Johnny got the role because of his epic acting skills. Of course, his relationship with Tim burton will have some effect on the fact that johnny is the main character in this. This is only because Tim knows how johnny works and vice versa, they work very well together. It's undoubtable that any Burton/Depp film will be awesome

the thing about the role of Sweeney tho is that it was written for a man who doesn't have to be a good singer, to say George Hearn is an amazing singer as Sweeney is far from truth, but he is great in the role because that IS the role, sure Sweeney is a large singing role, but he is also demented, and thus the part was never meant to sound amazing, and tbh altho depp of course doesn't blow u away, who would've expected he could sing at all? pretty good for a first timer

That was the biggest pet peeve I had when they did Phantom of the Opera with Emmy and Gerard. They sounded great, but there were too many secondary characters singing and too many chorus pieces. xD Tim struck a much better balance by keeping the main characters.
