Join McShovels and co. as we journey along with him facing his biggest demons. The trouble with building big steep jumps is that you eventually have to hit them... From building to testing, the rollercoaster of emotions that one experiences is like none other in the beautiful world of bmx trails.
The second section takes us deep into rural Canada, The Saskatchewan prairies, and captures a post jam session at Cedar trails.
This short film was created over the course of the year and entirely made my me and my friends - I couldn't quite find the music selection I wanted online so I ended up making my own. Let me know if you enjoyed it (Its a big ollllll rabbit hole!)
Substrata is narrative driven, bicycle short films and stories covering the amazing world of bmx trails.

There is something about your videos that I really like to watch. Not chasing any trends, no dopamine receptors were fried, just pure art. I enjoy it even more cuz I was thinking about making cinematic biking channel for like a year now and I started doing it not long ago so your channel is something that I can kind of really relate to. Also love that you made music by yourself, I was trying too back in the day and now I make something for myself from time to time. Keep up the great work brother! 😄🫶
Thankyou so much Szymon, you hit the nail on the head. I try to create what I enjoy watching, a good bit of story telling, shredding and cinema sprinkled in. I subbed to you a while back, enjoy the direction you are heading in! Making music is sick, I'm stoked to make more and develop it along with the video skillsss
Gotta love a McShovels segment. Another banger, dude!!
Hes got main character energy
So awesome
Thankyou my dude
This footage makes the trails in Saskatchewan look way more expansive then I had previously thought.
Always love to see trail development on your home lines!
There’s over 100 piles of dirt there . Most developed bmx spot in Canada that I know of at the moment. 4 lines with extra option lines. Beginner jumps to big jumps. Tech. Gnar. Whatever you want cedars got. Unless you want a big gay mellow mtb table top. We don’t got that. Or a hill… 🤣
Yeah man! theres a lot of stuff there, Seth needs a bigger rollin haha
Aside from driveway curbs, my first jump spot was in the maintenance yard at the local park. The city tree crews would dump the chipped up trees in long rows roughly three feet high, six feet wide and as long as the truck would hold. Us kids would just bring a small rectangle of plywood to prop up on one end to act as a lip in the soft chips. Just sprint in and blast off. And wiggle the bike around in the air trying to whip. I remember trying to learn tables like we saw in the BMX magazines. I'd just hit the lip, rotate to flat and land on the pile, with no clue that I was supposed to somehow bring it back and land on my wheels.
Sounds like you had a great time! Those "impromptu plywood" spots are always the best haha. I still struggle with tabes today, something I really want to perfect. Im goofy footed so one foot tabes are no worries but the elusive snap of a regular tabe ala inman, read, slattery... Not there yet!
@@substrata4130 I'm goofy too. it means nothing. You just table the other way! And really, we all have our favorite way, but when it comes down to it, we should all be able to table in both directions. One might build one's own trails to favor our favorite, but we hopefully all travel to other peoples trails and they may just not go your way. I'm 6'7", so perhaps my long legs give me an upper hand at this. But struggle on my friend and find that two way snap! Thinking back on it (I don't ride any more due to MS.) I can't even remember which way is my "Natural." direction.
"Live on Instagram" haha that part cracked me up. Nice video Boyd, killin it this year
Haha he comes out with some great stuff, legend. Thanks dude!

watching your videos, allways give me that flash back 24 years ago, when i was building trails over here in germany. that escapism from struggle. lowering the constant noise in my head, resulting in a bit of peace in that very moment! big hugs... and where is the moose?^^
Thanks man! Being out there in the woods, playing in the dirt has such healing qualities, even if the work itself is physically demanding. Our furry friend hasnbt been seen for a few weeks now, must of migrated back towards the foothills. :)
What camera was used to film this masterpiece?
Thanks!! It was a combo of Canon C70 + R6 mk 2 🎬🤝
