Hello Benita! Here's an update for you - With feeding horses, the biggest thing always to take into consideration is rouhage. The second thing is you really need to look at the individual horses. And really great consideration for older horses is that they might struggle more to keep condition on so the feeding requirements might just be higher. A really good video to look at is the video for when Mowgley first arrived and Alicia went through what she was feeding him because at that point, she wanted to put some condition on him as well and really it's no different apart from just the energy requirement. Where Alicia talks about energy requirement, you might not do that because the horse is a retired. But all the other things are applicable and the biggest point is they have good access to roughage. My last TB exploded on peas 🤯, so hesitant to go there again. Love that you too do unlimited hay. My fellow is at pasture but whenever I bring him in whether to tack up or groom him I always have a haynet to keep him occupied and content.
Hi Sally, I wouldn't have said so no. But it also is about how much work you are doing with them. It is high in protein and energy, so if you are not riding him a lot, it will give him excess energy. Hope that helps! x

Love it! So appreciate that you’re taking it very slow. I also found your feed choices very appropriate and quite interesting. I’m watching from the USA so I’ve reached out to the company that provided your products for more information.
Great! Thanks so much for letting us know. Tell us how you get on?x

He reminds me of my OTTB❤️. I'm so glad you're doing this series. You're sharing really great educational material. I just need to jump on your forage wagon. Yes!!! I see such heavy grain diets where I currently live. It causes acidosis... not good.
So happy you are loving the videos! What are the challenges you have with your OTTB? ✨
@@YourRidingSuccess well unfortunately a field injury sent him into "retirement". He still does his horsey Pilates and we go on walks. But when we were riding it was really challenging for me to maintain a consistent contact that he found acceptable. I felt like if I made one tiny mistake his head would fly up.
Sorry to hear that, he is lucky to have you! Watch our Training Scale video coming out today and that will help with your questions about contact 🤩

Oh, those are very different feeds than I've been taught about - never even heard of peas as horse feed! Is this also available in Australia, or is it just a UK thing?
In Australia it is a bit harder to find them than in the UK! It would be great if they were easier to find in Aus ✨
We have extruded lupins in Aus! Also a low starch, quality protein! 😊
I think they would give my boy too much energy 😂 he certainly doesn’t need anymore of that 🙊

I know this was a while ago, but I’d love to see you train an Arabian for dressage as a second project horse.
Thanks for the suggestion!! The idea with the OTTB was to show people how to train their OTTB for dressage, but hopefully there are tips in there for everyone!! 🤩
i would be super interested to see a video on horses that are uncomfortable in stables, and how you can help them overcome stable anxieties.
my horse is super claustrophobic and has his first stay away show where stabling is the only option...

Thanks so much for another fab video. I'm a somewhat seasoned OTTB (currently onto my second) interested to know if you consider the peas to be heating? My last TB exploded on peas 🤯, so hesitant to go there again. Love that you too do unlimited hay. My fellow is at pasture but whenever I bring him in whether to tack up or groom him I always have a haynet to keep him occupied and content.
Hi Sally, I wouldn't have said so no. But it also is about how much work you are doing with them. It is high in protein and energy, so if you are not riding him a lot, it will give him excess energy. Hope that helps! x

Very helpful information, I can not find in Belgium extruded peas as I would like my horse to build muscles too. Any other supplements you can recommend for building muscles?
Anything that is a legume is a really good choice. Feed and work is in general better then supplements

Good info! But what options for replacing peas and soya meal for protein and fat? I only have beet pulp, alfalfa and oils in my area. Are they ok?
Copra and whole lupins are good 😊
Loved this episode 😁
@@laurenanderson2936 don’t have them either 🤣
@@trousseau_ideal487 are you in Russia? It looks like there are a few markets for lupins there but forgive me if I'm wrong - I don't speak any of those languages in that region. 💚
Sounds like you've got your fat, fibre and protein already though 🙂 Alfalfa is protein, oils are fats and beet pulp is your fibre 👌
So does he not get turnout other than the 1-2 hours of hand grazing??
At the moment we keep him closely monitored. In time, we will have him turned out without assistance. But for now he needs us to show the way, so to speak. Learn that the field is a time for relaxation and grazing, not for galloping around in fear and anxiety. It will take time and patience.

I would love to see a video explaining how to begin feeding a horse hard food/how to transition onto new feed (Is it any different when changing supplements, etc). Especially taking into consideration most people can only get out 1 or 2 times a day for feeding.
It's so hard to find detailed explanations about it and it could fit well into the 'beginner guide' series
Hi Jazzy, Great suggestion. Alicia is having a feed video next month! x
