Get the Verity Sense instead. It replaces the OH1+ which hasn’t even received firmware updates in 4 years…
Have you tried wearing it on the upper or lower arm instead? Another option is maybe the 3rd party Phlex mount that they created.
Second problem with the buttons yes I agree is a real pain with OH1+, but they solved it with Verity Sense.
Last problem I agree. They should just add support to offline for Garmin in a firmware update.

It’s not somewhere I fancy wearing it on the arm but may go back and test it as I may like it.

Why aren't swimmers using a chest strap?

The only good one I know of is the Garmin HRM swim. It’s just more restrictive for swimming than it is for any other sport. Also fairly obvious and very rarely seen so I think there is a little stigma around it.
This would have given a good solution so be a bit more conspicuous and less restrictive.

@@cyclingunboxedWhat about arm straps? Have you ever tried any? Aren’t they more comfortable than Garmin chest strap?

How do you sync the data from the Garmin HRM Swim to new Garmin watches or the Garmin connect app? Are they still compatible?

      They are still comparable.
Your HRM needs to be synced with the watch first. You will want to connect it up before doing anything.
Once it’s connected, as soon as you put your HRM on and then open the activity section on your watch sit will connect straight away
