What people don't get about the second one, is that it's supposed to closely resemble the cartoon. We never see Claw's face, like in the cartoon, Gadget is allot more air-headed and goofy, like in the cartoon, and his gadgets fail almost every single time, like in the cartoon. I liked the second one allot, I just wish it had the sand actors as the first one.

Mathew Broderick's version of Gadget made Gadget out to be some whiny, emo, soft spoken, self esteem deprived loser. Gadget in the original 1983 cartoon was conceited, energetic and full of himself, and French Stuart nails that. However I feel this sequels BIGGEST problem is that it has a MAJOR identity crisis. It wants to learn from the mistakes made in 1999, but its still held back by being a sequel to the 1999 film, thus unfortunately having to share the same continuity. It also wants to be more like the original show, but it felt like the people making this sequel only wrote down notes, but couldn't be bothered to watch at least 5 episodes of the original show to figure out how these things worked. Yes Penny does do all the detective work, but Gadget is never aware of it, and Penny sure as hell wouldn't blurt out the fact that she's been doing the detective work. In fact I'm surprised Penny never got grounded at any point in this movie, especially when she straight up cuts school to join Gadget at a police station. Speaking of Penny, why do these movies continuously insist on Penny not having that tricked out computer book from the show? Like I said, all these people had to do was actually watch the show. Another thing that tried to get right but still failed at? Dr Claw. While Claw in this movie isn't as whiny and obnoxious as Rupert Everett, he's still just as lame. While yes we don't see his entire face this time, in the show we didn't see shit other then that badass metal hand of his. Also Claw had a hellish demon like voice that only Frank Welker could make sound badass. The claw in this movie is basically just Rupert Everett's claw, except we don't see his entire face. If they really wanted to get Claw right, they should've only had him seen from behind that chair, and all we see his his arm with that metal glove, and he should've had a demon like voice. Also in the 1999 film, Claw basically ran some sorta fancy high tech company, in this movie he runs an abandoned bowling factory, but in the original show? Claw straight up ran a TERRORIST organization!! Finally? The gadget mobile. In the show, the gadget mobile was a post/mail van that could turn into a "Back to the Future" style delorean. Why they voted instead to stick with the Barbie convertible with D.L.Hughley's soul trapped inside I have no idea. In a nutshell, this movie is like that kid who flunked hard on a test, and was given a chance to retake it, but instead of getting several useful sources and even watching videos to get better understanding of what's on the test, he/she just did a quick glance on Wikipedia, and flunked the test again.

The only thing i didnt get was why didnt they do this FIRST? Its closer to the cartoon, therefor its my fav of the sequels. Some scenes and characters werent needed and claw needed a better evil lair, but other than that it was cool

I know it would have made the whole Inspector Gadget/G2 romance awkward, but why not have Brenda make HERSELF into G2? THAT would have been a cool movie!

@clarikid I liked Broderick's Gadget. He wasn't stupid, just naive. Not to put down Don Adams classic portrayal, but the character was too stupid to believe. Broderick made Gadget more human, who still made mistakes, but could actually get things done without a lot of assistence from Penny. French Stewart embodied everything that put me off the original character.

Although the sequel was more closer to the animated series in terms of characterization, the script was so bad it was painful to sit through. And the cgi gadgets looked more like something out of a Dr. Seuss movie, not an Inspector Gadget movie. French Stewart was downright annoying. Against all the odds, I prefer the first film. It may lack a lot of the things the cartoon had, but at least it has a tolerable script and realistic looking gadgets.

It was a direct to DVD release I think. I was surprised I saw a DVD of an Inspector Gadget 2 with someone else cast as Inspector Gadget.
Chuck Russell who directed The Mask would be perfect to direct an Inspector Gadget movie i think.

The director wanted someone to play Inspector Gadget in a much more clumsy and incompetent way just like in the cartoon from 1983.

They changed every actor, INCLUDING THE FRICKIN GADGET MOBILE. It certainly was cool, but it was definitely less serious and in depth
I thought the Gadgetmobile reprised his role. I think he was still voiced by DL Hughly. The ONLY one who reprised his role. :)
