    Shelly Yakus is without a doubt one of the greatest living Engineers. Shelly will be doing a Google Hangout with me on Mon 22nd at 10am PST. Please sign up the email list at www.producelikeapro.com for details of how to get online to discuss recording techniques with Shelly. I look forward to seeing you there! Fantastic interview, thank you very much!
    Now imagine for a second if "Romeo and Juliet" had been produced with today's "industry standard" production techniques: Recorded to a click, the drums quantized and replaced, Mark's voice auto-tuned, 100 more unnecessary tracks added just because we can, and finally the whole mix squashed to death to get to a DR of 6-8. How much of the song's magic would be left? Better not to think about it, haha.
    Many thanks, David

    I always like discussions with older guys like Shelly, they bring so much priceless tidbits to younger people. I'm always amazed that they give information, tricks and philosophy like candies. That's absolutely invaluable to the entire home-recording community. Thanks again Warren! Great interview!

    This man's discography has provided me with a huge number of reference tracks, and although many of them are a few decades old now, they still seem unbeatable to me. I love that you talked about going back to the roots as well and I would agree (the blues is my first musical thrill). Absolutely fantastic stories being told in this video, and invaluable knowledge. Very important thing he talked about: 'the zone' that musicians, and in particular, vocalists travel to ..that's essential for producing enough power to reel us all in to theater of the mind. There needs to be more of this in today's music, in my opinion..
    Great episode with one of the greats, thanks once again...

      +Produce Like A Pro Yes indeed - I pretty much know those songs like the back of my hand - I wore out my old LPs listening to those licks... @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      Hi +Daniel Brecher Thanks for the message! You have had success with emailing info that there isn't a way to corroborate? It's my understanding from many artists that unless there is a physical copy that has the information on then Rovi (who do Allmusic's credits) won't put them up. Here's the page for submissions on Allmusic:- www.allmusic.com/product-submissions If you have an inside track and can clarify how to do it and show us all the process that would be amazing!! so cool. Im gonna try that mastering site. I was just told by a local studio guy that my mixes will sound better after he masters them with his EQ and compressors. He said when I put good headphones on Ill hear more separation and detail. But I hear enough separation and detail when I put my expensive headphones on. Who needs such sharp clarity? What am I listening for anyway? just curious

  • @SuperSongSpecial
    @SuperSongSpecial 8 років тому +1

    I must admit, I was sceptical about 'online mastering' - but after this video & spending an hour researching the AfterMaster website, it couldn't have a more credible team behind it! I wonder if anyone's tried summing a mix through the TV box?! Could go RCA out from interface to TV Box, then stereo-splitter back in to 2 channels. Little mastering box!
    When the Adobe Auditon add-on comes out, I'm definitely going to give it a try.
    I tried to buy some shares too, but it doesn't seem to be open market. If the chip ends up in a top brand TV
    manufacturer then it's going to be (figuratively) huge.

    • @Producelikeapro

    • @Producelikeapro

      Hi +Steve Martin Great question, I wonder if it was Furman PQ-3 Parametric Equalizer/Preamp, that was very popular in the late 70's and early 80's! I think it must have been this model! Ill show Shelly a photo of it the next time I see him, but my gut is this is right because of the EQ options! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    • @martinthejerk
      @martinthejerk 8 років тому

      +Produce Like A Pro -- thanks, Warren! That's what I was thinking... Found one on eBay listed at "Dimebag Darrel guitar preamp" hahaha... Crazy that two such totally different guitarists would both use it, but makes sense when thinking about how Shelly describes how it accentuated Knopfler's percussive fingerpicking... I'd imagine Dimebag utilized it to emphasize the percussive nature of his chunkier heavy sounds... Very cool! (And not all that expensive of a piece of gear!)

    Are we STILL doing the whole "loudness wars" thing? Seriously? :/

      Hi +KhronX Apparently so! The biggest problem I see is the inability of most people to hear mixes without it, so annoying! I've taken my mix and slammed it harder and sent it back to the Artist and/or label and they've told me it's a better mix! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren.

      I swear, it's stuff like this that makes me feel like the whole world is dumbing down, seriously... How effin' difficult it is to, i don't know, reach for the volume? Or have we reached quite SUCH a level of commodity, that even that's too much (hard) work? :P
      Granted, i can see the argument that more dynamic mixes do sound "quieter" at the same volume setting, but... Gosh, that sounds to me like a "quantity vs. quality" thing (ie. loud vs. dynamic, respectively).

      Hi +KhronX You're preaching to the choir!! Listen to Shelly amazing albums he made and imagine if they were all limited to death! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren.

      Well, unless i horribly misunderstood something, it sounded a lot like he was preaching IN FAVOUR of really loud mixes :) At least to catch the ear of labels and whatnot...

      Hi, +KhronX Interesting take, ultimately he is talking about a system he invented called 'Aftermaster' it's get the volume to be competitive with the other generic 'slam the heck out of it' masters but without destroying the mix. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren.
