three jigs.
Congratulations and thanks from a brasilian man! I don't speak english well, but I understood only watching. Great video!
Thanks for watching!

Hi Earl. Thanks a lot. i just have a project where i think i am going to use the 2nd kind of jig you showed. Does it works with miter joints?
Attila, I have not used dowels on miter joints...yet. I think it should work just fine. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much. This is really useful!
Nice Earl!
+George Schwab Thanks George.
Great video but can't find steel spacers in the UK...cheapest I've found so far is £3 each..
Nice work sir.
