    Amazing content, truly one of a kind source of very specyfic topics of hand plane restoration on UA-cam. Got my hands on very rusty and old Millers Falls no14 and just popped the very bent and loose lever off five minutes ago! Thanks to your detailed, step by step instructions I mustered up some courage and gave that thing a few gentle whacks. Thank you and sending love from Poland!

    When you have a great tool with one flaw---a tiny, persnickety flaw at that---good advice can be hard to come by. You, sir, have a way of focusing in on the issue, diagnosing the problem with superb close-ups to boot, and approaching the solution with the spirit of a surgeon's precision. Masterful! Now if I can just find my set of punches...Many thanks!

    Hello, Mr. Bradfield;
    EXCELLENT!
    Great video, I think you may be an 'artist' mechanic.
    I have a type 16 #4, ogfcourse it is not a 'collectable'.
    The lateral is held by a rivet which moves in the frog.
    It is loose, if you turn the plane on its side the lateral falls down.
    If I take the frog off again I'll use a center punch & tap it on my anvil to try to tighten it a bit.
    Thank you for all you do.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
    PS
    I almost laughed out loud at your wig!

    I really enjoy the "how to" videos Keith. I've watched a lot of plane restoration videos from other sources and recommended your channel to folks that don't seem to be able to get things working correctly.

    Well done.I actually have made latteral adjusters from scratch.Intricate some what but I found it quite easy.I am currently building a N• 1 size plane and its very hard because every thing is so small

    Such a good an informative video! Ten thumbs up!
    I don't like videos where the presenter talks a lot...just for the sake of talking. Or videos with all kinds of elevator music.
    So it is extremely refreshing to watch your videos sir, as I find them to be to the point with no excess stuff - just the right amount of the good stuff! Thank you!

    So greatful I watched this , I was wondering if the wheel on the lever was supposed to be tight . Mine is and I thought it was a problem . Glad it's supposed to be tight.👍

    Home run, sir! I've got a type 15 no 4 that still has some of the orange paint on the frog, but was missing the lateral. Time to break out the armorers kit and get my punches out. I appreciate the tutorial!

    Thanks for this one - the lateral has always seemed like the weakest point of the plane to me. I have some that move easily, others that are fairly stiff. This video will help me diagnose my problems and fix them..

    Some great tips thanks! I already have a couple a decent planes, two Stanley no 4s and a Record 5 1/2. I've just taken delivery of another old Stanley no 4 which I'm trying to restore for my brother. Most of the parts are good, but unfortunately, the lateral adjuster has a major flaw. The metal seems to be too thick for the frog and the front face of the lateral stands slightly proud of the face of the frog preventing the blade from seating correctly. Also the lateral adjuster catches on the back of the blade when trying to adjust to either side. Were the lateral adjusters made in different thicknesses ? I'm assuming someone has replaced it with a new one which is too thick for the frog. Is this a common problem ?

      It worked, the lateral is firm with not slop. Cracked the frog when the punch slipped off the side of the pin.

    Brilliant work Keith and Fantastic tips :) I have a Type 11 No.4 that was given to me and it came without a lateral lever. I now live in a country were it is impossible to find a Stanley plane never mind a replacement lateral, but I am able to make something close enough to work until I finally find one. Can you please help in the overall dimensions of the lateral for this plane? and thank you as ever for your efforts in sharing your knowledge and showing us how to do these things properly :) Blessings ॐ

    Just tried this on an old Record plane that needed work on the frog face. The lateral adjust lever just snapped off! Turns out they hammered the pin out like a rivet to stop it coming off!

  • @tonylenge424

    Very worthwhile as usual. If a pin will not budge when trying to remove it, do you then use a torch?

    Where do you get a new washer for the lateral if it gets lost? Bought one a while back and didn't realize the lateral was missing the washer.

    • @c.lafont931
      @c.lafont931 2 роки тому

      You might make one, using a mending plate or similar piece of mild steel of the right thickness. Drill a center hole, then cut the disc out of the plate, file it around to the right diameter, and pin it onto the lever. I messed up a disc when flattening the surface of a frog, ended up wearing off the sides of the disc. This is how I’m gonna try and replace it. Good luck!
