This is what you get when you have well read intelligent minds with historical perspective and knowledge of today’s trends writing the script. There is just so much depth. You can watch the show multiple times and not find everything. I love it.

Agreed! That’s one high bar they’ve set for modern entertainment, and I hope there’s more than a few aspiring storytellers in Succession’s audience who feel up to the challenge. Thanks for the comment, Irene!

This is a phenomenal examination of one of the most interesting aspects of Succession's unique speech patterns. Glad youtube randomly reccomended this video, always looking for other video essayists.

My favorite example “You have ingested too much cocaine, trying to do what you thought was saving Kendall in order to please Logan Roy, giving you a false job. You underestimated the strength of the narcotics and now you are about to become overstimulated since you are probably new to this.”
    Summarized into: “BUCKLE UP FUCKLEHEAD!”

“Whoa, whoa. That’s a chunk of chang you got there, buddy.”

The Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon strikes again! I notice reframes now in other tv shows and films - though many instances of them are not so subtle as in Succession.
Thanks for checking out the video!

@@Scene-a-maticStorytelling Haha! Is your moniker a derivative of Spy Magazine's highly hilarious _____-O-Matic's flow chart 'splainers? Hollywood Script-O-Matic was my favorite. It made all those 90s movies LAMENESS so delicious 😋. Spy

Ha! That almost makes me sound half-clever! :)
I can’t say I was thinking of Spy Magazine specifically, but the name is definitely a nod to earlier cartoons and any of those imaginative [blank]-o-Matic inventions in popular media. The spawn of snark sounds like a good enough selling point for me to track down some old issues. Thanks, Angie!

I love the way your video walks us through this technique - you're a great teacher! As a professional writer (not screen), and general lover of language, to me the dialogue in Succession is champagne for the brain. I'm often hitting the 15-sec rewind arrow every few minutes when watching this show, just to re-listen and savour the delicious cleverness of a line. Can't help myself! The writers are disciplined virtuosos, but are also riffing playful and complex jazz solos (sometimes taking them to a limit that's borderline insane!). I recommend people in the comments watch The Thick Of It, one of Jesse Armstrong's older creations, the dialogue is also this sharp and wicked. It's British-centric, but will keep you going until we get Season 4! :)

I was nervous putting in even a fraction of the song might get the video copyright struck, so originally I made a (very poor) cover in GarageBand, but luckily in the last moments of editing, I got permission to use that awesome Lo-Fi cover, and no one had to hear my sub-par version :)

This is a wildly different example but throughout the video all I could think of was the line,
"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons"
where the initial phrase is reframed twice in ways that don't add anything, then one more time, much more dramatically, for comedic effect.

    • @Scene-a-maticStorytelling
      @Scene-a-maticStorytelling  Рік тому

      That’s a wildly great example!
There’s some rapid fire ones in the previous lines too. All to reframe unrealistic ways how the town might welcome Bart:
“What did you expect? Welcome, sonny? Make yourself at home? Marry my daughter?”
Good, serviceable writing that communicates more than the sum of its words, but the end bit you point out is what it’s all leading to: the line TURN to the punchline. All the reframes are the stepping stones that lead us to that rhetorical twist.
Thanks for sharing! Hadn’t watched that scene in some time.
