  • In this first part of two, Bhante Vimalaramsi reads the instructions for breathing direct from the Satipatthana Sutta and then explains and reveals, what almost all other teachers in the world have, left out! -The "Tranquilize" or the Relax step.
    Please be sure to watch Part 2 where he explains how the process actually works and why this is so different. Also the story of a man who went through most of the Vipassana Knowledges then questioned whether they were part of the Buddha's teaching.

    I wish I could personally thank Bhante, because lately the practice has shifted for me as I explore the calming stage of anapanasati (passambhayam kayasankharam...) He is right, with each breath we relaax this body sitting here, more and more...it grows tranquil, but in full awareness. Old stored up bodily tensions are being dissolved away and my health in general is improving, just from anapanasati! My heartfelt thanks to Bhante Vimalaramsi (and Ven Thanissaro also, I must add). _/I\_

    So the tranquilize/relax step is what directly releases suffering? Interesting. I'll be giving it the importance it deserves from now on.

    This exposition by Bhante Vimalaramsi has helped me SO much with the stage of 'calming' as discussed in the anapanasati section of Satipatthana Sutta. I have a long way to go, but already I can report that to be fully aware of the entire body, in silence - simply observing it's breathing, in and out - and then, gently calming this process - is healing to both mind and body. That's my experience, anyway.

    4:30 - bingo... relax... it is, along with "letting go", refocusing on the breath, and mindfulness - the key to having jhanas come... When i sit for 20 mins and no jhana... and then look at the body - and relax it - consciously - it all falls into place and jhana visits... the process can continue... lovely...

    Well you can thank him. I will forward this kind comment to him. Please take a look at his book it fully explains the breath practice with full background. While he considers breath important he tends more toward teaching the Metta and the Brahma Vihara practice as it is very fast and very effective as our students have demonstrated. Dj at Dhamma Sukha

    If you follow the sutra you will see, there is air on the upper lip. But he is absolut right. Samadhi is your good time as buddhist.

    Bhante V. always presents clear teachings, very nice to listen to.
    In regards to cessation in the Suttas. From my readings it seems that the 'clear moment' he is talking about, is sustained in the 4th Jhana with equanimity, and it is then that one contemplates the arising and cessation of phenomena. Would this be accurate?

    @2:00 I read "parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā" where "satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā" means "having established, or made to be present, mindfulness," and "parimukha" can very well mean "around the mouth." There is definitely debate about what "parimukha" exactly refers to here. PED has it defined as merely, "facing, in front." "Pari˚" is a prefix meaning, "all around; altogether; completely," and "mukha" is "mouth; face; entrance; opening; front." I don't have any problem with teaching different meditation techniques, but to pretend (or be ignorant of) the Pāḷi that is the basis of this translation and to insist that it means 'x' by relying solely on the translation is careless. In short, the very idea that it is meant to mean focusing on where the sensation of breath is felt, is found in the Pāḷi that this is translated from.
    As for "tranquillizing the bodily-formation" in MN 44.13, the Buddha defines what is meant by "bodily-formation," "In-breathing and out-breathing, friend Visākha, are the bodily formation...." And the word that Bhikkhu Bodhi translates as "tranquilizing" here is the present participle ("passambhayaṃ") of "passambhati," which can also mean: calming down, quieting, allaying. It's calming/tranquilizing the breath. I thus fail to see how this sentence can be taken to mean "relax." I love the reminder that Vimalaramsi gives to relax, but there is no reason to force a concept into a sentence that clearly isn't saying it. All he had to do was point out that 'worry and restlessness' are one of the five hindrances and so it is to be allayed.
    I'm no expert in Pāḷi or in the suttas, merely a student of both, and I don't take issue with the methods Vimalaramsi teaches, but I find his manner of presentation disingenuous and sloppy, thus concerning.

      Blah.. I understand the point you and "billymac29" below are making. But whether or not these teachings can be said to be Buddhas teachings or Vimalaramsi's interpretations of them; when one relaxes the body, the breathing calms down. When one calms the breathing, the body relaxes. It's the same effect. Except, if you instruct someone to "calm down the breathing", it will most likely become a doing, something opposite of what is meant in effect. When you instruct someone to relax, the calming of breathing happens by itself. Without a sense of doership. In that releasing, you find the present moment experience being naturally less "agitated" and more alive.

      Chris Valade , "parimukham satiň upatthapetva" means, parimukham means what we take from all our six senses, from eyes, ear, nose etc., so we have be concentrate about the all things we get from our six senses and after that take only good things and let go bad things. That's is Buddha teaching as I understand...

    @jaysson111 The context is diferent. I highly doubt that in the Anapanasati Sutta, when the Buddha talks about the body in one sentence, but uses the same word to mean

    ..".cravings causes tension in the head and mind ".....the mind has no location...so should the whole body and feeling in the mind be relaxed? ...I find it easy to relax the body ...especially the abdomen and heart, shoulders and neck area but relaxing the head is not so easy ...any suggestions ?🙏🙏🙏.

      Hi Sheila! Don't worry too much about the body but do relax the head area - but don't dwell on this too long - get back to your object of meditation after a 6R process and continue. The tension will disappear. It is only a type of thought energy that manifest in the body; but it begins in thought and the mind as Tanha or craving.

    Those two white Buddha statues on a shelf, are they the same or different... There are white, yellow and purple flowers in a back round and blue blinds farther over there in the back stage. Why this monk does not see that... Meditation Buddha talking about, is too easy to miss. If you are tired after a workout your breath is heavy and short, violent. When you sleep at rest, your breath is slow and long, relaxed, gentle. In meditation you learn mindfulness (example: your breath). Be mindful here

    Actually it does say Parimukhn sati upathpetwa, and that means keeping the Sati around or on the mouth or face... What do you say about that?

      Parimukha means "in front of"....it doesn't literally mean,"in ur face"....!!!...

    Hello Sir, my parents specially my mom is not happy with me following Buddha's teachings. She has stopped talking to me .
    She has a strong belief in personal soul and personal God. :(

      It's ok. Just don't discuss it and don't try to change her opinion. It is best to be a "Buddha" instead of a "Buddhist" - In other words you keep your views to yourself if they are not welcome. Don't try to change other people. Follow the 5 precepts and other people can't help be impressed with you!

      Very hard to practice purity. My own parents just watch TV, entertainment. They gossip, say bad words not even following their religion correctly.

    This Bhante talk only about shorter version of Mahasatipatthana sutta from Digha Nikaya. One point meditation is buddhist practice to realising Samma-samadhi. We know what is Vipassana and sati in thai forest tradition. But without Samadhi you will have false sati. Go to jungle and meditate without samadhi, its impossible because only Samadhi can protect you against animals, plants and people. Go to forest and use it, meditation in forest is different than meditation in 2 weeks Vipassana course.

      Sama-dhi means "tranquil Intellect"...sama means "tranquil",dhi means,"intellect or wisdom".....sama-dhi z mistranslated as concentrated.....it z not the practise of concentration technique,rather it z the relaxed and composed ,collected mind dat z the result of right mindfulness and attention.......!!!...

    Buddha didnt teach any technique, buddha, buddha teached samadhi meditation (anapana-sati, loving kindness) and sati for daily life based on 4 satipathanas. After longer practice your one-point meditation will clear kilesas in your mind. Without any kilesas your mind will be like mirror. This mirror reflects every phenomenas in present moment (vipassana). Vipassana and Samatha are two aspects of Samadhi-bhavana, not two techniques,is not manual for awaking.

    I can not transcribe this please help: he says: there is the third novel truth, the saving of suffering??? every thine you let it go of craving this is saving? thank you if it is not correct please correct me.

      Dear Cintronelle,
      He is saying "There is the third noble truth- the CESSATION of suffering. Every time you let go of craving this is cessation (or stopping of suffering). In other words when you 6r and let go and relax the tension and tightness in your thought or hindrance then you are letting go of suffering i that moment. I think your translate program is not working very well? Metta David

      Hello- I am not completely sure about your question but Bhante teaches mostly the Metta/Brahma Vihara Meditation. He does teach the breath meditation as he talks about in this video but he is trying to explain how the Breath is really done here and how it differs from what other people are teaching. But he recommends that you take Metta as the object and use that as it is Faster and Easier to do. He has much success with people going through all the Jhanas quickly with the Metta object. The same principles are used in Metta as the Breathing except that the object of Metta is the Feeling of Lovingkindness as your object of meditation. I strongly recommend you try the Metta instead of doing the Breath. You can hear him give instructions on Metta here or many other videos.

      Thank you for your answer it is so kind of you, he talked about a spiritual friend, and I guess in the process of meditation he said pick a friend that you sincerely wish well etc etc, is this the part of love and kindness meditation? thank you.

      Yes - The first thing you do is send Metta to yourself for 10min. Then pick a spiritual friend who is the same sex and is alive that you like and respect and for the rest of the sitting send lovingkindness to them for the rest of the sitting. Later on the instructions will change to radiating to the directions but stay with the spiritual friend until the teacher says to change.

    You must be a Buddha yourself, yes? Tell me why sky is blue and the moon is round? Forget about sutras. Sutras are only Buddha's words. If you want to understand Buddha you must understand Buddha's MIND. What is Buddha's mind? It is same as yours. What is that? Do you see today's clouds, sun and feel icy wind? Did you sleep well last night? How was your lunch? How did it taste? What is your favorite fruit, vegetable, chocolate, candy... whatever? You are a philosopher, not awakened Buddha, yet.

      You must be confused about many things. Buddha means awakened. So anyone practicing the Buddhist path can awaken i.e can be a Buddha. THE Buddha as a historical figure is being that has a special mission based on lifetimes of spiritual development and merit.
