- This Mykola Leontovych composition Shchedryk (aka Carol of the Bells) was originally written for 3 part vocal harmony. This song gained worldwide popularity in 1922 after the Ukrainian National Chorus (under the direction of composer Oleksander Koshets) sang this in Carnegie Hall, where Peter Willhousky heard it and published it with the english text. BTW - the English text is not a translation of the original Ukrainian. This is a recording made in New York City in October of 1922 on the Brunswick label. It's actually on the B side...
Amazing how this became "Carol of the Bells" I went down a rabbit hole to find this. Simply amazing.
This choir sang this exact song 101 years ago at Carnegie Hall in NYC - where Peter Wilhousky was in the audience. He came up with the English words since “my choir would not be able to sing in Ukrainian” - and the rest is history!
I'm sorry for wats happening in yr country

I don't care what language I listen to this piece in (or if it's instrumental), or what artist's version I hear. This piece is like magic to me.
This is the original version and the first known recording of it!

Ukrainian language.
Wow this is amazing. In 2022 Shchedryk was preformed again in Carnegie Hall, and I have the pleasure of hearing it live sung in Kyiv this week as well. =)

This weekend we celebrated the Centennial of Carol of the Bells in Carnegie Hall. This chorus performed there 100 years ago and Peter Wilhousky was in the audience and penned the English lyrics. #CaroloftheBells100
Koshets choir is a legend! Nice to have this record.
It's a great way to preserve a legendary song of ukraine, thanks for sharing
Thank you for posting this clip with the pictures -- I actually knew (quite well) one of the woman singers, Sofia Haievska Bezruchko, mama of Oksana Ross from Denver (now in Massachussetts). Pani Sofia also knew Leontovich at the time he composed this Schedryk before KGB murdered him.
+NaveDeLaMusica What Koshetz did for Ukraine is unparalleled! Seems like there is a legend out there that Gershwin's "Summertime: was inspired by a Kozhetz Metropolitan performance of "Oy Khodyt' Son", a Ukrainian ballad.
+ *FelizNM* The story about Gershwin is true. Oy Khodyt Son was my favorite lullaby when little; my baba sang it to me every night and the first time I was made to play "Summertime" by my piano teacher, I thought, hey, this sounds familiar . . .
@@tamcon72 great! Thank you for posting confirmation! Slava Ukraini! Where are you? I'm in Denver.
Mrs. Oksana Ross passed away 2 years ago peacefully near her son, Victor and his family!
It wasn't the KGB (which existed from 1954-1991) but the Cheka, the first Soviet secret police agency (1918-1922). Though I guess their functions were similar.
Леонтович мелодiю не створив, вона народня, a вiн її генiяльно обробив на хоровий твiр.
Great song!
Super!)

Slava Ukraini
This is an ancient Ukrainian New Year prosperity song. Leontyvych added a melody, but did not write the words. This is pre-Christian, our ancient culture.
I can feel it protects Ukrainians. Partic right now. Slava Ukraini.
Leontovych did not even “add a melody” - but he composed the 4 part harmony version we hear everywhere. Yes - it is a pre-Christian themed song of good cheer most likely for the Winter Solstice or the New Year. It later morphed into a song of Epiphany as all the other Schedrivky were.
@@Bandurystfortunately, because of translation, I’m learning a lot by reading the comments. I typed a comment to you and then looked at your profile! I lived in Detroit, my parents were born there. My daughter plays the violin, viola, and piano. She got accepted, with a scholarship to Cleveland School of Music, but it didn’t cover room and board so she went to the University of Miami instead. Below is my original comment:
Pertaining to the pagan cultures of the past, I remember reading the historical recount about the “Tree of Thor” & St. Benedict. Basically, all people will eventually, worship the One who created nature, rather than worshipping nature itself. These days it seems to be the opposite but that’s just because the unbelievers are louder. I am a SSPX Catholic, I have a Jewish friend who emigrated from Ukraine, years ago. We are so different yet we still have so much in common! I think our love of Truth is the key. I was in a choir that sang this song but never knew the history. Fascinating! Thank you! ❤
Interesting! I actually grew up in Cleveland and went to school there. I attended CWRU and was a music minor - where I took voice at the Cleveland Institute of Music two of those years. After finishing dental school there I moved to Detroit. Small world!
Great! Thanks!
Cool! A priceless piece of history.
Верикiвський , Я.
Ukrainian author of the song «CAROL OF THE BELLS» Mykola Leontovych was vilely killed by a Russian KGBeast in 1921.
24.02.2022 russian forces invaded the homeland of the internationally admired composer.
I appeal to the people of the civilized democratic world. Stop Putin’s Russia, so that brilliant Ukrainian composers, artists, and many wonderful and noble people could still be born!!!🇺🇦
This song is still amazing today
Written in 2013 by Mykola Leontovych - the conductor of the Ukrainian National Chorus knew the composer and knew how it was to be performed. This is the first ever recording from 1922 when the Chorus came to the USA and recorded their whole repertoire. They performed at Carnegie hall to rave rebviews - where in attendance was Peter Wilhousky who penned the English words because “my students will never be able to sing this in Ukrainian”. And the rest is history!!
1913 (not 2013). I hate autocorrect…
Ukrainan culture is amazing ❤️
Truly amazing
Hmmm. My late father MIGHT have been in that photo from Berlin. He was certainly there at the time.
Was he in the Ukrainian National Chorus directed by Koshetz (1918-1922)?
@@Banduryst I dont know. He passed away more than 50 years ago now. He was in Berlin at the time, and he was always involved in Uke stuff and music.
