Court-métrage d'animation entièrement réalisé en images de synthèse sur Macintosh II, "Pencil Test" a été créé en 1988 à l'aide du logiciel Super3D de Silicon Beach Software. Parmi les personnes ayant rendu ce court possible, on retrouve deux futurs réalisateurs de chez Pixar que sont John Lasseter et Andrew Stanton, mais aussi un certain Larry Yaeger, qui venait tout juste d'entrer chez Apple Computer, environ un an seulement après la fin de Digital Productions.
Ce court-métrage a été numérisé à l'aide d'un Elgato Game Capture HD60 et reconstitué dans sa forme originale à partir du LaserDisc "State of the Art of Computer Animation [Volume 2]".
Ce disque LD, sorti en 1988, était édité par Odyssey Visual Design, une compagnie qui se fit connaître dans les années 90 avec la série "The Mind's Eye", qui compilait sous forme de long-métrages des séquences entièrement réalisées en images de synthèse, issues notamment de films tels que "The Lawnmower Man" (Le Cobaye).
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing this. I see the tiny bit of laser rot in the early bits, but I think this is the highest quality copy I've ever seen (and I worked on this!).
+Larry Yaeger Yeah, the seller warned me about this actually, and I wasn't gonna edit the video to that extent, but if I compare this rip to the ones I already found on UA-cam, I think you're quite right about it being the highest quality available yet. Remember that Hauppauge HD PVR2 I told you about a few months back? This video has actually been digitized with another box, a Game Capture HD60, from Elgato. The main difference between the two is the bitrate: 14 Mbps max with the Hauppauge / 30 Mbps with the Elgato. Quite an improvement, wouldn't you say? ;)

It's the source that has been encoded with that kind of bitrate, obviously, so yeah it improves on the other sources you will find here on UA-cam. Be my guest, check them out…

Techniquement c'etait quand meme pas terrible comparé a Luxo 2 ans auparavant. Sans doute pas les meme ambitions en terme de machine derriere les 2 projets.
+upsilandre Ah bah complètement, ce court devait montrer ce qu'il était techniquement possible de faire sur une machine bien plus faible techniquement (68000 à 16 Mhz, 1 MB de RAM sur les modèles standard). Pixar avait d'ailleurs créé Luxo Jr sur QUATRE machines séparées, et dont la taille était infiniment plus grosse que celle d'un micro comme le Mac II. Il faut comparer ce qui est comparable ;)

Hallucinant que Jack Palevich ait bossé là-dessus. Il a laissé une grosse empreinte chez ATARI Inc. (époque Warner) et avait créé DANDY qui a donné naissance, quelques années plus tard, à GAUNTLET chez ATARI GAMES. Merci Gorkab!

A touch of rot but otherwise a nice transfer, what gear have you used for the playback/digitization? Eventually want to get into top-notch VHS/LD transfers and cost is no object, want to get the most accurate picture possible just not even sure where to start looking
I use a Pioneer CLD-D515 with an Elgato Game Capture HD60, with a few adjustments on Premiere Pro in terms of blacks enhancements, and voilà 😁
+Gorkab nice, may have to look into that gamemagic unit! Lots of a->d conversion units on the market but few that seemingly do a good job. This looks clean. I have a cld-604 from around the same time, I'm sure they're very similar. Maybe not the best for LD but my main concern is VHS to get the best out of those 1st gen camera masters and home movies when they're finally archived
+MrRom92DAW As for VHS, well that's a tough one, and you wanna check my FFVI video, digitized from a J NTSC tape with a JVC player (I'll check the reference eventually) but it does PAL and NTSC, and I've had it for like +15 years, good stuff.
As for LD, I'd love to get my hands on one of those late Pioneer DVD / LD combos, I've heard they're the best around :)
Wouah cette vieille 3D! Ca me rappelle le clip de Def Leppard "Let's get rock", j'étais fou quand j'avais vu ça a la Tv étant gamin. Tu vas traiter aussi des premières images 3D dans les clips ou tu ne vas traiter que le ciné?
J'en ai un peu parlé dans l'épisode 10 à vrai dire, avec les clips "Money For Nothing" des Dire Straits et "Hard Woman" de Mick Jagger ;)

Laserdisc is an analog not that much popular type of discs. Some of them even had hq footage that can be transferred via component cable. Tho that type of discs were made in 1993. Correct calpture card and bitrate could really make difference when compared with vhs. Sometimes lines aprear on screen(like in this video) and that could be fixed... With frame by frame remaster. Still good video quality for how old video actually is.

I just realised you used scart. That's an europian standard and it has really good quality even better than component. 567i (pal stardard) is sometimes option.
@@zsin128 Yep, the video was captured using a SCART to HDMI converter, and an Elgato HD60. But the player never transmits NTSC signal at 576i, it's 480i.
@@Gorkab oh I didn't know it's ntsc I thought it was pal since pal is europian standard and scart is also and europian standard
@@zsin128 The player plays both NTSC and PAL discs actually, the detected signal is NTSC in the conversion box
