Chess also throws all your bad habits back in your face. Everyone knows that bad sleep, junk food and not exercise aren't good for your health in general, but we underestimate the impacts in the cognitive ability.

It's great to see an actual healthy approach to chess. I'm 2000 USCF and only recently realized chess is supposed to be fun :/

There are elements of luck if you count your opponent making a mistake as luck, especially when they miss something very obvious.

Per the video I get three main components for why Chess is good to your psychology (however I would think it's better said that it helps your Cognition):
1.- Rule's Consistentcy - Allows for experience to build up, making things easier until you reach your current limit.
2.- Trackable Progress - Allows for Gamification
3.- Cognitive Effort - Allows for the flow state to activate
What appears clear to me is that 3.- Cognitive Effort is most important as then that can be translated to other activities.
I wonder which other games could induce the flow state and ease the transition of this flow state to other aspects of your life (like poker if you count cards or Go) and if it's required to be a "game" (what about puzzles like Rubik's cube or sudoku)?

My dad introduced me to chess long ago, (I was six) it used to be about your own strategies or the ones you copy from oponents but now it's mostly about books. If you don't memorize them you're screwed and can't compete

Great points. Chess also highlights the idea of planning carefully before acting.

Well, there is luck in chess - whoever gets to go first has the advantage.

That advantage is negligible unless you play at a high level. Even at the top level it's a pretty small advantage.

It gets you one step closer to winning if you know what you're doing but also gives the opponent one more clue to figure out what you're doing.
But your opponent might be annoyed if you ruin his favorite opening which might give enough edge to win the match. :D
Some moves might be simply wasted if the other player doesn't bite but that advantage can also be kept by making the opponent react to your moves.
The first move really can invalidate some openings but to take advantage of that you got to study openings to such degree which i was honestly really lazy to do back when i was attending competitions.

Well, if luck is anything outside of your control, then your opponent's mistakes or brilliancies can also be considered luck.

Maybe I'll just do my work, rather than adding a hobby that you have said does not demonstrably improve any skills other than that of playing chess.
