- What is QRILLPAWS? -
QRILLPAWS brings the excitement, joy and extreme performance from the most exotic dog mushing races to a worldwide audience. From the 2020 season, for the first time the sport, the profiles and the adventurous lifestyle will be covered and distributed through new digital platforms and international TV broadcasting. People from around the world will be able to follow the two- and four-legged athletes like never before.
The first season of the World Series consists of four legendary and historic dog races across the globe, ultimately determining the world’s best dog mushers. The races are unique and great sporting events separately, and by bringing them together in an international championship we believe the sport can reach a totally new level of interest.
Learning from the elite - training, nutrition, welfare
QRILLPAWS is looking to inspire and influence regular, everyday dog owners - shining a light on the practices of elite dog mushers and the exceptional dog care they provide. The dog mushers will inspire and be a great example for dog owners around the world in regards to training, nutrition, general welfare and guidelines for their own dogs.
The 2020 Season
The World Series starts in January 2020 in Minnesota, USA with the “John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon,” before the series takes us to Norway and “Femundløpet”. QPAWS then travels to Russia and ”Volga Quest” before the world finale in Alaska during the legendary “Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.”

About the Qrill Pet Arctic World Series
QRILLPAWS will highlight the sport of long-distance dog mushing. The aim is to help the sport and the mushing community to grow and to strengthen the separate race organizations, as well as showcase the worldclass dog care that the sport is famous for.
The series is based on a joint point system, advanced digital visualization of GPS tracking, as well as television production and distribution. QRILLPAWS was established as a non-profit sports series through an initiative by Aker BioMarine. All proceeds go back to the events and as investments in the sport of long distance dog mushing.

I can't imagine being in a sport where you get all that beautiful scenery and you get about a dozen of your best friends along with you for the ride

He is a passionate runner. Honestly, I had to get a e-bike because I just could not keep up with him.
I wish the dogs could know how majestic they are, know what they are achieving and are involved in.
I love this race and everything that stands for...these mushers and dogs are amazing athletes and I love how the sponsorship has increased for a sports that needs to be more recognized and better compensated. One day before I leave this world I will go see this amazing event.

I dont wish to demonize anyone. But this dog racing stuff is incredibly extreme. When this race started back in 1973 the teams were out there two weeks or more. slowest team was 30 days.
Nowadays they are coming across the finish line in about 8-10 days. Its a completely different thing. A very different experience for the dogs to be sure. How fast do we expect these dogs to run?
Only half the teams even finish. And it normalizes overbreeding and a very low standard of care. If you take away the race it doesn't take away anyones way of life. It just removes incentive to breed so many dogs and push them so hard.

@@doggodoggo3000 "I don't wish to demonize...." is an untrue statement on your part. You've demonized in one fashion or another in all of the multiple comments you've posted. Breeding animals for sport racing is common in every speed racing industry, for example horse racing and greyhound racing. It isn't solely limited to sled dog breeders and racers.
@@vickimeyers2672 You are correct that all forms of animal racing do that, but greyhound racing is illegal across most of the united states already and was recently banned in Florida.
Ever since working in dog sled racing I advocate against all forms of animal racing.
The animal welfare act in the US banned all forms of animal fighting at one time. They didnt ban dog fighting one year, then rooster fighting another, etc etc. They banned all of them at once. We need to do something similar with "animal racing." Ban all forms at one time.
@@doggodoggo3000 you can advocate to your heart's content. However, the Iditarod has been run for 50 yesrs and will not stop until Alaskans, themselves, make that decision.
@@vickimeyers2672 Well that sorta depends, like if an amendment was added to the animal welfare act banning animal racing it wouldnt matter wtf alaskans want.
Plus all the major sponsors of the iditarod are gone already, from what I can tell its getting to the point to where it costs more money to put on than it generates.
And the reason all the heat is on the iditarod is because its the only race the general [public really knows about. There is still racing in the continental united states and all across Canada. And also the iditarod has the unfortunate side effect of dogs dropping dead during the race. I worked in sprint racing, hardly any dogs die during those races. But the iditarod has had loads of dogs die during its short 50 year run.
The iron dog is 1000 times cooler. The iditarod is stupid and cruel. You should be in support of your state focusing more on a sport that people can actually sponsor and has more money in it.

Excellent! We follow the Iditarod pretty closely, having been recreational mushers in Alaska for many years. You did a great job of giving a 2 hour overview! Only recommendation: a few more glimpses and comments by the other wonderful teams below the Top 5.

Does anyone know what type of headlamps they all seem to be using? I’ve never seen that model before and I’m fairly knowledgeable in headlamps.
I noticed on live broadcasts no one can comment. Can any send me a link on how to prepare my pup for husky sports? She is 11 months. I have been teaching her mushing commands. She has them down pretty good except for the big one which is MOVE ON. She is anywhere from 40-50%

"Musher Rob Cooke collected an unexpected red lantern for finishing last in the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race earlier this month, but now has his sights set on becoming the first Siberian husky team to finish both that race and the Iditarod in the same year." Its "alaskan huskies" in the iditarod, which isn't even really a "breed"

@@doggodoggo3000 Siberian Huskies can reach running speeds up to 30 miles per hour. They can run up to 150 miles in a day, averaging a speed of 9-10mph.
@@vickimeyers2672 just do that math on that. 150 miles at 10mph is 15 hours of running. Thats excessive and cruel, and for that to be remotely possible would have certain trail and weather conditions as well as loads of physical conditioning and training. And maybe find me an example of that actually happening with siberians.
I worked in sprint racing, much shorter distances. 20-30 miles tops. The dogs run faster, no one is running anywhere near 30mph. They might can run 30mph while not hooked to a sled but thats not really relevant to this conversation or all that unique to them.
I cant figure out why none of these mushers are wearing ski goggles? 😂

I cringe at the idea of having greyhound in the breed that is racing in this race. Its not right! lol A greyhound on its own would die in theses conditions on its own! Where as our beloved Sibes and Mals would not..
Lurchers/Eurohounds have been used in Alaska in and out of the race for years and do perfectly fine

The conditions were right for his type of Dog team... More of the Sibe build that gives more power all though slower, but can run longer at slower speeds... It all adds up... Put the real Alaskan dogs back in the race!! I think there should be restrictions on breed that is allowed in the race! It should be mandatory Siberian Husky or Alaskan MAlamute... whoa what a race that would make... way slower but would reflect the genuine race protocol of not letting the sled dog die out!

Good points. A race where dogs don't get straw or coats would definitely select for a more authentic working dog rather than a sporting dog.
You're forgetting Alaskan Huskies and many other sleddog breeds like the Laika (seven Laika breeds)

@@annag5576 Sledding isn't abuse or animal cruelty 🤷♀️. The 400+ dead dog stats put out by PETA are literally false. They include every dog that died even outside of the race (i.e not participating) even if that was from natural causes

Coca Cola no longer support Iditarod culture tradition is not an excuso for abuse,
I personally dont support the iditarod because of the brutal animal abuse… but if this race was gone, the wilderness might be disturbed and construction might intrude the forests, expanding the state. I think the race is something that protects the preservation of nature in Alaska.
I think you need to know the mushers and how they treat their dogs. I have no knowledge of this sport but i definetely think it ranges from people who run their dogs to death for a win to people who really do this for the love of the dogs. Huskies are really bred to do this and they become agitated and annoyed if they can't excercise. you'll see a lot of dogs in this video with their tails up and wagging ready to do the job

@@Aeradill on this matter I agree, you can’t put all mushers into one group. Most mushers keep their dogs on a small leash for most of their life, even after the dogs retire, I guess thats my main problem with it, along with the radical mushers that run their dogs without stopping until their mouths bleed and muscles contract
@@skateraptor12 I suggest you educate yourself on the rules of the Iditarod, as far as the length of time a musher may run his/her dogs. Additionally, at mandatory stopping areas, there are veterinarians who thoroughly examine and check the health of each dog before the musher is allowed to proceed after the team has rested.

Her dogs are world class athletes. Pretty sure she can be trusted to make their medical decisions.
@supernoodles: do you own, raise, and race sled dogs? If not, how do you know what form of "medicine" may work best for them? In some areas where sled dogs are raised, standard veterinary care is not quickly or readily available. Thus, the mushers have to utilize alternate methods of care to treat their dogs and keep them healthy. Such choices are theirs to make.
Too bad in this race the dogs are the ones putting the most effort, enduring that grueling race sometimes to the death.
You obviously don't know anything about these kinds of dogs they love to do this you can hardly keep them from running like this
@margaritacisne: obviously, you have no idea of the physical toll the race takes on the mushers. They don't spend their time in the race standing on the sled runners, solely along for the ride. Additionally, the sled dogs love to run. They're not forced to do so, and often will continue to run even after the musher has shouted out several times for the team to halt. In such instances, the musher must deploy the sled's brake and force the team to halt.
This sport is absolutely ridiculous. More dogs die in this race from being so sick and tired that they collapse and choke on their own vomit. 😢. Just so cruel!
