- For narrowboats, barges and every other kind of boat that travels to Gloucester from the River Severn, Sharpness New Docks is the beginning of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
Located on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, England, are a complex of docks that have played an important role in the economic and social history of the region.
The old docks had been in operation since 1827 and the new docks replacing the old docks in 1874 both have served as a hub for trade and transportation of goods, including coal, timber, grain, and other products.
In the 19th and early 20th century, the docks became a major port for the export of coal from the Forest of Dean Coal Field in west Gloucestershire, and later for the import of petroleum products from the Middle East.
The initial docks were built on an artificial island in the River Severn, and were used primarily for naval vessels. Over the years, the docks were gradually expanded and improved, with the construction of additional docks, quays, and warehouses.
By the late 19th century, the docks had become a major centre for the import and export of goods including coal from the Forest of Dean Coal Field, timber, and grain and were home to several major industries.
By the mid-1900's, Sharpness Docks had become one of the largest coal exporting ports in the country. At its peak, the docks were handling over two million tons of coal per year.
The docks also served as a major port for the import of petroleum products from the Middle East. The docks were home to several fuel storage tanks.
In the early 20th century, the docks were the largest port, in the United Kingdom, for the import of Middle Eastern petroleum products.
In the late 20th century, the docks underwent a major refurbishment and redevelopment. Which included the construction of a new quay and the installation of new storage tanks.
The refurbishment also included the construction of a new marina.
The docks also serve as a major port for the transportation of freight by ship and rail. They remain an important part of the economic and social fabric of the region, and are an important part of the history of the region.

The higher swing bridge is hand cranked. I watched the Matthew pass through there a couple of years ago. Two men did the cranking and when open, they were trapped in the middle of the bridge itself!
Could you do a video on how good the two paths are? I would love to cycle from gloucestercto sharpness but some areas are so bad they are not fit for purpose.
