I remember going to a nice hotel on the Texas coast late 90's and we decided to hang out at the nice pool that day and just hit the beach in the evening, and brought our boombox and a shitload of beer down to the pool. There were at least a couple dozen strangers at the pool. We put this CD on first, fully expecting that within a few minutes people would object. But nobody did. We shared some beers, had a mini-party with strangers with this as the soundtrack, was a glorious moment for me and post-rock in general lol.
I yelled out the name of this song as a request for them to play this song as a chapel hill show at cat's cradle and they began their encore with a 12 to 15 minute version of this song. It was excellent. If you ever get the chance to see them live, modo fac
This band and this track in particular guided me to new worlds of music I hadn't yet discovered. In that sense, it's difficult to think of a single track that's been more important to me. Also, it kicks ass, and I still love it and Tortoise as they continue on with quality releases.
I have listened to this well over one hundred times, and I still really enjoy it. Dreamy and tranquil music. I like this as much as " Spiderwebbed" , a shorter song by Tortoise.
My favorite part was listening to this on vinyl, it just seemed like it came out of the 70's , like some lost artifact or memory, just a perfect 10 side, like a pink floyd side, you can't really ask for better than this from an experimental music group, around two minute mark I originally thought that something was wrong with my turntable! It was playing psychoacoustic effects on me!
I remember when I first found about Can, and I got heavily into them. Then I started branching out and looking for similar bands. That’s how I found out about Tortoise.

There are people who will read the bible for the first time and walk away believing every word it said and there are people who will listen to Tortoise for the first time and walk away disappointed. Some people just can't be helped
This was what defined them in my opinion, if any composition maybe a great summary of their work, I would say this and or maybe Gamera! I got the re-invigorated vinyl bug after hearing this on vinyl vs cd in 1996.
Stop worrying wether a video has likes or dislikes, or UA-cam will (and has) take that option away from you. Likes are just a popularity contest anyway. Like what you like, and forget about the rest.
Soooo cool and different. Loved it. Whats this genre called? Btw, that piece at 10:27 was featured in the Aussie Film 'Rover'. Its the reason why im here. Thanks for sharing.
+Paddy Scott Actually my opinion on this has changed since the time I commented. I quite like this song - I actually remembered a much different song from my first listen, that was truthfully all those adjectives. But now as I listen, this music is refreshing, calming and cool Very interesting, atmosphere and song in general.😊
haha sick, normally i smoke and listen to duster, but im extending my horizons into some more jazz rooted bands lately (mainly tortoise and herbie hancock)
It's another complete story from Slint, indeed! This was so more progressive than Slint itself, more like a project. In my opinion I am amazed about how versatile is David Pajo as a musician, seen his past and his influences, I still ask myself how could such a man like him change so many styles and prospectives. :)
Give me a great 2 minute Beatles song any day over this meandering crap. I guess if you were a weed head in the 90s and grew up with divorced parents and had no culture or resposibility and your head was lost in a cloud of pot smoke this song met your low expectations
I had heard about this group and looked up "Tortoise best song" and wound up here. Now I wonder why I even bothered. Very lame and I think a lot more progressive music is better than this. I could not finish this track after getting halfway, bc I was listening to the same droning, sure-as-hell-not-melodic keyboards and repetitive, uncatchy bass and guitar Overall, don't know how this band and genre is so liked in the first place... 👎🏻
+Bryce Hecox "droning, sure-as-hell-not-melodic" Dude you do realise this is post-rock right? This is not prog-rock (the common use of the adjective 'progressive' to such genres can be misleading). If you like ambient and krautrock (e.g. bands like Can, Neu!, Faust..) you should like at least some parts of this tune. I guess you just came here with the wrong expectations. I don't know what you had read about Tortoise
definitely not there best song in my opinion, check out night air and Rycodder, I do like this song, but I see where your coming from, it is a bit droning if you arent high (speaking from the stand point of a tortoise fan)

More than 20 years after release, this bassline still echoes and plays in my head endlessly.
I may have a problem.

i remember this one.. in a tent... smoking the green stuff.. trippin' like a butterfly
2 years after discovering this, and its still one of the most important songs I've ever heard.
Krautrock reinvented. This really is a life changing track. :)
I love the shift at 10:28...it’s a calm sense of desperation and that bass is kicking ass all choppy and shit
I have listened to this well over one hundred times, and I still really enjoy it. Dreamy and tranquil music. I like this as much as " Spiderwebbed" , a shorter song by Tortoise.
If you like this, definitely check out the band Can. They had a pretty big influence on Tortoise.
Music to vibe out to. Music to groove to. Music to get lost in.
Everything I love about Tortoise is right here in this jam.
Thought provoking
Once, I had a tortoise named winston churchshell
Haha, I had one too! I called her Tyutea.
I had a female one. Michelle.
they say the soul & spirit of Varèse Edgard, lays deep within this epic hit-you-hard composition_ _ _

Can is probably the best band ever, right?
Listening to this album high was an experience I’ll never get again

The "Electric Chariot" section
10:26 from The Rover. Such a sick movie. This track really complimented that scene too.

02:35 the 1st verse: an explosion of drums bass
04:42 keyboard solo (slightly out of tune)

11:44 cool entry of marimba and vibes
13:53 is it just me or was this part meant to sound like the record got scratched?
14:50 the weird drum noises of the 3rd verse
15:10 3rd verse: interesting keyboard noises - sounds like something from the future
16:47 the marimba comes back
17:45 a cool keyboard riff
