I have been around horses some 40 years working with and ridding race horses during some of that time. WHat I have learned about ALL equines is that they are as individual as people. The successful racehorse spends most of its racing career being fed a diet that is altogether wrong in terms of what an equine would naturally eat. They have strict routine but spend their lives cooped up. Therefore, some of them when finished racing (one of mine) loves to go out and simply be a horse. I unloaded him observed how he reacted; he went crazy in the stable. So the next day he went out in a small paddock alone but where he could see others. He stood and looked , cantered around, rolled and then got his head down and didn't stop grazing. That night he became a lot calmer in the box and after day 2 he was chilled because he realised hewas not going to be imprisoned. However, another we had would have jumped the fences in his field so we had to do it gradually. My advice is know your horse well and trust your own judgement .
Thank you, yes you have to pay attention to the horses and see what works for each horse. Mowgley has adjusted very well to his new life and is so relaxed in the stable that he lies down and even has a snack lying down!!
I love how you do things similar to me, show them everything and spend time with them. not just throwing them into the deep end regardless of age or training!

Very nice, thoughtful work today. So many people want to rush everything, forgetting they 1st need to build a trust bond. Personally, I have found OTTBs will subtlety challenge you in the first week in little ways. They're smart & strong but not mean (unless they've been abused). They are simply checking to see who is supposed to be the leader. Remaining calm, 100% focused on your horse, listening & acknowledging their fears & waiting until they process what scared them is all key to a happy, trusting relationship. Doing all that consistently makes the 'challenge' issues disappear quickly. FYI: Don't get mad at an OTTB if they start to walk off as you're mounting. They are actually TRAINED to be moving forward. The jockey is only hoisted up as they're moving! So be careful when first mounting & understand that like any other lesson, they need to be re-trained to stand still. Most are very treat motivated & will learn fast. Low calorie, low sugar treats are best. They just seek a special reward when being "Good."

Hi Alicia! As you know TBs aren't know for having the strongest of hooves. Unfortunately that Arab gene didn't get passed along very well. A lot of farriers think to add a clear varnish coat where the nails come thru. If you ever have trouble, esp. in horsefly season - do the opposite. Use Farnham 'Rain Maker' - it's a brush on moisturizer, start at very top of hoof & down. I had trouble once & a Race Farm Farrier couldn't help, no matter what he tried. I finally told him to remove all shoes! He was shocked. Every day or every other day I filed the edges of his hooves myself & used " "Rainmaker" every day. 6-8 weeks later, 'Mikey' was happy & the Farrier was BLOWN AWAY with the results. It's amazing stuff.

@@YourRidingSuccess - yes! Like Barielle cream for human nails. See the jumping horse on container. It was invented by French grooms who noticed their own nails were getting amazing from moisturizing their horses hooves! The hoof ( & our nails) flex instead of chipping & breaking. So, the formula was modified for Human use. Hence: Barielle! 1 little jar will last 1 to 2 years 👍 Esp. great in the winter for dry cuticles, too.

When the time comes I’d love to have some tips to keep an OTTB calm under saddle when first starting training. I know it’s gradual but any pointers on how to get the calm and concentrating on the task at hand would be great.

I'm not picking holes, I'm a safety nut so I'd really recommend, hat, gloves and proper boots if your unloading a horse that's a bit anxious coming off the box! Nothing worse then crushed toes and rope burn 🙈 he's a lovely type! Our ottb has been in for 4 months and is an absolute sweetheart. They're amazing and get a bad rep but it not the breed it's how they've been trained which alot of the time is extremely rushed so little things (like leading) aren't trained properly, when I did work riding, breaking them in was... tack on, hop on, hope you didn't die so take your time and start them again with sympathy 🧡 good luck with him I can't wait to see his progress? Will he have and Instagram?
I second the gloves! Especially if they decide to spook and try run away/pull up extremely your hands don't get ripped to shreds, been there done that haha!

You only need gloves if you don't know what you're doing. She was set up to get out the way and drop the rope. You don't hang onto a horse that's bolting, you're not going to win that tug of war.
@@wwaxwork never said anything about getting into a tug of war, it's about prevention, they're quick and unpredictable animals and it's good practice to use gloves, correct footwear and a hat! Safety isn't about experience it's about safety so knowing what you're doing can mitigate situations but also it sets a good example. This series is aimed towards looking at and potentially buying an ottb first the first time so I wasn't hating but encouraging others to be safe is all. She said herself it's about prevention! I absolutely don't recommend getting into a tug of war 🙈

Great series, really enjoying it so far. I've had my OTTB mare for 1 1/2 years now, got her straight off the track. She had 32 starts was almost 5 years old when I brought her home. Poor girl had been at GGF- Golden Gate Fields, California, since she was about 2 years old. She had a companion goat 🐐 at the track, but I didn't take him. I had a miniature horse waiting for her at home that needed another buddy. I live on 15 acres, and the change in my mare (Filina) has been amazing. She is now incredible... I have given her tons of rest and time to be a horse again, poor thing never got the chance to really roll ,and eat grass, all the important horsey things. In at night in the stable, out all day in huge pastures. Took awhile to get her off all the terrible Race Ready feed they give the TB'S in America, causes so many ulcers, and digestive issues. Tried to have her go completely barefoot, but the ground is so hard here in Northern California, I had to put shoes on her fronts, she was way too tender ( typical thin soles TB'S have) I really think that the TB breed has changed a lot compared to when I was a teenager about 30 years ago. The TB'S I used to work with were much more zaney and reactive, go up to Mars and take awhile to come back to Earth. Filina is so mellow, extremely smart, smarter than most Arabians I've owned, but she really is a one person type of horse. She gets nervous around strangers, loud children. She is a Seattle Slew granddaughter, so maybe it's the breeding... Not a Storm Cat baby... ( they can be tough) Anyway, thanks for letting me rant, and really looking forward to your OTTB series!!🐴

I love everything about this series... and what a handsome fella Mowgli is (I have a soft spot for big bay TBs)! I recently moved to central Kentucky for a multitude of reasons, but a BIG one was to be smack in the middle of horse country with other like-minded folks (I was tired of being the only horse lover most other places I lived LOL!)! For some reason the way Alicia explains things resonates with me and makes me see them as kind of just big puppies (obviously they're not dogs, duh, and have different needs... but I've trained many dogs and this makes it so relatable for me, so thank you for that!). Can't wait to see more of Mowgli and his progress!

This was phenomenal. So happy that Mogli responded to all the extra attention and time for your video purposes. Great job of emphasizing never let your guard down to keep both of you safe. So happy to see a “new” horse be willing to sniff out the hay and water right away. (Did you say you also had a Pony Club background? ) I am a former USPC Mom and District Commissioner and have previously retrained 2 ottb’s. I love working with my trainer friends current racing team when I can. I appreciate your wholistic approach and reminder about bonding and giving them TIME. Things are usually on such a tight schedule at the track (IMHO) that the young horses never have time to process and must just carry on. I am very excited to see this transition. Congratulations!

I would take it cautiously as well. His biomechanics is off on that offside fore, being the one in question with the thickening. It would be interesting to know if the thickening has been primary or secondary.
He seems quite sweet and curious.

How do you fix a horse that drifts?? And when they go on a certain rein they chuck their heads up and pull you into the other direction???

Hi Kayleigh! Update for you! - A horse that is drifting means that you don't have control of the shoulders. So you need to do some exercises that help you to gain shoulder control such as shoulder fore, leg yield, shoulder in etc. A horse that is breaking the connection is lackign suppleness so you need to do exercises that help to improve suppleness in the direction they are stiff. Hope that helps!

how do you teach an ex endurance horse not to canter or race other horses if you are hacking? my lease horse tends to start cantering if he sees other horses cantering or overtaking him and i find it really hard to stop him
