I just bought IL-2 and these videos are golden. I've watched this video probably three times in the last month because there is so much great information to gather. Thank you!

Great video. More people who fly Soviet should watch this. Bit frustrating to see on a server, teammates get into a scrap with 190s or 109s, and just get torn up because they're constantly turning or rolling while the German(s) just watch up above and wait for their bait to get dizzy. And could you look into the Macchi 202? It's a really underrated plane, I feel, just because there's often planes like 109F2-F4s or 190A3s, to choose from the same side. But it's actually a really fun and enjoyable plane, and can really surprise the hell out of Soviet pilots.

Last time I seen a m202 on a server I shot it down thinking it was a russian plane. This happens all the time which is one of the reasons its not used much

All fighters are energy fighters, just with different performance envelopes.

No such thing as "energy fighter". If it has an engine it's already "energy". And if it's not an unguided missile it's alredy "turn fighter".

I think in these how to videos it would be good to add important keybinds (as in keys you want to be able to reach without taking hand off the stick/throttle). It's hard to tell which keybinds are relevant to which aircraft, and it's good to know that mixture, radiators, etc are vital to Yak-1 for max performance and combat effectiveness, but certain engine controls are not relevant to the German aircraft. Some of this stuff is easy to pick up on during the engine management section, but I think it would be beneficial to have a separate section dedicated to relevant keybinds

Totally agree with the not putting tags on an aircraft, it was the biggest thing that held me back when i started flying the reds because i really felt like i should just turn all the time but ofcourse with no speed its an easy kill for a 109. Ive found the spitfire to be my favourite russian aircraft to fly although i do enjoy the yak after getting to grips with it, nothing feels better than turning a defensive fight into the offence and ruining their day.

Thank you. I have kept coming back to your videos as I have failed to find anything better. Yours are the best. I found them really educational as I have owned all the IL2 games and I have struggled to find good training. You sir are a great teacher in this serious business of war. I see all your videos in full.

being a veteran of the original game and forgotten battles, who hasn't flown for 10+ years, but just got BoS, and who is gubsmacked by how hard it is to kill a friggin AI 109-rookie, and how easy it is to stall, hit trees, plow the peasants fields for them and so on ... thinking "how on earth am I even gonna get bullets on this guy" - you're observations are spot on. "Don't get low on deck" - "the 109 can outturn you at slow speeds" - "dont let your better turn-rate fool you into turn-fighting without some very good reason to do so". All my frustrations listed as "DO NOT"-items :)
    Thanks a lot!

Thank you SO much for this video. I'm new to IL-2 and of all the fighters (in the base game) I'm finding that I really like the Yak. It's forgiving to fly and I like the manual engine controls. After practicing for several hours I thought I'd give the 109 a try and I HATE the visibility after getting used to the Yak's. I appreciate being able to slam the throttle open and not having to worry that much.

Pretty much my thoughts in one video. Americans love to categorise fighters in "energy" "turn" etc.
That is why they lost in Nam, cause they tried to use F-4s as BVR fighter, whilst they failed to understand that it could turn very well on lower speeds due to large wing area. Therefore, these idiots tried to play it as a boom and zoom fighter, and a MiG-21 is an interceptor, that can easily chase anything, and you can't "zoom" from that.

  • @onecheman

Flying at servers online figured out that without track IR player puts himself in disadvanges. Spoting other planes at merges is difficult using view buttons on keyboard or button on joystick. Plus if not using team speak makes even worse
, since some pilots fly in pairs or in organized groups (crouds) of three or four planes. So not being able to always control position of competetor at merge doesn't allow to make correct monuvering.

  • @old_guard2431

Canopies on Russian fighters, when to open & close, speed limits, etc? Optical quality of the canopies seems to vary from model to model - you don't even get one in the Ishak because they were so bad the pilots threw them away. For the Yak-1 with already something of a speed disadvantage the drag of an open canopy would naturally balance against the increased vision.
Maybe this is too obvious to be worth covering. Open the canopy to help spot distant adversaries (or friends) but then close it as soon as practical to lose the extra drag.

Around 13:30 you mention that you want to be about 200m away from your enemy when you take a shot (or when they fill up half of your target reticle. With that said, What is your gun convergence range when flying a yak?

    • @SheriffsSimShack

Sheriff's Sim Shack wow thanks for the fast answer. I'm currently setting up the game for my VR headset. I have most of the controls down for the yak. This is one of the last things that I needed. I asked a question earlier about VR, to answer it VR is nice for tracking but spotting seems to be slightly more difficult.
Thank you for the quality content and resources that you put out, it really helps people like me who are just starting out in this game. Seriously, You're awesome.

A very good video! I'm a newbie trying to fly combat ww2 planes and I can't find technical info on Il-2: Sturmovik's planes. What are the corner speeds of each plane for example? I f you know where to find those, I'll be thankful. Thank you!

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  5 років тому +1

Most aircraft reach best turn performance roughly at 260-270 kph. Corner speed is less important in prop planes, since as long as you are out of gunrange you dont have to turn in.

Hi ,I have, just started using the Yak 1, on full manual control , rads, mix prop rpm etc , no problem, but noticed in combat, I was unable to achieve full throttle, during a flight , I checked my temps ,ok mixture 100,%super charger low or defending on altI could see nothing wrong but , even when giving full gas the motor would only give 25% or so? Disengaged, backed off then the motor responded, ok , am I missing something? ,many thanks in anticipation, Leigh
