  • The treasury edition's size is the perfect way to showcase Peach Momoko's exceptional linework and makes for a fun spin on traditional Marvel characters!
While the stories aren't going to necessarily blow your mind, they're competently told and engaging despite their short nature.
Plus if you like this there's a sequel coming up that's going to be redoing the Marvel Civil War storyline in a similar style!, so something to keep your eyes on!

Picked up "Demon Wars, Iron Samurai" at my local comic shop on a whim because I dug the cover...now I'm hoping to get my hands on this book to see what all the previous stories/art in the series were all about.

No, but now I'm going to have to go find it, aren't I? I'm waiting for the Treasury Edition of her Demon Wars book, but it's not out until the end of October!

Peach is not manga lol Manga has a style that has nothing to do with what Peach is doing in Demon Days. Demon Days is an american comic book dealing with Japanese cultural subject matters... case in point, sushi is not manga... kimonos are not manga. Just educating the mass ignorance of what Manga actually is.

Sushi? Kimono? Not knowing what manga is?
Kind of a strange comment to make. Have you seen some of the other book videos I've posted? My old school nerd cred feels threatened!
After a few decades of manga consumption, at first in English and then in Japanese, I'm feeling pretty confident in identifying what manga looks like. Last I checked, manga are comics made in Japan. Peach is Japanese. She wrote the stories while living in Japan, in Japanese.
So I'd definitely argue Peach has a manga influence to her style. Heck, I'd even argue it's not actually an American comic book. The inside cover lists Peach as the author, with an English adaptation and dialogue provided by an entirely different person. Why would an American comic need an English adaptation? Because it was a Japanese comic, or as they say there... manga.
Her pages "read" like manga. The pacing from panel to panel, how much time passes between each action, the angles and perspective used in certain scenes, the layout of exposition on the page... it's manga dude.
Is it because it was an American book sold in floppy format? Some of us are old enough to remember buying floppies of manga that were brought to the states back in the day. None of these fancy graphic novel collections!
And on top of that, I went and showed this book to family members and friends that are native Japanese and all were in agreement it looked like manga. Although my wife did wonder at first if it was Chinese based on the painted artwork, which was pretty prevalent in the HK comics of the 80s and 90s, but that's a story for another day I guess.

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature it's an East Asian art style she reps not Manga. It's a totally Western view to classify anything from Japan that can't be defined by American comicbook standards to view it as such. That is the the issue I had with your perspective. It is NOT manga. Name one manga artist that uses the medium Peach uses. She's obviously Japanese, duh. That doesn't mean her art is Manga style. Do you get that? A comment like that diminishes her work and puts her in a box. Your credibility is being threatened if you can't recognize that basic fact. Jim Lee doing an American style art book in Japan would be technically Manga. Is it Manga style? No. Neither is Peach though. Nothing about her art is Manga. And your friends saying so doesn't make it so either. When she does CHIBI style, that is is Manga. But Chibi style is absolutely absent from Demon Days. Can she do Manga style. I'm sure she could. But she went out of her way not to. If you can't see that, don't claim to be an authority on comic books, comic art, or anything else.

      I appreciate the discussion.
I'm not sure what medium Peach is using that other comic artists aren't using though. Primarily covers? Comics with a manga influence done with an international audience in mind? Artists like Takashi Okazaki, Kia Asamiya, and Katsuya Terada immediately spring to my mind. I'm sure if we dig through old copies of Heavy Metal we could stumble across some more too.
Also- what defines manga style? Kazutoshi Soyama's Dangerous Ji-san would be just as much considered manga as would the likes of anything by Naoki Urasawa. It's just different styles of art (and audience, and quality), but both would be considered comic artists.
If Peach said she went out of her way to create the series in a non- manga style, I'd love to read an interview about that.
Of course my friends and family saying it looks like manga doesn't make it manga, but my point is that when an average non- comic reading Japanese person is saying it looks like manga to them, there's certain things on the page that would make them say that. I'm arguing it's the structure of the page more than the actual linework. Plenty of artists can play in that "style," but not all artists can get the pacing and rhythm.
Next time they come over though I'll see if I can get a bit more in depth observation from them.
And can we throw the wildcard that is French manga into the equation? What about books like Radian/ Radiant that are made in France but published in Japan?
Rest assured I'll be back arguing the same thing when Marvel puts out Demon Wars in that big treasury edition!
I also just saw that Viz put out a book recently called "Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute" with the Amazon blurb even calling Peach out! :P
