- A video of how we use above table projection by using a mirror. UPDATE: These days we have a flat panel tv inserted into a kitchen table. We took the table's leaf out and made a frame for the tv to sit inside. (We should make a video of that too)

Thanks, I actually saw the people across the street moving and they wheeled out a 55" Projection TV they were giving away for free. I asked them if I could take the mirror and screen and they said yes. LOL So thanks, I now have the mirror. Its insanely clean and the image is superb.
Super cool, i have a living room that can work this way, i already have the projector. will get the mirror. I like it becouse you could also display other kind of game boards, even make animations and stuff!! LOVED it thanks for the installation tour
Thanks i dont even D&D but i am so using this concept for my own home entertainment setups and presentations! thankyou!
Cool video. Impressive set up.
Ok, so this is where the UA-cam algo brings me today. Thx 🤷🏻😅
I used an old LCD projector mount and just used liquid nails to glue it all together. It's kind of ghetto, but holding up for the the past several years with no issues.
Amazing stuff!
Was wondering how your mounting the mirror. It looks like you have a great clean way of mounting. Could you describe how its setup?
thanks dave, you are a nice person going to all this trouble
This is amazing this was a mistery to me
Sweet setup for AD&D.
pretty awesome man i never got a chance to play DND but if i did this would definitely be the way to do it
I have a vision in my mind of a projector with a removable mirror to perform two tasks (not simultaneously unless that's possible).
Task 1: Project to the front for use as a TV.
Task 2: Project backward (or immediately downward and backward) to display photos on the opposite wall. At work we have a short-throw projector with a mirror that just points back to the wall it is mounted on, but I'd like to be able to switch the projector back and forth on the fly.
Ideally I'd like the projector to do both at the same time, but that's probably unrealistic without a second projector. Perhaps instead I could rotate the projector back and forth depending on the use case.
Also, keep in mind I rent an apartment, so I'm limited in what I can do in terms of wiring, etc. I'd like to keep the wall damage to a minimum.
+Daniel Dougan ... Sounds pretty cool! Hope to take a video of it if you should complete the rig.
If you're an engineer, you can read upside down. If you own a projector entertainment system, you can read BACKWARDS. Thanks for the vid!
nice! I once put my video on the floor and used a mirror to watch videos on the roof while laying in my bed. It's too bad that every time I want to use that projector I takes me time and work to set up the room as you can see on my video from today. I'd wish I or a friend could create something to have a good set up and just start viewing videos by pressing 1 button
I also got one out of a TV this week. I got an insanely big Fresnel lens also, solar cooking here I come.
I think that If you used it for playing games either you don't mind changing lamps or you can get them at good price. Great idea and I can see a nice couple. Regards.-
this is awesome dude, i have to ask: how many hours plays in a game session?
my group and I spent all the sunday since 3pm to 11+ am
how high is your electricity bill
Very good Thank
Awesome set up, you nerds.
No problem. If you ever want to listen to our game, they are Podcasts at iTunes or at beerandbattle com. I heard some people learning english like to listen to our podcast for the slang.
Great video Now please can you make another video showing the Nec projector MT1050 how is the picture quality of this projector is it sharp how about the contrast please let me know thanks to you
Wow that's pretty cool! Though I'd like to see more Kelly :)
Trruuuuue! We are hard core geeks. Thanks for tuning in.
Are you the guys from Big Bang Theory??? GEEEKKKSSSSS!!!
It may seem simple enough, but everything is easier said then done. To do what you suggested it would require a mount that allows the projector to be aimed vertical and horizontal. Which may be hard to find?
how cool!
cool demonstration. I was thinking about buying used Nec MT 1065 now (2017) for $50. Do you think that it's still a good buy
Here's a weird question--- While using the LCD Projector and a laptop and running a Pathfinder Module that has Pre-Existing maps depicting locations and have the numbers illustrated for the DM to reference per area for box-text, what program do you use to either re-create the map or edit the map, so that they players aren't aware of the numbered areas or perhaps secrets doors/traps?
Although some of that may be correct, depending on model/brand, a blanket statement like DLP is better than LCD isn't true. For instance, I HAD a DLP projector in that exact location.. lasted about 1 year, because why? Because DLP projectors have a color wheel that spins, and being that my projector is near the kitchen, after a year of cooking the color wheel got all greasy, and squealed to a halt, destroying the projector. But there are some more expensive DLPs that are sealed, and sturdier
use a 360 degree rotating joint on mount, unless you like experimenting with mirrors
The NEC 1050 has 0 unfortunately. It's a pretty ancient projector (13yrs old) but pretty rock solid. If you are going to put it near the kitchen, I'd shoot for a LCD instead of DLP because the color wheel tends to get filled with grease and jam up if it's near the kitchen.
Please sir from where can i get optical mirror ( mirror without the glass coating ) cause i need to make my epson 5030 as short throw . Thanks
i dont play d&d but thats freakin sweet setup
question. why did you guys put a regular mirror behind the first surface mirror? is it to keep it from bending and warping the image or something else? im asking because im trying for a similar setup.
Price and source for the first surface mirror? Thanks!
Your wife/girlfriend is adorable. My husband wants to make a gaming room and this is on his wish list. Thank you for the great explanation!
can you recommend any projector specs? what should i be looking for in a projector?
You can get one out of any old free projection TV
Also.. I should note I have over 14 years professional experience in audio visual, and that the projector I'm using in this video and to this day is almost that old (13 years old).. so, no, it's not the best and brightest.. but that's a hell of a run! Go NEC MT-1050! Panasonic just demo'd us their new Laser projector.. Now THAT would be awesome for this application. Quiet, Fast warmup, Long Lamp life.
Quick question i'm looking into getting a projector just wondering how many hdmi Ports does you're projector have
nice!
We're going to do this for our game table...What size is your first surface mirror ?
I guess you'll want something at least 2000 lumens or more... if you want to do anything hi-resolution you'll want a projector with an hdmi in. Also, if your projector is anywhere near your kitchen, and you cook greasy food, don't get a DLP projector or the color wheel inside will eventually get all squeaky and die. Go for an LCD instead. You might also consider how quiet the projector is, since the fan inside can get kind of loud on some models. I don't have a specific model to suggest..
Hi there! I'm working on a show which requires floor projection and found your video to be really useful as we can't hang our projector vertically! May I ask, should the size of the first surface mirror be the same as the desired projection size? What is the recommended distance of hanging the mirror in front of the projector and at what angle? Where did you buy the hanging bracket for the mirror?
Sorry I don't have the mirror anymore but my guess is that the actual surface that I used was only like 6 inches by 8 inches. The bigger the surface, though, the further you could put the projector back making your image bigger. So that depends really. Websites like Amazon is a great place to buy hardware, but B&H Photo Video is also great. Good luck! for me it was a lot of experimenting to get it right.
Thank you David!
im soooooooooooooo jelly right now
It's not that big, I think it was about 6 inches by 8 inches... but I'll have to measure it. I tried a cheap mirror at first, and used liquid nails to glue it onto an old projector mount. Then I glued the first surface mirror onto the other mirror. Kind of ghetto, but it works.
Can you have you assistant present it next time ??
Where did you get the projector from?
One thing though, the mirror from the 55" is quadruple the size of this one.
This helped demonstrate the principle and how it works, but didn't explain where to get the supplies! What size is the mirror? Where did you purchase it? Where did you find the mount, and how did you get the mirror onto it?
I usually keep my eyes peeled at local Phoenix auction houses, yard sales, but primarily EBay and Amazon. BHPhotovideo if it's something specific. Those mirrors can be found indie of some old Overhead Projectors, local auctions usually have them because a lot of schools are ditching them.
+davestrand inside, not indie
@@davestrand what mount did you use for the mirror and how did you attach it?
Oh it doesn't draw that much power. Our games are about 4-6 hours long. Wow, that is a SERIOUS game of DnD. I used to play like that when I was younger. Haven't had a game like that in ages.
Genius
only the Epson brightlink interactive projector is ment to be vertical for tables
I'd like to project onto the ceiling. Do I just need a regular mirror at 45 degrees to get the picture up there?
dochmbi , well, for a crisp image you should use a first surface mirror. But yes, that would get the image up there. Depends on how big you want the image, and how tall your ceiling is, to know how big the mirror should be and how far it should be from the projector... but you can experiment with that. You could probably also just aim the projector straight up.. but it might give you a bigger image to hit a mirror first.
Not sure if you're still monitoring this video/channel, but I'd love to know the dimensions of your Front Surface Mirror, I'm looking to replicate this setup but there's very little information of this sort of rig.
Oh, and that Panasonic Laser projector IS a DLP projector, but it has a totally sealed environment, so the grease couldn't get in. Naturally it will be way out of my price range.
question for you, how far does the mirror need to be from the projector? I recently got a Viewsonic pjd5134 just for this, lol
I suppose it depends on how big the mirror is and to a lesser extent the lens on the projector. Basically you'll probably end up backing up the projector from the mirror until it's almost filling the mirror, but not overshooting it. Hard to say how far without knowing the size of the mirror. I think mine was under 12 inches away.
i see a westie over your left shoulder...you won me over immediately
what i am wondering . is where in the hell do you run your cord through ceiling and then down to plug in the laptop. or am i missing something
Where can I buy a mirror like that with a mount exactly like yours I’m trying to turn my old projector into a short throw projector
Idk, I pulled those materials from an auction... if I was to buy it again I would probably liquid nails glue the mirror to a flat panel articulating mount. Here are some links but you might need to check measurements.

@@davestrand thank you so much this was very helpful exactly what I was looking for
coool dude
my bad lol i watched the last part of the video mutiple cord and adapters good idea
what bracket are you using to mount your mirror ?
James Mcloughlin Hm. I think we bolted the mount to studs in the ceiling. It's a strange ball mount I found at an auction or garage sale. It has a metal plate that was specific to a projector, but I just used liquid nails to glue the metal plate to the glass of the mirror.
cool
Digital1crystal screen paint looks like they need some of your washable screen paint so they just wipe the food and wine of their screen. Lol, they could just coat the whole top of the table
what mount did you use for the mirror?
+Naomi Ellis Hello. It was an old ball mount with a flat metal plate, originally designed for a projector. I just used Liquid Nails to glue the mirror onto the plate. Here is something similar on Amazon so you have a visual. www.amazon.com/Projector-Ceiling-Mount-PowerLite-Cinema/dp/B004DKR3RQ/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1451224192&sr=8-10&keywords=projector+ceiling+mount+ball
If the link doesn't work search for "Projector Ceiling Mount for Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8100" on Amazon, though I certainly did not spend that much.
Where can I buy that mirror mount?
hootie Clinkenbeard sorry, I found it in some surplus gear. Not sure
Wife now! Thanks. :)
Oh Kelly stop your cutie.. 2:23
where did you buy the first surface mirror?
I used to visit auctions in phoenix. This one I pulled from an old Overhead Projector. (Transparency type) They have first surface mirrors inside.
davestrand is it plastic or glass?
Jessica Findley glass
We just leave it up.
sorry for my english btw (i speak spanish, french and italian, and recently im start to learn english)
With assistant in swim suit making vid, no wonder she didn't want to video her like that, you two seem to have been up to seething. Lol, how many assistant dress like that when assisting? Lol, love the vid, Kelly, you look great.
You don't need a projector! Just get a piece of plexiglass to put over your flat screen TV. Hook it up to the computer via a HDML cable, and lay it on it's back on the kitchen table, and you are good to go. I have a dedicated TV that I made into a permanent D&D TV by using electric tape to tape the plexiglass to the front. It works great, and it's reasonably durable - just don't set your books on the screen!
Yep! That's pretty much how we're doing it now.
I agree definitely extra nerdy
4:3 galore
Thats's genius
no, that would skew the image.
How is she still with him
software ?
ياسر عظله oh, I think I was using Photoshop with layers to display the dnd maps but we also used Gimp which is an online free software like photoshop. s.
@@davidlevy6860 i have program interactive floor software
2:23 equals best part of video. kelly is wayy too attractive to be a dnd player, and appears to not be wearing any pants
Haha that projector is gigantic! This is so classic. I wonder what this guy thinks about this video now haha.
whoa this is like the fuhrer's command bunker, if nazis were giant nerds
nerds!
Why not directly focus on table !!
Two reasons really, first off the mount doesn't really aim down, but I'm sure I could rig it to. But more importantly in that room we'd spin the projector around and use it as our entertainment center on the screen behind me.
Kieran Hannigan Oh.. there was a third reason too. The image was too small with the short distance, so adding that extra distance gave me a bigger image.
Perez, we are ALL virgins still, even my pregnant wife.
This video is so cool I almost didn't realize your GF is haaawt
LMAO @ the lady being anal about a female GM. I've been playing RPGs for the last 30+ years and I've only ran across three female GMs and only one was actually good
Well anyways, cool video. Do you take the mirror down when you're not playing or just leave it up?
get a haircut'
NERDZ!!!
Dude did you actual mount a regular mirror all pretty like, before you new that you had to have a first surface reflector..not very geeky bro. You know u can get a giant one out of a projection tv that some one is probably giving away on Craigslist which was around in 2011. plus you get a giant Fresnel lens which you can make like a 2000 degree solar furnace out of. Have fun playing your D&D and don't take it up the reigns too hard. Just hard enough, else you'll bruise your colon. And leave the inscrutable's to the instructed.
Cool thanks for the great info. This video was recorded in 2011 so likely those 2011 projection TVs were not just filling up Craigslist. These days we have just mounted a flat panel tv inside of a table, removing the tables leaf to make room. And yes, we still play dnd.
