    i am just trying to sort out my non starting xt600e. i have little sparks in batches of 3 about 2 seconds apart which don't do much for ignition! just found the CDI box under the seat hump. i have replaced the ignition coil to no effect. i have to check the pick up coil and generator. pleased you got yours going.

    ok so the lights went on today for a few minutes so its not my cdi in anyways thank god it was just a co-incidence my gasket moved outta place when my lights went of thats fine now so what powers all the lights if not the fuse battery or cdi?

    hey man, i got a question, when i check putting the negative onto the ignition coil and the positive into the plug doesn't read anything but the plug is new and the wire too, it could be the ignition coil?? and also mark 4.0 when i test the ignition coil i have to replace that?? thanks

    Help, i got no spark and got a new CDI box and no start, so, i got a new ignition coil and still won't start, any advice to solve this problem, my bike is a 50cc Scooter chinese 4 stroke 2009,thanks.

    Interesting timing on this vid, Max. I followed a guide to cut a wire to the CDI last weekend. The bastard box was retarding the timing of the ignition apparently to ensure the rev's don't pick up too quickly and fail a fly-by noise emissions test.
    The engine is so much smoother and it fixed the flat spots I was running into. 5k on the bike (GT250), 2nd owner and only now is it running like it should have from the beginning.
    Beware evil CDIs!

    If you suspect you cdi box, try heating it with a hair dryer until too hot to touch, then try to start your engine if it starts as it probably will your cdi unit has failed. A company called Carmo in the Netherlands can repair them.

    i have a motorcycle that uses 2 plugs per cylinder. it seems only 1 plug is firing, other one, not at all. my coil resistance is 14kohm, book says 18-20kohm is acceptable. do you think the coils is causing poor spark?

    No you can just test the resistance doesnt have to warm up or anything. If it is out of specs then replace it

  • @mrmaxstorey
    @mrmaxstorey  11 років тому +2

    Yes the battery will have an affect, depending on the design of the ignition system it may be able to be started without a battery, but more likely than not a battery is required in order to get a good spark

    Well done. When I was younger, I used to stick a screw driver in the spark plug cable while resting the shaft of the screw driver against the frame. The I'd cranks the inline and check for a spark.

    This one was full of resin too, some guys will meticulously melt it off on low heat to try to repair it if it goes south, but I didnt have the patience. Apparently the resin is a good idea for use on a bike that bounces up and down so much, but it does effectively make the CDI a replacement unit only

  • @mrmaxstorey
    @mrmaxstorey  11 років тому +2

    Its a wire that leads directly from the battery and has 12 volts to it, so when it touches the frame which is the ground, it shorts and causes heat. The solenoid may be to blame, or it may be a rogue wire like I described. Watch my video on wiring diagrams for more info.

  • @mrmaxstorey
    @mrmaxstorey  11 років тому +1

    What does the spark look like? Is it fat and blue, or yellow/orangish color?

  • @RJSoftware2000
    @RJSoftware2000 5 років тому

    Check coil by wiring copper wire to iron coil core then to one of leads thento positive, Touch other lead to ground and spark plug wire will spark to ground. Like the cdi/tci the spark happens when ground is disconnected.
    On cdi/tci check for safety controls. Side stand minus neutral on OR Kill switch on.
    Check the pickup. Broken wire (open circuit), pinched/shorted (rings true to ground).
    Check ohms across leads, some bikes have multiple pickups.(2 for two cylinders).
    Repair is possible.

    I had an xt550 summers of 1988 and 1989. Started stranding me everywhere…. I’d start pushing it towards work and let it cool down and then it would start again. Cost $300 bucks to fix which was more than a weeks pay. I only paid $675 for the bike in good condition. Sold it shortly after I got it back…..

    My bike went to an old garage. Mechanic said it had weak spark and blamed the cdi box. Could that be the correct diagnosis? Being that my bike is a 81 Suzuki GS1000G, where would I find a replacement that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, like over $200?

    Id first check out the intake and air/fuel mixture. Is the airbox and boots all stock, tight and no vacuum leaks? Carb jets are clear and the stock size, float level set appropriately, clean air filter, good gas? These little bikes are very sensitive to inconsistencies in the intake

    i have a 1980 yamaha sr250 that has no spark...i have checked the ignition coil, pick up coil, starter solenoid, and battery. they all check out fine. spark plug is new and the safety relay works. heres where things get funky...if i have the ignition on and i put the bike from stop to run and put a meter on my spark plug wire i have a constant 12v. if i leave the meter on the wire and switch it to stop i lose the 12v. my starter button doesnt work either but i think thats just worn contacts. also, will the bike get spark even if the neutral switch is bad? Thanks Matt

  • @mrmaxstorey

    just a quick question..i have a gsxr 750 sling...when it gets hot it doesn't fire on all cylinders is this a coil problem and if it is can i replace it with any coil or does it have to be same bike?

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 12 років тому

    I believe the timing is good as the problem comes on and off instantly. It could be the secondary, I don't know what that is, I was just told to make sure it was under 1ohm between the only 2 wires going into the coil.

    In my experience, CDI boxes will either completely fail suddenly, or just get gradually worse. What does your spark look like?

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 12 років тому

    It's not just at high revs, it's always, especially low revs. At least it has a slim chance of snapping full power for a second at wot and/or high throttle. What's the plug gap, I can regap. I cleaned the carbs before I looked at ignition including soaking the jets (all looked pretty clean).

    I have a roketa 50cc scooter that was running great until last night when I left it outside while it showered for 20 minutes. It was dirty so if figured it would be fine. After the rain I tried to start her and it started but the my tack was reading 10,000 rpm but the bike was idling at about 2 then it stopped running. I bought it with a racing cdi on it. I'm getting spark and gas but can't get it to run now. I'm thinking a cdi because of my tack being off.

    Hi Mr Max. two months ago I "shorted out" on a hot day and had to push my bike home. It's a 1991 Honda Nighthawk CB750. I removed the seat and saw that the wires from the harness that run under the seat were fried. I removed the harness and replaced it with another one from a twin bike I have for parts. No dice. I ordered a new harness only this one didn't have an extra solenoid. Today I tried to fix again and took out an alarm box that was connected to nothing (I checked it from stem to stern) and ended up removing a bunch of wires. However, from that wiring mess, two black wires were cut into the rear light wires (orange and blue) via two little blue plastic connectors that have little metal pieces in it to cut into the wire.
    However, when I turn the key, I don't get any lights or any sign of life. It's dead. I know I have an extra solenoid somewhere. I just ordered an ammeter and will check the solenoid, battery and starter, then will check the kill switch and ignition. \\Do you have any other ideas?

    I have a '82 CM450E. My bike was dogging below like 40% load, then it would come to life. Then the point at which it would "come to life" became higher and higher until it got to the point where it was always dogging. WOT gets me to like 45 unless it randomly decides to crack full power at WOT. Cleaned the carbs, no change. I realized it was running on one cylinder, but I have a (VERY VERY FAINT) spark on both plugs.
    .
    So......coil or CDI box? I don't like throwign $80 at something but...

    Hey Mr. Max, found the vid that u mentioned. On my 75' Honda I don't have but two test points one from the points and the other going to the plug. So I guess just go to ground on both of the wires and read the ohm? Then check the book. And I don't have a CDI box, maybe I should convert? Are they fairly reliable? I just need a spark. Could a rectifier cause any trouble starting? Thanks.

    • @Chubbza5
      @Chubbza5 6 років тому +4

      Yeah you have to hit it with a MAP torch just until it smokes again, then submerge it in a bucket of cold water to condense the smoke and it will trap the smoke back inside the box. A handful of 9v batteries in the water also helps.

    • @4TheRecord

      It's very simple to replace the smoke that you've lost, just set the CDI on fire and the smoke will return.

    Well, looks like you were right, paid $100 for a CDI box (brand new, the guy builds 'em and bench tests 'em, "CDIMagician" on ebay). Runs identical as before.
    .
    I've heard that the coil should have no more than 1 Ohm of resistance in it and mine has like .6 (and my multimeter was measured against a 1 Ohm resistor, so it's pretty accurate). All the stator checks I did checked out. Not quite sure where to turn now.

  • @theskiviking9007
    @theskiviking9007 2 роки тому

    Soon as I saw the gas tank I knew it was a CDI box! Most common failure/model. If the CDI is black and you have no spark, buy the new brown one for $500 and you have a reliable, working XT again.

    This could be a coil problem, or associated wiring. Its always best to replace with OEM parts, I dont know enough about GSXRs to tell you whether the 600 or 1100 or 1000 will mate up, or even the katanas, so go on ebay and try to find some 750 coils if you suspect they are the source of the problem

    I can try running a battery from my friend's bike temporarily to see. None of the wiring looks damaged, but that's obviously not a be all analysis. Hard to test it all. I'll check out what I can.

    will it be bad for the electrical components...(ignition)?

    I cant say for sure. You can test the coil using the method I showed. Its also likely that you have a loos wire somewhere

    mrmaxstorey Hi i am looking for a coil for my drz 125, and i cant find any. THere are many others for much cheaper but im not sure if it would work correctly since they are not made for the drz 125. Does it matter? Do you have to buy the exact same coil? thanks in advance!

    If you can find one. Pretty much all bikes use their own CDI's. What bike are you working on?

    So, I went out in the cold and did some investigation. Started double checking wiring connection and it seems there may be a problem in the kill switch wiring. Not sure why it only affected one cylinder....but yeah.

      That is unusual, try repairing it and see if it solves your problem.
