I have heard that Lurch was intended to be a silent character, but the first time he appeared on screen, Ted Cassidy improvised the iconic "You rang?" line. I have also heard that Ted Cassidy spent hours rehearsing Thing, trying to convey as much as possible through its gestures.
Actually he’s known as the Moon light man…..he killed people n ate them. Carel Struycken played Lurch in The Addams Family, an is a real serial killer, known for cannibalism, eating his victims, an sometimes chopping off the heads of his victims for display.
Everything about him was perfect, starting with the name. His makeup material showed every facial detail that could be comically utilized. His voice was just too good to not use even tho Lurch was supposed to be mute. One of the most perfectly cast characters in TV history. The best character in a great show.
Apparently he wasn't very fond of the role in later years. He did say though that there were things about the role that he liked even if he didn't much care for the role in general.
It's too bad Ted had love hate relationship with this character mostly because of his hight he felt Hollywood executives were picking him because how tell was just when he was school but may he rest in peace
Shortly before The Addams Family began to air, "Lurch" was a Dallas radio reporter and was on-air the day of the Kennedy assassination reporting on tragedy.
in a lot of episodes Morticia would say something an Lurch would just groan and shake his head, while walking away. Absolutely hilarious, and after 35 years of marraige I do the same thing when the missus comes up with a preposterous idea.
When my family and I went to England a long time ago, we stayed in a little bed and breakfast. There was a server in the kitchen who looked exactly like lurch! He must have been seven feet tall and always brought me extra bacon and was always so nice. So you see, the Lurches of the world are often misunderstood.
During the Butler's Ball episode, Wednesday tries to cheer Lurch up. He smile gently and pats her cheek. RIP, Ted Cassidy. I hope you know how much joy your portrayal brought into people's hearts.
I have two favorite Lurch moments. 1) Marty Balsalm is a police detective. Lurch pats him down, and takes his recovolver, and whereupon he emits his signature groan... Whereupon Balsalm show him his badge, and Lurch simply returns it to him. 2) Lurch vs. Robbie the Robot. "Retired"... Actually 3): Lurch shows up before the bell is rung and asks "You rang...?"
Lurch used to scare the sh** out of me as a child, I would leave the room. He would really frighten me ! My late father who was an actor enlightened me ''He's just making believe.. I'm sure he's a really nice guy in real life, and he's making believe he's Lurch"! Dad was so logical and convinced me. Before long, Lurch then became my favorite character on the show, and I couldn't get enough of him ! Also.. fun fact: Did you know that Ted Cassidy was Valedictorian of his high school ?
R.I.P. Ted Cassidy 1932-1979 AKA Lurch in the original sitcom The Addams Family (TV Series 1964-1966) 😓 and also that was my mom was childhood tv show when she was a kid back in the 60s
Ted Cassidy's Lurch to this day is the ONLY Lurch that actually had a character and actual role in the family. Every other version in the 90s movies, cartoons etc. Had zero purpose than a very large prop. On this series Lurch carried quite a few episodes and usually his episodes are the most memorable and beloved. R.I.P. to Ted Cassidy the only Lurch that's ever mattered.
I always thought Lurch was sexy. Should have been an indication to my 7 year old self that I was gay! The sounds he made were so perfect and his face was so elastic (when needed) or deadpan.
"Best of Lurch"? Nope. There were zero of his classic "YOU RANG" moments.🤦♂️ That's like making a "best of Fred Flintstone" video, with no "yabba dabba doo!"
Hhahaha I love him :D He is so wholesome,my favourite character. My surname is similiar to his name hahaha xddddd His name is Lurch,my surname is Lerch (but it's pronounced the same way)
Same here, well it's because of my current knowledge of the 90's film adaptation that I grew up with. I should definitely check out the original series.
@@tonymata8070 The movie with Raul Julia and Angelica Huston was based on the cartoon by Charles Addams, not on the TV series. Notice that the cartoon Gomez was a gruesome nod to Peter Lorre. Before the TV series came out, Hanna-Barbera Productions used recurring characters in their cartoons based on Addams' characters, named Mr. & Mrs. J. Evil Scientist. Mister Scientist even laughed like Peter Lorre.

@@ILIK3HATERZ actually, he only played the killer in a movie
And he did a fantastic job of it. Thing was real.

I came here today because I needed to hear Lurch and read this comment! 🥰
Can we give it up for Ted Cassidy? Easily the best Lurch. Conveys so much personality and humor with the simplest of phrases.
All the others try,but none can play Lurch like Ted did
Apparently he wasn't very fond of the role in later years. He did say though that there were things about the role that he liked even if he didn't much care for the role in general.
Yep, bravo 👏😎
It's too bad Ted had love hate relationship with this character mostly because of his hight he felt Hollywood executives were picking him because how tell was just when he was school but may he rest in peace
Absolutely!!
I loved it when he growled at the house guests. And there is certainly more than 3 minutes 20 seconds of the best of Lurch.
Ted Cassidy was hilarious! He was a great character and voice actor too. May he rest in peace.
Lurch was always my favorite!
yooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu rrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnngggggggg?
Uuuuuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........
Same here Dixie Belle
Yr
I have a secret crush on him! 🤭
Everyone has a Lurch in their friend group. I am the Lurch in mine, and proud of it.
Comic genius. I’ve forgotten how good and creative this was!
My favorite Lurch moments were when he’d just say, “Uhhhhh” in response to something he clearly didn’t like or want to do.
He's litterally me.
I've always thought Lurch was the most endearing character
Oh, me too! I found him oddly attractive.
How does one man convey so much emotion without showing any emotion at all?
Shortly before The Addams Family began to air, "Lurch" was a Dallas radio reporter and was on-air the day of the Kennedy assassination reporting on tragedy.
He was great actor/ voice over actor on Star Trek too. R.I.P. BIG GUY.
I know little of the Addams Family only the 90s films but Lurch here already my favorite character.
The tv series is fantastic. The show has a channel on PlutoTV- 24/7 Addams Family.
The ballerina scene is my favourite, the look on Wednesday and Lurchs face says it all!!!😁🖖
He adored her!
When you’re 6’4 people constantly compare you to him.
I had a boss like that when I worked at a movie theater, and ppl were either calling him Lurch or Herman
As a 6'4 man, I am now in a band and my nickname is Lurch😂😂
You are 5” too short. Ted Cassidy was 6’9”.
@@mm2024-7 no shit….. 🙃
My point went way over your head.
in a lot of episodes Morticia would say something an Lurch would just groan and shake his head, while walking away. Absolutely hilarious, and after 35 years of marraige I do the same thing when the missus comes up with a preposterous idea.
Definitely one of the funniest characters (next to John Aston) on the show.
When you realize Lurch is your spirit animal 😂
Lurch reminds me of my grandpa so much. I think that’s why I love him so much.
Me too.....😔

I feel that way about all extremely tall, quiet men....they are my weakness 🥰
No one registers disgust like Lurch.
"YYOOOOUUUU RRRAAANNNGGG ?"
Lurch is me whenever I need to socialize or put the effort into it.
Lurch is speaking to what’s left of my soul.
Good old Lurch. My favorite character. And Teddy played him to perfection.
Oh man, I could hold a conversation with him all day ! 👽
👽
Everybody loves lurch and Wednesday!
The scenes when Lurch would interact with Wednesday were so sweet I thought
During the Butler's Ball episode, Wednesday tries to cheer Lurch up. He smile gently and pats her cheek.
RIP, Ted Cassidy. I hope you know how much joy your portrayal brought into people's hearts.
I think Lisa Loring said the Ted was one of the nicest people she'd ever known

Oh, he does talk!! Awesome!! I love Lurch!!
Our lovely mare used to grunt the same way as lurch did, so we always called her lurch
Lurch rules!!
Ted Cassidy was hilarious as LURCH.
How could anyone so terrifyingly creepy also be so hilarious? 😂😂
Lurch used to scare the sh** out of me as a child, I would leave the room. He would really frighten me ! My late father who was an actor enlightened me ''He's just making believe.. I was always brooding in school and standing so tall my teachers called me Lurch although I was as bald as Uncle Fester
Lurch kicks ass!
He can dance baby!!!
Lurch is my spirit animal
It's hard NOT to love the Addams Family
Butler button-down Lurch is a "Statue of (Understated) Liberty".
I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did starting at 0:23
When Lurch finally did his high voice... X3
😂😂😂😂😂😂
me tooo!""! hahahhahaha
Yessss 😂😂😂😂
Lurch to the Addams family is what Curly was to the three stooges. The only reason I watch/watched those shows.
I love Lurch
LURCH!!
I love this man so much
If I were rich I would definitely hire a Lurch.
Some 7ft+ guy to dust, fetch, serve drinks, and answer the door.
It would be awesome.
As well as take out the trash, if you get my meaning.
Such a shame Ted Cassidy died young. "Guns or knives, Butch? Guns or knives! Pick!"
Haru!!!!! 😂
Ugh!!!!!
2:58 Me when I smoke
I used to watch this show just waiting for Lurch
Lurch, todo un personaje. Buenísimo.
Just wanted to hear Lurch's "ohhh."
Got called a “Lurch” by my dad today, can’t say he’s wrong

They just don't make TV like this anymore.
You rang
There's always that one big silent guy in old movies and TV series. You'll find many of them in the James Bond movies.
2:46 what song is this?
Lurch . . . a man (?) of few words.
Ted did good play a walking corpse named "Lurch", He's funnier than any man.
Morticia imitated Yoko Ono before there was a Yoko Ono.
Lurch is basically Peter Steele
🤔
It speaks IT SPEAKS
ayyy my fav
We all know someone that looks like this guy😂😭
Lurch is hot
Lurch (whose first name is unknown) definitely looks like Frankenstein's Monster.
McLaughlin Ports
You Rang?
Lurch acts like Jeff goldblun
very cool if you look up supercut widow cameos of batman he's in that UA-cam video
He didn't say, "you rang?"
and I thought lurch didn't talk much
