This video is one I’ve wanted to make for over two years now. It’s whole purpose is to thank you, the Saturn Community. The friendships I’ve made, the things I’ve learned, and many of the joys I’ve felt over these last three years, are in many parts thanks to you. Never forget, that we are the reason these machines are remembered, and never forget the joy they have given so many of us. Here’s to 25 years of Sega Saturn greatness in the West, and the community that keeps that fire alive!

[ Coury ] this was fantastic! In fact I do remember walking into Electronics Boutique that day 25 years ago to see the people who worked there having set up a demo unit with Panzer Dragoon on it, while being just as shocked that I was that the system was out. Of course I wasn’t prepared for it, so I didn’t have the money to buy a system. But I definitely remember the time and place 25 years ago. Funny how certain things stay with us.

Beautiful video my friend. I think I've mentioned this to you before, but I was anticipating the Saturn's launch and then it never hit store shelves. All these years later, we know why. It's crazy, but I never saw it for sale. The Dreamcast? Got it day one, but the Saturn was like a ghost only proven to be real when I got my hands on one years after it's market run ended. It makes me excited to go back and experience this segment of gaming a cared deeply for but had no access. Funny thing is, decades removed, the Saturn hardware has aged much better than the PSX and N64. It just executed that timeless look better than the other hardware of that era.

We're in the year 2020. Emulation for the Sega Saturn has never been better and so is the understanding of its architecture. There are brilliant minds everywhere we look and reaching them was never easier than it is today. We should start a patreon project and gather the most innovative, experienced and creative minds and get them to make a new game for the Sega Saturn. Like a never to be released game like RE2 or a whole new game like a new RPG. Or, a port of an awesome Sonic fan game with Saturn-era graphics like Sonic Robo Blast 2! That would be AWESOME! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

25 years ago, I was 9 years old. I was a bit late to the 16 bit party and just got my SNES for Xmas the year before. I saw preview videos for the Saturn and was pretty floored. Shortly after the Saturn launched in the US, I got to play Virtua Fighter at a kiosk at my local Circuit City and I remember wanting one badly. I wouldn't get one until 2012 and it's a system that deserves to be looked upon fondly.

I was 9 in 1995, too, and also late to the 16-bit party. But I had a Genesis instead. My old Model 2 unit died on me a long time ago and I don't have it anymore. I since picked up a Model 1 and a 32X. I now have more games for the Genesis/32X combo than on any other console, second only to the PS1. I wanted a Saturn BADLY as a kid and didn't own one until three years ago. Bought mine at a flea market. I only have six games on the Saturn right now, and three of those were loose discs.
I'd love to see someone release a FPGA clone of the Saturn. Sega's patent has expired so it's fair game now.

    • @madhatter8508
      @madhatter8508 4 роки тому +1

@@DarDarBinks1986 It's too complicated for an FPGA. Only recently was an FPGA released that could replicate a Neo Geo. It'll probably be 5-10 years before there's a consumer level FPGA that can replicate a Saturn. An alternative to that would be to salvage chips from old, no longer working Saturns and print a new PCB much smaller than the old one. The Saturn's 68K and Yamaha soundchip could be replicated on a cheap FPGA.
What I'd love to see would be some homebrew add-ons for the 3D controller. Sega made it to be expandable with memory cards, a rumble pack, a small screen, and some other ideas in patents they filed, but they didn't end up doing any of that with the Saturn. It would be cool to see indie games on the Saturn making use of rumble and/or VMU features, or old games modded to support the rumble pack.

I had wanted a Saturn unlike any system before or especially since. There's a specific gut feeling I can still remember how it felt whenever I thought about that system, hard to describe. I've never been so hyped and it's untimely death killed that level of wonder for me for every console post Saturn. I've loved many consoles since, but ... man.. just not the same. Just remember the logo feeling so futuristic, the name, god the arcade games like Dayona in my home. By the time I had the money, it was dead. I settled for an N64, got a PSone with screen near it's death, and each gen since has felt less impressive than the last. Now I have a Switch, a computer, and an Oculus Quest, the latter of which is the only thing that's given me an honest bump up in enjoyment in a long time. I think VR is the only thing that makes this now "bigger than hollywood" corporate machine worth investing in, largely. I miss the days of Saturn. It'll never be the same.

It was awesome and I still remember the feeling of opening that and how awesome it was. And then the provided connectors didnt work with my TV so we had to go to the store and get an rf adapted and finally I could play using my shitty rd signal but I difnt care and didnt even k how it was bad at the time. It was just what we used lol I did the same with my super nintendo.

The Saturn was my first 32-bit console, and I have fond memories of playing Sega Rally and Sonic 3D Blast. After Bernie Stolar publicly dumped on the Saturn, my uncle sold it and got us a PlayStation, which I also enjoyed playing, but I went right back to Sega with the Dreamcast. After playing my Dreamcast for 21 years, I just ordered a mod chipped Saturn from eBay a couple days ago. I'm working on my own homebrew Oregon Trail in BASIC on the Genesis, and I want to port it to the Saturn too. In the meantime, I've got a ton of games to catch up on.

First of all Mr. SSG, you got yourself a new subscriber. Now that I got that outta the way, I’d like to say I was 11 in May of 1995 (born 2/18/84) and I was still playing my Sega Genesis. I’m an avid Sega fan much like yourself, and I wasn’t really able to get my Sega Saturn until a whole year later. June of 1996 I graduated from elementary school, and to my surprise there was a Sega Saturn in my room already hooked up to my TV READY to play. 4 games were surrounding my Saturn they were, Street Fighter Alpha, Virtua Fighter Remix, X-Men Cota, and Virtua Fighter 2. It was such a joyous occasion, and a very happy time in my life. Graduating from elementary school, and getting my Saturn FINALLY, that I was supposed to get in Christmas of 1995. This video gave me a very nostalgic feeling, and I commend you for making it for all the other avid Sega lovers like you. THANK YOU BROTHER, THANK YOU!!!!

Sega Dreams yes sir, it was a nice treat and I’m still an avid fighting game player. I had a total of 24 games on my genesis, but my dad was intuitive enough to realize that I mostly played Fatal Fury 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 the most. He and my mom made a valiant effort in the regard to make sure my first couple of games were fighters on the successor that was Sega Saturn. I actually got my genesis in Christmas of 1992 when I was 8, and for 4 years that was the only system I had that was actually mine. My dad owned the Nintendo, but he only had 5 games on it, he never got the Super Nintendo though. Any way I digress, I was so happy that Virtua Fighter 2 was one of my first games even though it was clearly an inferior port. The Arcade version was the thee 3D game that made me fall in love with 3D games. I was so astonished at how fluid, and visually appealing that game was for a 1994 (I was 10 at the time) arcade game, definitely ahead of it's time. I will always love Sega, for them Capcom, and SNK are my favorite gaming companies.

I got a Sega Saturn for Christmas in 1996. I was 9 years old. Growing up, I did not know a single person who owned a Saturn. I loved the Saturn and still do, but back then, I was pretty pissed. Everyone was talking about either PlayStation or Nintendo 64. I was especially jealous of the latter, though I would eventually get one in Christmas of 1999. By 1998, many game stores in my area stopped selling Saturn games, consoles and accessories.
In retrospect, though, it was worth growing up with the Saturn. I got to experience many underrated gems. I was pissed that my controller died and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere at the time, so I had no choice but to give the whole console away.
And really, I didn't miss out on the PlayStation since the PS2 and PS3 would be backwards compatible, so I had plenty of time to catch up.

25 years ago I was a 10 year old school kid. Yep I feel old now. The Saturn is indeed among the most underrated consoles in the world just as the Dreamcast. I did not get into gaming on the Saturn until 2018 but I am big Saturn fan now. It is really a pity that i did not gave the Saturn a chance back then wen it was relevant. I knew about the Saturn back then of course but I was young and dumb started to trusted gaming magazines too much. Here in Austria I could only get hold of the German mags and they did not write very favorable about the 32 bit sega console. So I went with the N64 and from 1998 on-wards with the Playstation. A very unfortunate decision in retro perspective But since 2018 I am really enjoying the Saturn and it's games. There are so many games I still need to experience.

The games, the style, the music, and everything that other systems just could not provide. Much like the TG16 community, The Saturn community feels more like family than just a community. While other communities are divisive and exclusive, the Saturn community is welcoming and understanding. Thanks for making this, its like a rallying cry for anybody that truly liked the Saturn. To this day it's still my favorite console because of all the great arcade ports and Sega exclusives, Saturn games have a unique feel and identity to them...that's something that's been lost over time has gaming as continued to evolve, each console and it's library maintaining a mostly unique identity. This along with the PlayStation were integral to forming my gaming sensibilities and my early teenage years in general growing up. While I'm glad more people have come around on the Saturn, as a collector (With intent to play) it hurts to see games inflate so much, lol.

I couldn't believe that it was 25 years from yesterday....5-11-1995, that the Sega Saturn had come out. I knew you wouldn't let us down and would have a video ready. I too have started to play through and document my library. I went through 2 years of driving around the state of New York visiting stores to look for Saturn games. I found some duds, and I found some gems. Ebay also became my best friend as I purchased games in bundles and then resold the ones that I did not want to help fuel the need for more and more games.

Just barely started playing my Sega Saturn. I purchased my console back in 2005, but never had a chance to play it, due to not having a very good controller. But now that I have good working controllers, I barely started playing it, and I'm really loving it. I finally got to play Resident Evil on the Saturn, and very much enjoyed it. I agree with you SSG, I would've loved playing Resident Evil 2 on the Sega Saturn 2 as well.

I was late to the 16-bit party as a kid, starting out with a Sega Genesis. A year later (Christmas '96), I would receive a Nintendo 64. The year after that, a PS1. I didn't have a Saturn when it was new, but I do have one now. Scored mine at a flea market along with a few games and a GameShark. My library consists of only six games at the moment: Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter Remix, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Ten Pin Alley, and Shellshock. I'd love to score Fighters Megamix and Sonic Jam down the road, though. Some might call my Saturn library small. I call it curative--games that I know I'll play. For me, it was Sega first and Nintendo second, but both over Sony.
As far as the fifth-gen console war goes, both Sega AND Nintendo shot themselves in the foot. Sega did it by trying to stretch the life of the Genesis with that goddamn 32X and making the Saturn hard to program for. Nintendo did it by clinging to cartridges in an era of optical discs. The PS1 is a console that I have a love-hate relationship with. I love the games but hate how Sony came along and fucked things up for both Nintendo and Sega.
Bernie Stolar was wrong: The Saturn was our future! It can still be our future! Sega's patent on the hardware has expired so it's high time we got a FPGA clone. If I'm going to play Saturn games on after-market hardware, I'd rather use a recreation of the original hardware than a glorified emulator.

Although I'm a 1996'er (born well over a year after its US launch), I got my Saturn for Christmas nearly 10 years ago and it has been absolutely loved of fighters and other arcade greatness. My 3 games I got with it were Daytona, Street Fighter Alpha, and Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter, plus some unfortunately-trash 4MB cart that was not Action Replay. Eventually I did get an Action Replay cart, and the true journey began for import playing.
Even just components of the Saturn, like the SCSP chip used for sounds & most music produced by the console, and various arcade hardware (Model 3, ST-V, etc), have put a hard impact on lives like mine, working with samples produced by the chip. I run Pseudo-Saturn on a Model 2 console, and while I lost a couple screws for the sucker after attempting to install, it's forever used and loved. The Saturn INDEED was our future. ;)

25 years ago I was 7. And I was enjoying the PlayStation and eventually the N64. I had no idea the Sega Saturn existed. And it wasn't until after the Dreamcast that I knew it was a thing. In 2016 with the knowledge of pseudo Saturn I finally ventured into the Sega Saturn and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The Sega Saturn has become my favorite console of all time. If it wasn't for the childhood memories of playing Mario Golf with my dad I would have gladly take a Sega Saturn over the n64. GoldenEye and Pokemon Snap or amazing games but the vast wealth of titles on the Sega Saturn that appealed to me were so much more. At least now I can truly appreciate it. Growing up we had every Nintendo console except for the Wii U, now all I own is the Nintendo switch and the original Wii fully hacked... But I have all the Sega consoles now. :) great video man!!!

I don’t think it was released in my region though (Norway), and if it was I never saw it or anything referring to it outside those ads - which was likely some foreign magazine. 25 years ago, I was 15. The Genesis vs SNES was a popular topic with all my friends and I. We all basically acknowledged that both systems were great and both had their pros and cons. We would regular have tournaments at our houses. We would mostly play EA NHL Hockey and Mortal Kombat 2. Those days were great. I never did buy a Saturn though. I was one of those Sega fans that Sega burned with the 32x and when I saw that none of the game franchises that I loved from Genesis weren't coming to Saturn, I simply gave in and bought a Playstation. Although, my friends and I all loved the Playstation and pretty much disliked the N64(except Goldeneye, Zelda & Mario), a lot of us felt that Sega should have been what Playstation became during that era. I'm glad to see that Sega still gets love to this day. Peace :)
