- On this episode of The Downshift, we take a first look at the upcoming 2015 Corvette Z06 and talk to the people responsible for bringing it to life. With its new 625hp 6.2 liter supercharged engine and aero package developed from their racing program, the Z06 trumped the famed ZR1's lap times. This is the fastest Corvette ever produced.

What a gorgeous car, I'm glad the Corvette keeps getting better looking.
Truly a shame so many people hate this cars ass end. Because with numbers like this, it's likely that, that's all you're going to be seeing.
its not a shame. just like the gtr, the vette round tail lights is an iconic for the car. although the changes to the tail lamb is not bad. i like it very much.
The point was that although a lot of people don't like it, with the cars speed and capability, they will be seeing a lot of the ass end, therefore, rendering it "A shame".

This car is the result of perfection from the practice of the prior Corvettes.
I'm a GTR guy. But that z06 looks INSANELY handsome. But the GTR will always look good in my eyes.

I reckon the Ferrari F12 might have more BHP but Corvette's are notorious for trumping higher powered cars in terms of lap times and also Corvette's are killer in the Le Mans GT1 class.

$78,995 base price is going to be astonishing for this car. Considering the C6 ZR1 started at like $113,000 and this is faster and more powerful.

I've been a Corvette aficionado since the first time I saw the first 'Vette at a GM employees preview of it before it was released to the public in '53. I was artistic by nature, so the beauty of the 'Vette always pulled me in, and I watched the styling change through the years since I was a child. I also got very interested in what it took to make it a sports car. Now, as a retired engineer, I see the beauty of its technology too.
My all-time favorite 'Vette was the '65 Sting Ray because it brought some of the best technology of the time together with crisp, dramatic, innovative styling. Now, this Z06 is at least equal to that '65 Sting Ray because it clearly follows the traditions of 'Vette style while improving the whole notion with technology & art advancing together. The Z06 looks like a Corvette! The styling is very balanced, only allowing for interruptions where air-flow management trumps beauty; but still, this Z06 is beautiful all-around! It clearly reminds me of its 'Vetteness' from every angle, and it's nicely executed! Clean!

Congratulations for the corvette team. The Z06 looks amazing and I am sure it is going to drive like a dream. I am also very happy for keeping the name for its heritage. However, I have two questions.
1) Is the Z06 lighter than the stingray?
2) What are the differences between the LT1 and the LT4 other than the supercharger?

I've never really been a big fan of the previous Corvettes but this one looks amazing. It finally has the striking looks to match the performance. I can't wait to see a test drive.

This car is one of only a handful which actually made my heart skip a beat from certain camera angles. Looks amazing and so unassuming. I hope we get a few over here in the UK.

The Corvette engines are world class engines. Reliable, powerful, cheap to maintain, and very refined to boot.
And if Porsche tried to build this car it would be $300,000. Well done Corvette team!

This car has a mind blowing performance data and video recorder integrated in the windshield. Here's a copy and paste from their website:
Record, share and analyze your driving experiences on and off the track with the available industry-exclusive Performance Data Recorder. Add an extra dimension to your drive by logging video of your drives, along with real-time performance data, onto an SD memory card stored in the glove box. Four modes - Track, Sport, Touring and Performance - allow you to capture video, audio, driving stats, date and time, and a lot more. Data is captured using a seamlessly integrated, windshield-mounted HD camera module, as well as a performance processor, internal accelerometers and GPS system. Then play your video back on a computer, or relive your drive right inside the Z06 on the 8-inch diagonal color HD screen. You can even analyze your driving technique using included software that is similar to the analysis software used by Corvette Racing.
Dammm. For the money, this car is the real deal.

The GT500 is only good for straight lines. And the GT500's torque is not even close to the Z06's. 556 Ib ft vs 650 Ib ft? Not to mention, it's piss poor traction and brakes. Yeah. That My Little Brony with a snake badge wouldn't stand a chance against the Z06. It's not all about horsepower you know, only kids and people who don't know a single thing about cars thinks that horsepower is the say all be all trump card... Don't know why you Mustang fanatics continue to try to convince yourselves and other people, that the Mustang can surpass the Corvette. The cars are in two completely different leagues. Super car vs pumped up pony car... No match...
And before you try to bring up the GT, let me remind you that the new Z06 destroys it, the old Z06 can run with it, and to put the cherry on top, it's cheaper...

krocialblack Not to mention the ticking timebomb that is the '13+ GT500, what with its failed 1980's technology (cylinder nanocoating). They tout the engine as their "all-new 5.8L" when it's no more than a desleeved 5.4L, waiting to detonate from a lack of structural integrity and strength.
That is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.

How many years did it actually take for the GTR to actually become competitive with the ZO6 when it day viewed in 2006? The GTR was getting its ass kicked left and right for years and GM didn't even change it's hp output on the ZO6 then the ZR-1 came along which continues to kick the GTRs ass stock from the factory. That's why motor trend won't even put the base GTR against the ZR1 because the Corvette would destroy it.

They're not "dead". Your post was 6 months ago and the new Camaro Z28 has an LS engine, the SS Sedan has and will continue to have an LS engine.
It's kind of common sense really that GM would milk the LSX platform for quite some time.

I think the 2014 Z06 will be a GTR Nismo killer.
The Z28 Camaro managed to beat the GTR track edition.
the Z06 is lighter, has more horsepower, and has an INSANE amount of down force.
& is already faster than the old Zr1 1 year before release.
altimgamr Yeah the Z06 is definitely a Nismo GTR killer, especially when its equipped with its fast shifting 8-speed paddle gearbox and its Z07 package.

Honestly, no matter how legally track-oriented they make the Z28, I don't see how it will top a modern GTR.
idk, the GTR's launch is what gives it its edge.... It will be cool to see these two go head-to-head. There are some exciting cars coming out these next couple years like the NSX and Supera/FT-1... seeing all these going against each other will be amazing.
I dont know how i feel about this supercharger. The car looks great, but I wish they would have kept it naturally aspirated.
A N/A engine that makes that kind of power will have to be bigger, which will add more weight. The force induction route is the best.
***** that's not necessarily true. You can increase the power on an engine without making it bigger. What if Chevrolet could squeeze out 100hp/L in a naturally aspirated engine? That wouldn't make it any bigger, and if it did, it would be marginally heavier. Besides, a screaming V8 that revs to 7500 excites me, and im sure many others, a whole lot more than a supercharged one. And to say forced induction route is best... thats not necessarily true. Best in what way? More efficient? Yes. Less exciting? Probably. Besides, everyone is moving toward forced induction these days, and I had hoped Chevy would at least keep their Z06 naturally aspirated.
Michael B Ferrari doesn't use forced induction. Also, forced induction isn't really more fuel efficient.

If Ferrari can make a DCT that can handle 730 bhp, GM sure can do that. I can understand the weight aspect of it. And the claims of the GM auto faster than Porsche DCT seems to be impressive...and interesting. Have to see a comparison between the Trans.

GTR killing machine/platform?
Well it doesn't matter since GTR is a 4 seater, has boot and is usable in every weather condition while this thing is only gonna be fast in pefect conditons.

Nicholas Wigchert if GT-R is completely different car then why would you even mention it? Fact is that GT-R is faster for sure in any other than "dry middle in the desert track" condition. Against previous vette GT-R was faster in dry track also. You ask how many GT-R owners drive in those conditions - hello- all the parts in northren/eastern Europe or Russia wheres proper 4 seasons. Theres 3 local guys I know personally who drive their GT-R' s whole year long.
Yeah the price is cheap but why wouldn't it be if the chevy is owned by goverment who throws billions at company to keep it atfloat for national pride sake. They can afford to spend 150k on making and sell it for 100k to promote domestic sales.

Dear GM, please make an option to purchase directly from you like Tesla. I am sick of the car dealers marking your cars up 10-20k above the sticker, making a car that is affordable for the performance out of reach for the buying public that will actually buy these cars, and just plain pissing me off. I stopped by the Chevy Dealer here in NV and a $60k ZL1 was $80k when it should have been $52-56k! If the dealers would stop raping people and just sell American cars then you would actually sell more cars! The average person can't afford the cost of paying for 2 cars and getting one, and if your credit is not spot on the bank would be stupid to loan money on addendum pricing! The only people that win are the dealers!

Surprisingly. People are taking the news, quite well.
Top of the line will be the ZR-1 when it comes out not this Z06 but top of the line for now. I don't think it's DCT though but I'm sure you'll be able to get the manual still.
They say it will shift quicker than Porsche PDK which is impressive if it really shifts that fast and smooth. The PDK shaved off more than half a second to 60 in the Carrera S versus manual porsche so it has it's upside.
The 7-speed manual is still available, they are offering the new Z06 with 2 transmissions which in my opinion is a brilliant idea.

That front splitter will be a nightmare when parking :D Especially with those end caps. But I really like the design of the new vette overall.
6.2 liter V8 + SUPERCHARGED and it still makes 625 HP....Ferrari can deliver 597 HP from a 4.5 liter V8 without any blowers!
And you want it to cost how much money? The car has to be affordable relative to its competition - a Corvette hallmark. High output NA engines are the most expensive for manufacturers to produce. Note that the 458 Speciale is $300,000.

nrrm1127 I know but I'm 100% sure that they could do more with this Z06, it's just not enough power for an engine that big and a supercharger, not realistic anymore if you look how all the companies are doing with their engines.
If it was naturally aspirated with that amount of power...I'm cool with that. But adding a freaking supercharger and still lack behind the competition....that kinda sucks.

Find me a Ferrari in the same price range as this corvette that can out perform it. You will not. There are different ways to building an engine and car. This is a good formula which keeps costs down.

It may be a fast a car, but at the end of the day its a Chevrolet, and consumers will always favour manufactures like: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Porsche over Chevrolet, regardless of the performance figures!!!

Z06 is the Car model name, Been that way since 1963 C2 Stingray. Not counting the C3 and C4 generations.
is a z06, the z07 similar to this one will have a better track package i think
the z06 is the version of the corvette, like there is the Porsche 911 and there are versions of the 911 like Carrera s, Carrera turbo etc. and the z07 it the trim level. it is a trim option that you can buy. like the 2014 stingray. the stingray is the version(base corvette) but there is a trim level you could buy called the z51 package
American automobile companies in general are really stepping up their game. This car is stunning.

I just don't get why the Yanks can't make an efficient motor... the Ferrari F12 has a naturally aspirated 6.3L V12 making 730hp! that's over 100hp more than this blown 6.2L V8 !! Maybe because the Vette is a lot cheaper than the Ferrari ??

Lockjaw78 I just wanted to point out there's a market for luxury cars just like there's a market for really fast, affordable cars.You don't just choose a Chevy over a Ferrari because the Chevy is faster and cheaper if you have the money. This Z06 may be faster, cheaper, a better deal than, say, an Audi R8 V10, but those are $100k cars, not $200k or $300k. Please don't tell me it embarrases a Ferrari. Any Ferrari. Even a California or FF which are a few tenths of a second slower to 60. They're just in a different league.

You will never get some people understand "different league". Some people seriously compare the new C7 with Ferrari F12 after Drive had run between them and a Porsche. They seriously think they use the same materials in C7 as Ferrari uses. Forget logic, never works on some, even if you repeat it 100 times. "Oh but it's faster" :)

and the supercharged engine is for the zr1 and it should have like 675 680 hp. And the z06 sholud be a big block naturally aspirated engine :D
