I think there is a mistake in some part of the video. Palpatine's goal during The Phantom Menace was to unleash political change so he could get elected as Supreme Chancellor. That political change was provoked by the taxation of trade routes and the later blockade/invasion of Naboo. That is why Palpatine is literally the Phantom Menace. If Amidala signed the treaty legitimizing the invasion of Naboo, or stayed at Coruscant while the Trade Federation controlled the planet, the Clone Wars would have erupted sooner than actually did in Attack of the Clones. But for this outcome to happen Palpatine had to become the next Supreme Chancellor. Second, Padme was right when pointing to Count Dooku as responsible for the attempt on her life at the beginning of Episode II but the real mastermind behind those assasination attempts was Supreme Chancellor Palpatine himself. He wanted to get rid of Padme so the Military Creation Act could be approved.
You see that Palpatine is rattled more in a deleted AOTC scene where Padme appears in the senate immediately after her attempt like what Typho was referring to with "please, this bill is very important" and she changes the dynamics of the dull debate going on by introducing her assassination attempt with new energy and passion to the discourse saying the bill was the target, wake up! seeming to cause a reaction. Palpatine then feigns concern for her wellbeing, its seriousness and the weariness of the other members in chamber and quickly wraps it up- postponing the vote until he has regained control without her there.
For what known of the trivia of the Phantom Menace, and the Prequel Trilogy a whole is that is based on forced trade relations between Japan and the rest of the world, when the Admiral Arthur Perry open the trade by firing the cannons of his ship, and created a civil war between the Shogunate and the Empire supported by the western powers, mostly the U. S. and the British Empire.

Not because he lacks a soul, but because to reveal his eyes would be to reveal that soul, to reveal his true self. Sidious, not Palpatine, is the truth of this man and it is a truth that he can never entirely and honestly reveal to another.

Most fleshed out character/ politician besides Anakin, but Anakin's character is based on a reverse hero's journey which isn't nearly as complicated as palpy. Likewise Luke is just the hero's journey. Palpy stands out, in that he's not a 2D villain, he has ideas and points and an ideology he's open about. He feels like a person, albeit a self centered one.
I don't know if Palpatine/Sidious is the best character in the SW movies, it depends on the preferences of the audience really. But I think that Palpatine/Sidious is without a doubt the best villain in cinema (in the worst case scenario he would be in the top 3 villains). The reason is that he is extremely powerful in the force, but very intelligent and cunning at the same time!

There are two things that mar this otherwise excellent portrayal of Palpatine's character: - His plan to lure the Rebellion into a trap was not born out of arrogance - it was a very reasonable plan. He knew that Luke grew so strong in the force that turning him to the dark side would require a tremendous effort. By making Luke face the impending demise of his friends and the fall of the Rebellion, Palpatine wanted to drive Luke to despair, which would open his mind to the dark side. And his plan worked... until the very last moment when Luke cut off Vader's hand, only to realize that he was doing the same thing that Vader did to him, and pulled himself back in time to avoid getting trapped in the dark side. Palpatine's hubris led him to believe that Luke's short immersion into the Dark Side would be enough to convert him. - Trying to describe him as the manifestation of the seven sins is a stretch at best. For example, when you speak about "sloth", you misunderstand why he delegated power to his underlings. Establishing the Empire was only a stepping stone for Palpatine. What he really wanted was the ability to pursue his studies of the Dark Side without the meddling of the Jedi - he wanted to learn the secret of immortality. Not in the form of a bodiless existence, but true physical immortality. To achieve this goal, he needed a capable government and military that could deal with the day-to-day matters of the Empire. (On a side note: the Tarkin doctrine was not as misguided as many fans believe: Palpatine knew that even the 25 thousand Star Destroyers of the Empire were not enough to maintain peace and order in the Galaxy. He needed the Death Star so it could play the same role as the nuclear weapons during the cold war, although in this case the threat of total annihilation was unilateral. The deterrence that the Battle Station offered and the Imperial bureaucracy would have allowed Palpatine to focus his attention on discovering the deepest secrets of the Force.)
I love Mace, but I can't blame Anakin for what he did. He was put in a messed up situation, at his most fragile and unsure. You're a Jedi, you have a code, and you have to follow it, no matter what, or it's pointless. Anakin believed in the code, and he was constantly watching it being broken by the highest Jedi, or being asked to break it by them. The Chancellor himself pretty much demands that Anakin straight up execute a literally unarmed Sith, who poses no further threat. He protests, at first, saying "I shouldn't do this. This isn't the Jedi way.". After that, the Jedi council asks him to spy on a government official, and he says, "This isn't the Jedi way.". Then, he sees Mace Windu about to kill the government official, Sith or not, and again he says, "This is not the Jedi way. He must be kept alive." The Jedi did more to push him to the dark side than Palpatine ever could have. Anakin made a split second decision, trying to save Padme at that point, because in Anakin's eyes, the Jedi aren't any less evil than the Sith, so he chose to save Palpatine. The Jedi really failed Anakin, he really needed a good example, he needed Jedi actually following their own code, showing they actually have these values and principles they claim to have, making them the "good guys". He was in a no win situation, and he immediately regretted what he did. He knew there was no going back, all he could do at that point was do whatever it took to save Padme. Why even bother caring about anything else? He was shown that there aren't any "good guys", just a bunch of liars and hypocrites. I think the Jedi are the king of stupid, tbh💁🏻♀️ They were basically unintentional allies of the Sith😂
A shame you ignored the canon fact that Palpatine returned as a zombie, tied to the underworld of Exegol. Not only does this further prove Palpatine cunning, how thematic resonant his sense of ultimate evil is and show his tenacity but it backs up many of your own points.

Sidious is an archetype of the coming Dark Ruler masquerading as a Lightbearer. This conclusion is so obvious that I believe George Lucas was using his insight into the Bible to be cute through this movie. The ways things are proceeding even today seem to forecast a reality consisting of manipulated kingdoms fighting each other culminating in a final evil kingdom or "Empire" that will seem necessary and good at first. Was Georgie trying to be slick? Did he make this series for the true hidden rulers of this world? DId he plagiarize Revelation? We may never know.

Palpatine is one of the most obviously evil characters to ever appear on screen. Every single time he appeared you could just tell he's a slimy prick. He's not cool or interesting. He's a geriatric politician. Sith used to eat planets and be too angry to die. Palpatine pulls strings behind the scenes and argues about laws. I always wished we had a better villain in the OG trilogy. He's just so lame I can't take him seriously.
Comedicly overpowered Legends characters always one-upping each other are lame. You're welcome to love that stuff, but it's practically fan fiction. Each character exists to influence a specific world in a specific manner by many different authors. That's why power levels are so ridiculous and variable in Legends. Now i'm an old boy, i was 12 when ROTS came out, i remember the confusion and embarrassment at that text in the titles, because proper english requires you not to attribute positive characteristics to a negative action/subject. The opening text is from the view of a news bulletin, a simple passive onlooker watching everything that's happening and reporting it in a digestible, simple way. It's always very specific about good vs evil, giving accurate and clear adjectives for them. But when you say that conquerers and enslavers of worlds and mass killers of various innocent beings, deserters of the legitimate galactic government, terrorists and committers of high treason with their legions of robots and generals- are heroes? This never made sense, still doesn't. I would even argue against saying they are brave in any way on that side because that's still using a positive term to describe a negative, villainous force- it's not brave if it is in service of greed, treachery, misery, bloodlust. That is how the CIS has been portrayed. It was not until 2011? when there was finally, we think, a worthwhile explanation for that quote, with the TCW episode using the quote as the title. The example given in it being a senator/representative from each side wishing to come together, draw up a ceasefire and begin negotiations. Its the first and last time we see an indication of any positive deed from the CIS. Oh and a minor point, Sidious didn't disfigure himself, he unmasked himself. For years actually carefully using makeup and other methods (Obi wan was seen having his whole face altered with a serum in TCW to look like Hardeen, so anything is possible now in this regard) to hide his true, degraded, decayed form from the public.. You see, you don't get rotting fingernails, sunken eyes, grey skin, rotted teeth- from lightning and the burning damage that entails.
the heroes on both sides is accurate and relevant... you have to remember that the crux of Star Wars is "point of view" and from the separatists POV there ARE heroes on their side... remember that at large the separatists aren't some cackling enemy camp, they had legitimate beef with the corruption of the republic and wanted real change, they had their own senate and governance and elected leaders, the fact that they were created and manipulated by the Sith is irrelevant through the lens that the majority of the people comprising the confederacy were just regular people that wanted better for their planets and families.

We literally just see a cackling camp, that wants Amidala's head, that sentenced three republic members to death by exotic monsters without a fair trial, and created a secret mass army of battle droids and illegal wmd's. No use reciting what you know now 10-20 years later, i know they tried to fix it, i even cited the example but its not as simple as there just being "points of view". Gg is described as "fiendish".. in ep4 the empire is described as "evil", their agents are "sinister". in ep5 Vader is described as "evil". Throughout, the rebels are described as "brave", "struggling to restore freedom to the galaxy", referred to as "freedom fighters". One side always knew it was evil, one side knew it was good, there were no heroes on both sides, just one side. So let's be clear, my argument was there was no precedent for the crawl to be so neutral as to suggest that both sides are the same in their struggle and in the same breath call one side's leaders "fiendish" and "ruthless". That's called not being clear and concise with the english language.

I love Mace, but I can't blame Anakin for what he did. He was put in a messed up situation, at his most fragile and unsure.
You're a Jedi, you have a code, and you have to follow it, no matter what, or it's pointless. Anakin believed in the code, and he was constantly watching it being broken by the highest Jedi, or being asked to break it by them.
The Chancellor himself pretty much demands that Anakin straight up execute a literally unarmed Sith, who poses no further threat. He protests, at first, saying "I shouldn't do this. This isn't the Jedi way.".
After that, the Jedi council asks him to spy on a government official, and he says, "This isn't the Jedi way.".
Then, he sees Mace Windu about to kill the government official, Sith or not, and again he says, "This is not the Jedi way. He must be kept alive."
The Jedi did more to push him to the dark side than Palpatine ever could have. Anakin made a split second decision, trying to save Padme at that point, because in Anakin's eyes, the Jedi aren't any less evil than the Sith, so he chose to save Palpatine.
The Jedi really failed Anakin, he really needed a good example, he needed Jedi actually following their own code, showing they actually have these values and principles they claim to have, making them the "good guys".
He was in a no win situation, and he immediately regretted what he did. He knew there was no going back, all he could do at that point was do whatever it took to save Padme. Why even bother caring about anything else? He was shown that there aren't any "good guys", just a bunch of liars and hypocrites.
I think the Jedi are the king of stupid, tbh💁🏻♀️ They were basically unintentional allies of the Sith😂

I would argue he is the greatest villain in cinema history. The writing in the films don’t give him justice in how twisted and deranged he truly is.
A shame you ignored the canon fact that Palpatine returned as a zombie, tied to the underworld of Exegol. Not only does this further prove Palpatine cunning, how thematic resonant his sense of ultimate evil is and show his tenacity but it backs up many of your own points.

@@watchvidjediGeorge Lucas intended to give him the name Sheev in the Underworld TV series, but the series was never made. In Plagueis the name was kept a mystery, but in the 2014 Tarkin novel he was given it officially. So it's post Disney...but from George himself. So it kind of breaks even lol.

Sidious is an archetype of the coming Dark Ruler masquerading as a Lightbearer. This conclusion is so obvious that I believe George Lucas was using his insight into the Bible to be cute through this movie. The ways things are proceeding even today seem to forecast a reality consisting of manipulated kingdoms fighting each other culminating in a final evil kingdom or "Empire" that will seem necessary and good at first. Was Georgie trying to be slick? Did he make this series for the true hidden rulers of this world? DId he plagiarize Revelation? We may never know.

Palpatine is one of the most obviously evil characters to ever appear on screen. Every single time he appeared you could just tell he's a slimy prick.
He's not cool or interesting. He's a geriatric politician. Sith used to eat planets and be too angry to die. Palpatine pulls strings behind the scenes and argues about laws.
I always wished we had a better villain in the OG trilogy. He's just so lame I can't take him seriously.
Comedicly overpowered Legends characters always one-upping each other are lame. You're welcome to love that stuff, but it's practically fan fiction. Each character exists to influence a specific world in a specific manner by many different authors. That's why power levels are so ridiculous and variable in Legends. "This is da strongest guy doing da strongest most evil thing eva" - "Nooooo, THIS GUY is da strongest, he eats PLANETS" - "WELL, THIIIIS GUY wears invincible armor after being experimented on by da evil aliens from outside da Star Wars galaxy!!" Bleh, I say.

Also must disagree with one other point, the "heroes on both sides" debacle. Now i'm an old boy, i was 12 when ROTS came out, i remember the confusion and embarrassment at that text in the titles, because proper english requires you not to attribute positive characteristics to a negative action/subject. The opening text is from the view of a news bulletin, a simple passive onlooker watching everything that's happening and reporting it in a digestible, simple way. It's always very specific about good vs evil, giving accurate and clear adjectives for them. But when you say that conquerers and enslavers of worlds and mass killers of various innocent beings, deserters of the legitimate galactic government, terrorists and committers of high treason with their legions of robots and generals- are heroes? This never made sense, still doesn't. I would even argue against saying they are brave in any way on that side because that's still using a positive term to describe a negative, villainous force- it's not brave if it is in service of greed, treachery, misery, bloodlust. That is how the CIS has been portrayed.
It was not until 2011? when there was finally, we think, a worthwhile explanation for that quote, with the TCW episode using the quote as the title. The example given in it being a senator/representative from each side wishing to come together, draw up a ceasefire and begin negotiations. Its the first and last time we see an indication of any positive deed from the CIS.
Oh and a minor point, Sidious didn't disfigure himself, he unmasked himself. For years actually carefully using makeup and other methods (Obi wan was seen having his whole face altered with a serum in TCW to look like Hardeen, so anything is possible now in this regard) to hide his true, degraded, decayed form from the public.. You see, you don't get rotting fingernails, sunken eyes, grey skin, rotted teeth- from lightning and the burning damage that entails.
the heroes on both sides is accurate and relevant... you have to remember that the crux of Star Wars is "point of view" and from the separatists POV there ARE heroes on their side... remember that at large the separatists aren't some cackling enemy camp, they had legitimate beef with the corruption of the republic and wanted real change, they had their own senate and governance and elected leaders, the fact that they were created and manipulated by the Sith is irrelevant through the lens that the majority of the people comprising the confederacy were just regular people that wanted better for their planets and families.

We literally just see a cackling camp, that wants Amidala's head, that sentenced three republic members to death by exotic monsters without a fair trial, and created a secret mass army of battle droids and illegal wmd's. No use reciting what you know now 10-20 years later, i know they tried to fix it, i even cited the example but its not as simple as there just being "points of view".
Gg is described as "fiendish".. in ep4 the empire is described as "evil", their agents are "sinister". in ep5 Vader is described as "evil".
Throughout, the rebels are described as "brave", "struggling to restore freedom to the galaxy", referred to as "freedom fighters".
One side always knew it was evil, one side knew it was good, there were no heroes on both sides, just one side. So let's be clear, my argument was there was no precedent for the crawl to be so neutral as to suggest that both sides are the same in their struggle and in the same breath call one side's leaders "fiendish" and "ruthless". That's called not being clear and concise with the english language.

That the Difference between StarWars Fans and GoT Fans because if Palpatine/Lord Sidious was within George R.R. Martin ASOIAF/GoT Story, then he would be hands down Greatest Character playing the Game Of Thrones period, not dislike because majority doesn't like or can follow the Politics.
But the reality is GoT Book Readers Fans are way more Loyal and Smarter than StarWars Fans who call Disney B.S Canon over George Lucas Work. That could never happen for HBO/WB with GoT Fans saying their story is Canon over George R.R. Martin.
Also Qui Gon Jinn was another Fake Jedi just like Dooku, Syfo Diaz and Anakin who doom the Jedi because they didn't believe within the Jedi Code like True Jedi Knights in Yoda, Mace Windu and Obi-Wan believe in that totally destroyed the Sith on the break of Extinction.
