When I watched it in theater, audience awed at every opening dinner, then the camera panned to the characters and showed their frowned faces, then you realized that they didn't have the appetite because they've been eating them all their life. The director delivered it like gold.

I watched this movie after my father had a heart attack to distract myself, we didn’t have the healthiest relationship. The story paralleled my life and I shed a fountain of tears when the daughter came running to the hospital where her dad was admitted. I started noticing how my father, like most asian dads, express their love through actions, like cooking meals or being strict on grades.

The most amazing thing about this film, is that cooking process isn't pretending. What they were pretending is the fact the food seemingly taste bad.
it's the same dishes during the entire filming of the eating, for continuity. Imagine the food after several days. The amazing thing was that they didnt puke.

this is the first thing i show my american friends when they ask about chinese cooking. narratives aside, the food prepared were immaculate and it showcases the variety and skills needed to prepare the food.
and in reverse, we asians back then considered burgers, fries, pizza and cake as celebratory-only food.
That's why most of us were confused when the westerns are in awe of our everyday home cooked food, like "really? that stir fried spinach and sweet and sour fish was that great?"

The movie did a great job at portraying the irony of eating without building relationship in this family, and the father's persistent attempts to build a better relationship with his daughters, through what he does best - cooking.

Mr Chu being an Asian cook doesn't waste any part of the animal; feet, skin, neck, genitals, innards are all important ingredients to him.
It's just a 11 min and 23 second clip and I'm still moved by it. It's so wholesome and bittersweet at the same time. The director knows his craft. Bravo! 🔥
always remember this movie, definitely one of the best i've ever watched ever. Also, it was showing cooking scenes at a time when it was not as widespread or popular as it is today.

Actually it's because they had it so much, it's boring to them.
Most experienced chefs don't check food for seasoning，they ballpark it and it always comes out right. How they do that I don't know but all hotels I've worked in has had great chefs and never seen anyone of them taste the meal 😂

One off the best cooking scenes ever in movies
Warm food are not always equal warm family, how many spice and high-quality ingredient you pour for the feast its useless without good social and understanding between family, that's what I get from this clip. Maybe others have different perspective bout this, but that's just my opinion, thanks.

Eat Drink Man Woman, it's in the title.
This could possibly be the greatest movie ever made. Of course the characters speak Mandarin and it's not made in Hollywood but it's a pure delight from beginning to end. We fall in love with each of the daughters, the food is to die for and the comedy is so subtle that it leaves one gasping for more. Of course Ang Lee, the director, went on to do 'Brokeback Mountain'' but everyone can be forgiven one mistake.
It’s so interesting that Taiwanese, makes the best Chinese movies and music. And not Chinese people. Even though Taiwan is only a small island nation, the creativity and heritage is astounding!🎉
Most people in Taiwan are ethnic Chinese. They're just allowed to make any movie they want, because Taiwan is not a dictatorship anymore, as Mainland China still is.

Daughters look cold hearted
As a home cook, whom have really improved during the pan-demic - I still look at this in awe. I can semi-do the chopping he exhibits. And I do have a bamboo steamer - but fecking hell; I can NOT do what he does. That chopstick crack is straight out of a kung-fu movie.

The film has a few sad moments but in general has a positive message.
I know that there are some scenes which are extremely hilarious! But the part where the family get together to eat, and the kid went for the decorative piece, for its "high value", really made my day! 🤐

By my experience about chinese food . My Grandma ,she always cooks everytime when my family visit her. Soup is first menu always when i'm sitting on table. Because Cantonese people believe what have nutrients everyting boiled in pot when you're eat soup from that . Yes, I'm family is from cantonese ancestor.

I have 7 sister, 3 elder sisters and 4 cousins.
I used to cook and eat together.
When they all gone and married, it felt sad
I guess, they were all a time in their lives when they were unhappy. Feeling the loss of the mother, and with differing opinions and beliefs, they weren't a family that spoke to each other about their troubles.
Eventually, when things are sorted out in the end, they appreciate their father's cooking as a family. :)

And when you have to speak it out at the dinner table, it's gonna get harder to speak, and to eat.
I can feel his daughters feeling of not wanting to dissapoint their father after he cooked so much for 'em, yet they feel the need to speak up their minds and to get their father to understand.

as a person who loves and enjoy the flavor of foods or drinks I can understand what it's like to lost sense of taste. when I got hit by covid delta variant, I feel devastated. Fortunately, I regain my sense again after 3 months. I can't imagine to lost sense of taste for a decades.
