Aortic Stenosis - Part 1 (Heart Murmur Series)

This video is part 1 of 2 on aortic stenosis, and one of several in a series on heart murmurs by Susanna Heinze from Health Ed Solutions. In this video, Susanna describes why a stenotic valve is harmful to cardiac function, the main causes of it, and the primary symptoms.
The aortic valve is located between the left ventricle and the aorta. A healthy aortic valve has three flaps and opens smoothly and quietly to allow blood ejection during ventricular systole. When ventricular systole ends, pressure drops rapidly in the left ventricle and the semilunar valve closes with a “dub” sound. This is known as S2 - the second heart sound. This valve closure prevents backflow of blood into the left ventricle.
Stenotic valves don’t open all the way. The word stenosis means “narrowed”.
The three common causes of aortic stenosis in industrialized countries is calcification of the valve, Rheumatic Heart Disease, and “bicuspid aortic valve” (BAV).
A stenotic aortic valve ejects less blood during ventricular systole (for the same amount of force). The left ventricle compensates by getting larger (hypertrophy).
Signs and symptoms for aortic stenosis can be remembered with the acronym SAD: Syncope, Angina, and Dyspnea - (shortness of breath).
