Had one for 10 years.A few things I have learn't. Always have the handle at the back of the kettle not in front of the water hole. I can boil 500 mil in around 4.30 minutes using a mix of air dryer lint and wax melted and poured into an egg carton ( 12 piece). One piece lasts about 6 minutes .This works real well. I have also used fat wood which was good. You also do not have to completely fill the funnel with sticks ,just enough to fill the base is sufficient. I have a small fry pan the I cook stuff with by putting the pan over the base of the kettle. i love it. Much easier to use than this guy says.
I ordered the trekker one person model, I'm an addict for twig stoves and when used right they are amazingly useful, I've cooked full on meals for multiple people at a time off one load of wood with the 5x5 stoves. From what I've seen on the kk with multiple videos is that this system will be a blast to use.
One of the best peices of equipment that I've ever owned.I don't care about the weight,or bulk.It does the job right, every time, and in all weather. One of the best investments you'll make.
I got the base camp fully loaded kit. Comes with quality cups, plates and pots. It’s got the hobo stove attachment and the pot grabber too. It’s hands down the best piece of outdoor equipment I’ve ever purchased. It works even better in stormy conditions or open summit conditions. Its defo not finicky when it comes to fuel. You could even modify one of them so it can distill saltwater into fresh drinking water. When it comes to bulk I use that to my advantage. I put my cutlery set in the bag and try to stuff teabags, sugar or oats into the empty spaces. By the way my favourite wild flower is dog rose. Loads of good uses.
i just found one of these at the flea market for 7 bucks. its an older one with the cork stopper instead of the plastic one but its brand new ,never been used . I cant wait to get out and test it!
KK are brilliant carry water by threading a piece of cord through the staple of the bung and tying it at round the kettle. Pack the inside of the chimney with food or gear. Get the hobo stove attachment for cooking directly on the base. The top pan set is more for keeping food warm. Also great for lowering into wells on a length of cord to reach hard to access water Put the base on two bits of stick and you won’t have a visible burn mark on the grass. Essential kit for the Austere medic as you need lots of boiled water (abdominal penetration needs to be flushed with about 30 pints of sterile water before sewing up!
I think, all things considered (bulk, endless fuel, efficiency, durability, versatility, etc.) the KK is a great option. It does take some getting used to, but it's just a bit of a mental shift from more modern solutions. It can be somewhat of a challenge cooking on top due to the direct heat being hard to regulate. There must be water in it at all times regardless, otherwise you will burn it out and damage it! KK is awesome. Old timers knew what they were doing!
I believe the trekker is the smallest kettle and the scout is the medium sized one. Also, they now have a pot stand that doubles as a stand for the kettle so you don't leave a scorch mark. Highly recommended bit of kit, I love mine!
I never thought of it before watching this video, but one of your accessories could be a rubber screw plug that is used in plumbing. You could use this plug (after removing from heat). This would allow you to carry water on the trail securely with no risk of dumping it. In regards to your egg boiling experiment, it'd be faster to just boil water in the kettle, put it into a pan, put the egg into the pan with the boiling water, cover, and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. The top burner is really meant to directly cook small items, like frying an egg. Very good review! I love mine. Mostly use it for heating water for coffee and freeze dried meals.
Favorite flower: Iris, Thank for the review of the Kelly Kettle, I've been wanting to get one for emergency situations. I live in an apartment. With one of these, I could cook and sanitize water on my balcony if I had to.
I have the Kelly kettle scout and I love it for grid down situation, I would not give it up for anything!!! Thanks for the review - the bong is made to whistle when the water boils - favorite flower is daffodils
Love my Kelly Kettle! I find it easier to light when the tinder is sized and put in the base, light and place the chamber. The hobo stove attachment is great as well🇺🇸
Spot on! It’s intended, I believe, to be started by lighting the fire in the mass before putting the kettle on top, or build up the sticks etc in a way that it can be lit through the side hole after putting the kettle on. Just got one today. Love it!!
yep, I do this all the time or you can use just the base as a stove. That works well when used with a small bit of mesh across the top of the base as a pot base.
I'll lash it to my pack instead of inside. Love the idea of the quickness and amount of fuel I do not need to carry. For my winter hiking and dehydrated meals this is perfect.
I finally got the Trekker model, and for a solo camper, it's outstanding. Yes, it takes up more space, but that is offset by not needing to carry a fuel supply, and you can boil/sterilize water as you come across it. I also like the nesting feature for most of the components. The biggest nuisance for me is the 2-piece support stand; I use ranger bands to secure them together and lessen the rattling while hiking. As for the time involved (sometimes); hey, you're camping, what's your hurry?
If you like the functionality of the Kelly Kettle but dislike its bulk, you could look for the swiss army Borde bottle (also known as vulcan stove in the US). It´s a nesting three piece kit (a one litre bottle, a half litre cup, and the stove) in the rough shape and size of a thermos bottle. Originally it was intended for mountaineers to efficiently melt snow into drinking water as well as to thaw your water bottle in case it froze, but thanks to the chimney shaped stove it also cooks water roughly as fast as a Kelly Kettle does. In the swiss army it was used with the M71 burning gel cooker as a heat source, but you can also burn wood in it or use it with something like the Trangia pot stoves. Maybe you could even fit a small free standing multifuel or butane burner like from Soto in there.
Great info. I’ve been eyeing those things for years. I already have a Kelly Kettle and just ordered a Swiss mess kit for my pot. It’s larger than the others of the type (holds 2 liters). Now I’m thinking of how to make a Caldura Cone type set up for it so that I can use it more efficiently with the Kettle and without, both with wood and or denatured alcohol. I have one of those two bag water purification systems and a shower bag. The plan is to mix the two, use the shower bag as the dirty water bag and be able to purify water and/or take a hot shower off the trail as well as cook food.
I have no favorite flower but thanks for the review and more importantly how you did this review. Using someone with little to no experience with it going at it for the first time and seeing how he did made for a great realistic video good job guys
I bought the largest Kelly Kettle for use at home in suburbia. We have trees but that's a resource I'd like to preserve as long as possible in a long term, power out situation. My idea is that I can cook food and disinfect water for the family using just twigs that fall naturally from the trees on a daily basis. Much more efficient and saves the wood resource for when it's really needed most. I've cooked a big breakfast of oatmeal (boiled water), eggs and bacon (frying pan on top) with it so far and I'd say that's a success.
It's basically just a double-walled rocket stove. I'd use a simple rocket stove with my usual coffee pot and cooking pan. I think I can build a rocket stove that fits into my coffee pot!
You could just put the egg in the pan and then add the boiling water from the Kelly Kettle and leave it sit for a while and it will cook. Just leave it in longer for hard boiled instead of soft boiled. Also you can pick up twigs from the ground and use those instead of pulling them off trees.
If you want to carry water - you can cook the water at home in the KK, take it off the heat an put the rubber plug in place. After cooling down the remaining air in the KK will pull the plug tight and it will not fall of.
I love daisies !! And I loved watching you learn your way around the Kelly Kettle !! I have a trekker as well. I use mine frequently and it's just Fun !
I ordered the trekker full kit model, im an addict for twig stoves so it was only a matter of timebefore i bought a kk lol. With a 5x5 folding stove i can get close to an hour of useful cooking heat depending on how i load the stove, it'll be fun figuring out how I'll like using the trekker, with the extra attachments it turns a rocket stove when using the kettle into a useful hobo stove for a frying pan or larger pot. From watching all the different videos on this device there are all sorts of different ways of doing your fire, i think i like the way a couple different guys did it. the one guy built a base of short thicker pieces layed out two layers crisscrossed then progressively smaller stuff and started a fire from the top, placed the kettle on top and it started drawing in oxygen from the airhole at the base, it was a blazing furnace. The second guy put his small stuff on the bottom getting progressively bigger placed the kettle on and lit his kindling through the airhole on the base, same thing a furnace spitting flames out the top. Others lit a fire starter in base put the kettle on and were feeding larger branch pieces in through the chimney, we all like playing with fire in our own way lol. What i really like about this system is it has essentially went unchanged in design since the late 1800's, material its made out of and a whistle stopper i think have been the only changes, a tried, tested and true system. Enjoyed the video thank you for putting it out. Cheers
Favorite Flower: Sunflower. The stems would make great Kelly Kettle fuel and they're so easy to grow! I have the Scout model that can load up to 32 ounces of water into easily and comes with the cooking equipment needed on a trip in the mountains. It has gotten really hot here and we use propane indoors to cook. Since I have a bunch of siberian elms that drop limbs year-round I decided I would use those and prunings from my fruit trees. The result: I always wanted an outdoor kitchen and this costs me almost 'nothing' to make dinners. Gallon of water (1/2 to clean the dishes with), fist full of kindling, a little soap, and patience. I might even start using it in the winter since inflation is driving up the price of propane. I cannot wait to see my bill come September after they haven't filled my tank since May.
It is easy enough to strap the thing on the outside of my pack and, considering I do not have to carry fuel, it is no heavier than anything else I would carry. I like these a lot. I have several of them.
It would be a good to position the handle on the opposite side to the filler before you start to make for easy and safe lifting the kettle when hot. Always read the instructions. They are there for a reason....that being Safety.
I just bang the whistle cork over a plastic bag and ram that bugger in the whole and carry it full, never leaks.Or you could use an expansion plug with a wing nut. Cooks amazing with hobo setup. I am amazed you haven't spray painted it in camouflage 🤣
Once you get the fire going in the base, put the KK on and feed from the top , this raises the fire flames and lets you cook at the top more efficient.
Sunflower, I also agree with this subscriber which mentioned taking the boiling water and putting it in thecup on top which would hurry along your heated water for the top you can get you some more water to put in the lower container and that's also a way to hurry along you're disinfecting situation for water in the field. Two birds with one stone... Three is two, two is one, one is none. Heard that somewhere.
I love the KK, very efficient at doing what they do. I just don't want to pack one about because they're a single purpose item. I do like the big one for a Basecamp item.
I'd want a large kelly kettle in a long term power outage. There is a hobo stove that goes with the larger kelly kits and it's much faster at cooking. The new plugs whistle when the water boils. Check out the new stuff in kelly.
Your brave with that turkey Jason I had turkeys as a kid in 1980-81 I had to take a stick to beat them back they where always in the brawling flogging mode no matter what, I hated them things LOL, I WAS ABOUT 12 YRS OLD AND GOT A FEW FLOGGINGS LOL GREAT INFO ON THIS PRODUCT THANKS HOPE YOUR WEEK IS AWESOME !!
HOT TIP: Put a shower head on the kettle for an excellent hot gravity shower. You need to have a tube to suck in the air to replace the water as the shower empties.
There is a smaller version called the trekker model. Add the hobo base on the fire box and place you pan on that and cooking goes much faster like a three minute egg.. I bought the whole outfit and love it.
Take the kettle off after you boil your water and use the hobo stove part to cook with . . . Not to be that know it all ass that is in every crowd that's just how I use mine keep up the awesome content " you're a daisy if you do"
I want to get my kid into outdoors stuff. Never have been much myself. Starting with car camping, I thought one of these would be awesome to get both of us 'roughing it' compared to the urban residential lifestyle. Plus, as you pointed out, if the shelves run dry I have years worth of wood in my yard for cooking with this thing.
What is your favorite flower mine are jonagold apple blossom cause i like the fruit that comes after or... Watermelon flowers cause that fruit is nice too
Clean water is the most important thing in a shtf situation. You get sick and you’re eff’d. Plus warm water bottle in sleeping bag and you’re great. Also, have teas and soups available. Warmth is great.
I might be homeless next month but i never thought I'd be still be more prepared then most people in my town for survival because I have my camping gear and my kelly kettle base camp kit
I agree the KK is large. My disagreement comes in regards to long term use. No matter what, you'll need a fuel starter. The system doesn't breath enough to be effective with char cloth or friction fire.
You can take the double-walled container off the base, start the fire in the base like you would with any fire-- then return the container back on top of the base.
If you want to boil and egg you heat the water in the kettle then boil the egg in a pan on the "hobo" stove , it really isn't supposed to be run beyond boiling the water. Light the fire in the base with very little fuel then put the kettle on as soon as you have flame ,the chances are you won't need to top it up.
The hobo stove accessory would make cooking a lot easier, faster, and more efficient. In my opinion there's no better kit than the Kelly Kettle ultimate set up. -Also, it would have been a lot faster to use the first boiled water in the pot with the egg, then replace the colder water in the jacket with remaining hot water.
I don't know about you but mine boils water in about 2 minutes after filling the base/chimney with woody stemmed dry plant matter, twigs from fruit trees, and hardwood branches that have fallen last winter. Use the hot water to help clean your tools regularly and your entire issue goes away. While mineral deposits are probably inside the jacket using baking soda and vinegar then letting it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing the entire thing out until you can't 'smell' anything will clean the inside.
Yesterday I used a meths cooker put on a spacer that was above the level of the base and it boiled 500mil in 6.25 minutes. Just another way to use the Kelly kettle.
Amazon has KKs in both stainless steel & aluminum. Anyone have experience with the aluminum one? (Durability & cook times?) That puffball of a Tom-turkey is a scene steeling star! Orange tree blossoms are a favorite🍊
Had one for 10 years.A few things I have learn't. Always have the handle at the back of the kettle not in front of the water hole. I've had a K.K. since the 1970s . Will never be without one. Power goes down I have safe water and easy means of cooking.
One of the best peices of equipment that I've ever owned.I don't care about the weight,or bulk.It does the job right, every time, and in all weather. One of the best investments you'll make.
You sound a little like a Kelly sales person.... IMHO

To boil the egg, pour the water from the jacket into the pot. Then put it back on the top. Or the grate or hobostove for the bottom.
yep, that is the way to do it.
@@jessevorwald8259 I was thinking the same thing 👍
i just found one of these at the flea market for 7 bucks. its an older one with the cork stopper instead of the plastic one but its brand new ,never been used . I cant wait to get out and test it!
Would prefer the cork version
@@zeez9053 yea it looks like i can carry water in the kettle with the cork
That was a “super find”!
Score!
Lucky find. They're expensive
The ability to boil safe water and cook with the same fuel load is pretty awesome.

I have the base camp version, £86 but Im so impressed with it , no matter what they cost they will repay you 10 fold. Superb.
Favorite flower: Iris,
Thank for the review of the Kelly Kettle, I've been wanting to get one for emergency situations. I live in an apartment. With one of these, I could cook and sanitize water on my balcony if I had to.
Add the fuel in the from the top using long sticks to get a roaring "rocket" fire that will boil the top pan in
Thats handy to know as Im thinking about getting one of these. Thanks.
I have the Kelly kettle scout and I love it for grid down situation, I would not give it up for anything!!! Thanks for the review - the bong is made to whistle when the water boils - favorite flower is daffodils

Good call. I ain’t too smart.
yep, I do this all the time or you can use just the base as a stove. That works well when used with a small bit of mesh across the top of the base as a pot base.
I came to the comments just so I could say that
I prefer the Emberlit Fireant for portability and versatility, but Kelly kettle looks good for a base camp sorta thing.
I'll lash it to my pack instead of inside. Love the idea of the quickness and amount of fuel I do not need to carry. For my winter hiking and dehydrated meals this is perfect.

If you like the functionality of the Kelly Kettle but dislike its bulk, you could look for the swiss army Borde bottle (also known as vulcan stove in the US). I have the Scout model that can load up to 32 ounces of water into easily and comes with the cooking equipment needed on a trip in the mountains. I have a stainless steel camp kettle it' does the job I bought it for boil water especially in the winter

If you ain't there, you're square. 🤓
Where we live at sea level, it takes roughly 21 minutes to boil egg water, anyway...
It would also be advisable to keep the handle on the opposite side of the pouring spout. The boiling water doesn't do any good to the wooden handle
My favorite flower is plumeria.
Lilacs~ They smell amazing.

Put a shower head on the kettle for an excellent hot gravity shower. You need to have a tube to suck in the air to replace the water as the shower empties.

Thanks for the review, will prob get this over a degassifier stove now. Orchid flowers are pretty awesome 😍
You’re welcome
Thanks so much. I am teaching my 10 year old to use one, under supervision of course.
Thanks for the great information. Texas Bluebonnet. Of course. 👍👍
I love mine and I bought another one in steel version as a backup
Will the pan holder part fit over the burn pan ? Might be faster to remove the water bottle if it would work
Try using a wood gas stove as a way to increase burn efficiency. The smaller ones fit inside.
They make a smaller one, the trecker about 1/2 litre.
Base camp is larger 1.6 litre but much larger and bulkier.
/while transporting it you can fill a ziplock bag full of fatwood or other kindling and stull the baggie in the chimney of the kettle.
Outstanding turkey video lol
I agree the KK is large. My disagreement comes in regards to long term use. No matter what, you'll need a fuel starter. The system doesn't breath enough to be effective with char cloth or friction fire.
You can take the double-walled container off the base, start the fire in the base like you would with any fire-- then return the container back on top of the base.
Thank you for the video.
When you cook somethnig on the top, be sure to keep always a lot of water in the kettle to avoid it to explose.
It's a small samovar. I have several of those and love them, so this would probably be a good idea.
Favorite flower is a good sticky indica
My favorite flower is a rose. I don’t think you’d win a fight with that turkey. It looks vicious!
Have you tryed it with the hobo stove
thank you for the video!!
Hows it going guys I actually got a notification this time
Try the new whistler cap it won't pop just let's you know when soups on.
Martha White is my favorite flower.
What if they make a bottle to fit in the chimney part of the kettle ? Would it be sufficient for a meal?
you can cook just on the the hobo stove faster, lol in manual favorite flower, dandelion
I'm guessing its lot quicker if you pour the hot water from the kettle into the pot for the egg and then refill the kettle
Favorite flower? Dandelion. Hey, it has a flower on it. LOL
All parts of it are edible, high in vitamin C, makes a great tea and hey, it has a flower on it.
Fantastic
The most overlooked thing is the cleaning aspect. For regular pots. I find water boiling a frustrating and dangerous and slow thing
I bought one because these are allowed during a camp fire ban
I didn't get a notification on this one? Who knows? Fav flower is ...trillium.
Favorite flower: thistle flowers
Favorite flower?

Amazon has KKs in both stainless steel & aluminum. Anyone have experience with the aluminum one? (Durability & cook times?)
