Hi Luis It's Horse bedding woodchips on the bottom of the cages,But I've started using Pine ( softwood ) cat litter in the breeders from last month. Its a lot better and easier to clean,I just pour the cage draws into a garden sive and the soiled cat litter just crumbles and your left with just reusable clean cat litter. I get my cage fronts from an English company called Wades. Cheers.
Hello Mark, Great bird room! What's on the bottom of the cages, wood chips? What's the benefit over, say, newspaper? Also, where do i get the cage fronts? Thanks a lot for the awesome videos. Very inspiring for some of us. Luis
Hi Luis, The water has Avigold Advance by A company called Aviform,it's a multi vitamin tonic that's used everyday. Also I use my own mixture of grits,I use Oystershell ,Charcoal, and dried crushed kelp ( seaweed ) with cuttlefish powder and iodean powder.
You can safely use it everyday, but I use it everyother day all year around. All Aviform products can be mixed together ,so I add wormer Aviform Expel once a month to the mix.its all natural ingredients like Tansey and garlic ect.
Anthony Cruise I use Smite spray for cleaning and I use Diatomaceous dust in the bottom of the nest boxes and a quick mite spray in the half finished nest. I also use Ivermectin spot on 0.1% . All these can be found on eBay. Some breeders use garlic essents in the drinking water, but I've not used this method. Also you will get mites from time to time ,so be proactive and look for them around your birdroom setup.
Not sure if you still are on youtube, but i recently picked up a pair of society finches in hopes of breeding them. They have a large cage, and have been in there a week or so, but still they refuse to enter the nest i provided. Does this mean they aren't a breeding pair, or do they just need time?
blayne coombes , I built them myself, I bought the cage fronts front a company called wades cage fronts. If you live in the uk then bird keeping is a massive hobby and you can buy this equipment in most cities.
Hi Rico, which species are you referring too.? Their are differences in every specie to look for when trying to sex birds into pairs ,But No: 1 sign is all cock birds sing.
Hi Carimlan Are your Zebra finches pets or are you a novice breeder.? There are many reasons why your Zebras are not feeding their chicks,From too much interference, incorrect food, mites,in bred young, mice IE night fright, and your parent birds being either too young or too old. If both parents are not feeding their chicks ,then check the above first ,or split the pair up with another pair and see who is the bad parent and remove that bird from your breeding stock. Try adding Avigold Advance multivitamin tonic too their drinking water on a daily basis, their might be something missing from their diet.? Also buy a good quality egg food and feed it daily before and during the breeding cycle. I hope this helps
sir mark thanks for the reply. i am a novice breeder. actually i only have 1 pair of zebra finch right now. ur advice helped me a lot. i have another question, my pair of zebra finch dont make a nest but they mate i saw it. what is the problem? thanks in advance.. i will subscribe
+ejie jie Try building the nest for them, I always half build my birds nest ,then I just give them a little amount of coconut fibre and a dozen fine feathers to finish it off the way they want it. Dont give zebra finches too much nesting material because they will keep building .Even onto of eggs and even chicks they already have. Also if the nest is too close to the entrance hole chicks and eggs can be pulled out by one of the parents. Bilding a nest: use red mite powder mixed with sawdust on the bottom of the nest box. make a ring with coconut fibre and place in the nest box. fill centre of the coconut fibre ring with fine nesting material ie animal hair. finish buy placing feathers ( from a feather pillow ) onto the soft nesting material. use your fist to make a cup shape for your nest. add a very small amount of feathers and coconut fibre for your birds to finish and make ready for egg laying. This is my technique for nest building,Your can get mite powder and nesting material from your pet shop. Duck down Pillows from a haberdashery. Hope this helps.
Anthony Cruise I bought them off a breeder friend a few years back , I think he got them from a pet shop that closed down?. But look on Rob Harvey's website he's a UK bird breeder equipment supplier ,he has new large plastic stock cages for sale.He might even have metal ones too?
Sean, If you can collect in person, then I have a few 2016 ringed youngsters from proven Foster parents. My Society finches ( Bengalese ) are only used to rear other finches ,Waxbills and manikins, I bred over 100 Star finches which are famously unrearlible parents last year using Bengalese.
