  • This video is to help instrument students and pilots become more fluent with copying IFR clearances.
    Suggested use:
    1) When clearance templated ("CRAFT") is first displayed along with origin, destination, and suggested route, pause and look at the route and airport procedures.
    2) Write down the clearance you would expect in your own clearance template
    3) Resume video and listen to the clearance, updating your template along the way
    4) Pause when the "answer" is displayed and check it against what you wrote
    5) Practice entering the clearance into your EFB or G1000 simulator
    6) Resume video to see the "answer" entered in ForeFlight

Super helpful - working on my instrument and need practice copying clearances. Thanks for putting these up. +1000 the KSQL classic diamond shaped waterway dep. As an aside, I came across an old letter to airmen regarding that mouthful where they say “Pilots who are familiar with the procedure or those that do not have any questions about the procedure may refrain from a verbatim read back.” So, apparently you can just say wilco vfr to ifr procedure. Untested for now, however.

I have seen that LTA, but every time I try to not read back the full clearance they make me read it all back...

Do they not tell you the spelling for the fixes because you’re a local or do they actually just leave it out? I can’t imagine trying to figure out how to shorthand Salinas if I didn’t know it was SNS

they will tell you if you ask, but I think there's an expectation you've done your homework by looking at charts, getting your expected / common clearance from Foreflight, etc.
