Such a beautiful heartfelt tribute. Thank you so much for posting this. I am a born and raised Vancouverite and Gino will always be remembered as one of our greatest folk heroes, not just as a player and very brave warrior but as a beautiful soul and human being, a point of pride and inspiration for all hockey fans past and present and future players coming up 👍

Fans showing up at the hospital brings tears to my eyes. Imagine people you don't know coming to cheer you outside the hospital. RiP Gino. A true warrior.

Coaches know when the season isn't going well they could be fired, but this was insanity and how this played out was pretty unprecedented. Usually a team knows they're going to fire a guy, and if they don't know who's replacing them, they don't spend weeks or months interviewing for the job while the guy's actually still coaching.
Typically, they remove the coach, and then they install an interim, typically one of the assistants, and then they do their formal search for a coach, at which time they decide what they're doing with the remaining staff. The way this was done was ridiculously disrespectful and I think it was meant to be that way. Rutherford wanted to stick it to Aquilini, and Bruce was the collateral damage.
Jim wanted his own coach and resented the fact that Frankie hired one before he got there. If that's the case, why did he take the job? He's in his 70s. He doesn't need the money. And he screwed over a well respected and beloved coach in the process, causing possibly irreparable damage to the PR situation between the Canucks organization and their fans. People are still chanting for Bruce to this day during AWAY games, let alone home games.
And the bottom line is, coaches typically take the blame if the team isn't doing well, but this regime has been in power for a year, and they've done next to nothing to fix the roster, and Bruce took the fall for it. "They don't play with structure." Structure works when you have a team like the Devils in 1995, full of grinders and really hard working players, many of whom are in the league because they worked hard to get there. They had a few guys who could score, but they were a low scoring team. You can't bring in structure with a team like this. It won't work. And if they brought in Tocchet to "evaluate" the roster and help management make changes, Bruce has been a coach far longer than Rick. He could have easily told management where the holes were. This was awful, and for no other reason but that Bruce wasn't Rutherford's guy.

I love the story about Gino going to Moscow and knocking on the door of the KGB asking to see Pavel. The KGB obliged him. And now Gino and Pavel have both gone home so to speak. One to Heaven and the other back to Mother Russia. What a story. It would make for a pretty good movie. "The Rocket and the Enforcer".

who's the biggest Putin fanboy Ovi or Bure? I think it's Ovi, but Bure's definitely more intelligent and cynic from a political point of view, with all the mob connections, et cetera, he even got some type of law degree, while Ovi's just a stereotypical jock.
