Materials:
1 x Strip of Leather - I use 3.5 - 4 mm Bridle Butt
1 x Buckle
1 x Strip of Looping

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for making this video. My wife bought me a large leather craft set from Tandy Leather for Christmas, per my "list". I only took everything out and set the tools up. I was really hesitant to try making anything because I didn't know what I was doing. Recently, my stepson motivated me by asking if I could make a strap for his Civil War era canteen. I learned how to use the lace maker and made the strap, and even sewed the buckle on. But I neglected to place a loop. My dilema was, how do I place the loop when there isn't enough strap to put the loop under. I watched five videos on how to make a belt, hoping to find the answer. None of them had the answer....until yours. Now I can finish it. Thank you

I am really enjoying your channel its clear and concise which means I don't have to fast forward through the less important information to get to the point :) Question: What edge dye are you using and do you use Veg Tan, Chrome tan or both?
Hi Emma, great to hear you enjoy the videos 🙂 I use veg tanned leather for most of my work a only use chrome tanned hides for my padding or linings. The dye I used for this project is from Metropolitan Leather. Hope that helps. Jo

Would you be able to advise what thickness of leather that I should purchase for belt making please?
I currently have my eyes on a Ghost Bridle shoulder which comes in the Thickness sizes of; 1.5mm, 2-2.5mm, 2.5-3mm, 3-3.5mm.

Hey Shanice, for belts I would suggest 3-3.5mm as it will last longer than the thinner options.
I love the way you use your head knife for almost everything....I am not that talented.
Also, do you do any machine stitching at all?
That's 11 yrs of solidly using it 😂 I trained as a saddler so you need sturdy knives for that and Im so used to it now 😊
I have a sewing machine but I don't really use it. It's their if I need to make anything with lots of stitching like lined belts, rifle slips, ect to keep the cost of them down. Hand stitching is so much stronger so it's my preferred choice.

Joe, great video. Can I ask you to confirm how you measure the belt? I have watched numerous videos, and am now confuse which is the correct way to size a belt, either from the tip of the buckle or from the fold on belt? Hope that makes sense.
I personally go from inside the buckle to the hole most used, that way if the buckle on the new belt is longer/shorter, the overall belt will still be the right size. Much better than just measuring the leather only 👍
This was a great video, thanks for making it! I have ordered a strip of bridle butt to try and make one. I had a couple of question: do I have to have an egg point on the end that has the buckle or could I leave it squared off? Also, is it ok to leave the edges un-dyed or do I have to paint them? If I leave them un-dyed, should I just use tokonole to finish them?
Glad you enjoyed watching 😁 you can put whatever point you want on your belt, the egg point is my personal fave which is why I use it all the time 😂 if you leave them undyed I would use something like tokonole so that it helps seal the edges and gets them nice and shiny 👍

Did you use a wheel to determine where the stitches go?
That takes a lot of practice, the point you make with your half round knife, no-one could do that first time, or second.

I was perplexed by the option to keep the stitches on the out side of the belt near the bucklet. What purpose does it serve. Loved the video. But did find this odd and I would choose not to do it this way for looks. But I know nothing. So I am asking.
When the belt is done up you don't see the stitches and when stitching in a loop, it is easier to have the stitch markers behind it rather than under it.

Good to hear you like the videos.
With belts the easiest option is to get a measurement off an existing belt and measure from the inside of the buckle to the hole used most. If you have people coming to see you, you can have a measuring belt that you use for this. For measurements without an existing belt, then get the person to measure where their trousers sit - I try not to go on general trouser measurements as depending on where they sit on you will depend on the size needed, so make them measure! Then you can take that measurement for the new belt

One good formula is to measure from a exsisting belts bend (of buckle) to your favorite hole, then add 10.5 inches. Once thats done measure 3.5 inches in on buckle side. That will be the center mark for the oblong punch. Then on other end mark 7 inches in. This will be your mark for favorite (most used) hole. Then make a couple of holes on each side. Fairly simple way that works very well. Happy making.
Hi Joe. Thanks for a great video. I learned some of the finer points from you. My remaining problem with be.ts is that the die bleeds onto my trousers. Not a whole lot, but enough to give a less than professional result. I've tried going easy on the amount of die used. Followed by Gumtrag. Also tried a couple of layers of Gumtrag. Also tried bees wax on top of that. OK each layer seems to help a bit. But nothing so far eliminates the rub off. Any suggestions?
Have you tried acrylic resolene? Or tolkonole?

Hello, it depends on the size of buckle you are using. For a 1 1/4" belt I will mostly use a 38 crew punch but some buckles require a size up or down depending on the tongue size. Hope that makes sense.

I am not too sure of the brand, but it has a leaver action in it so that it is easier to punch the holes. The sprenger ones are very similar to the one I have.
What is your view on staining the hole where the buckle tongue passes through?
Hi Doug, I don't generally do it but there is no reason not to. I think if you did then it would be worth staining in the holes as well so it all matches 👌
Love your videos but would like to ask where do you get your thicker leather from in the bright colours? I can find up to 2mm. I am in the UK
Hi Rebecca, I use metropolitan Leather for the coloured hides. They have some listed on their site and they also do custom colours where you can send in a swatch and they'll colour match 👍

@@dmail00 yeah, for stitching in 7 stitches per inch I use that size as it fills the stitch marks. Think that's coming out of the saddlery world as all the videos I see on here people use much thinner thread than me 😂

I don't think this is supposed to be a beginner's guide to belt making. It's a walk through of the steps.
That's the beauty of UA-cam: you can pause it, rewind it, re-watch it, and even slow it down yourself. THe little gear symbol at the bottom of the screen (Settings) has a tab for Playback Speed where you can slow it down or speed it up to your liking. Hope that helps.

Hiya, I generally make my own as I have a splitting machine that does the job. You can do it by hand but that is super fiddly or you purchase a thin hide/offcut for looping around 1.5mm thick .hope that helps. Jo

Hey Jim. I did the cordwainers diploma at Capel Manor college in Enfield then did a 3 Yr apprenticeship. Mostly doing bespoke bridle work and then repairs. The training ment that I have made 3 saddles, 2 Pony ones and then a 17" gp saddle. I also made a set of harness to complete my harness making exam. Even though most my stuff now is dog collars and gifts/accessories I am a qualified saddler and harness maker member of the Society of Master Saddlers
