As a Japanese girl living in Scotland, Kevin in this video is speaking deliberately slowly and more clearly to help himself be understood better. He even began saying "yes" instead of "aye", which to a Scot is the most cringe inducing thing they can do.

kevin actually slows his talking down when on tv here in the uk, if you watch one of his shows in front of his home glasgow audience you may struggle
I see that, when I've watched some of his specials they are a bit harder to understand. He's still great though I like him a lot.
I live not far from glasgow, and I seen Kevin when he did the sell out 16 nights at the Hydro. It was amazing, the only thing was though, that venue is HUGE, so I had to watch the screens as I was quite far back, I couldnt stop thinking that that could've been anyone walking around the stage, as they looked so small, and we could just be watching a recording 😂 so I've seen him live, but at the same time, I didn't see him 😂 not with my own eyeballs at least

@@AfterWorkReactions I try to understand the problem. Maybe it's because I have hyperacusis, so my brain is taking and processing in every sound at the same level. After all, none of us have an exact idea of what another person is hearing. I have no problem with any accent here. My television, in my formative years, here in the UK, had accents from all over the planet but my own - base sound - is RP English. It should be - because I am surrounded by it, less so these days - strongly Suffolk.

What’s great about being Northern Irish is that I can perfectly understand both thick Scottish accents and thick Irish accents perfectly since our accents are a blend of the two

When I first started watching it I had to have subtitles on but I’m on season two now and now I can understand it better. Occasionally hit a word that I’m lost on but it doesn’t dae me heid un. Piece a pesh.

Scottish myself and I'm always conscious of how I speak to people from other places so they can understand. If you were to hear a chat between myself and some workmates on an average morning you wouldn't pick up much of what was said haha. Kevin is a great comedian and worth watching but his specials are all filmed here so his accent will be strong in them
My friend and fellow Scot was getting his hair cut in San Francisco. The girl cutting it, an American, said that for a Scottish person his English was amazing. He said if she kept practicing she'd get there too. Before she'd finished the hair cut.

As a Scotsman who travels a lot I have a toned down accent mode. However, sometimes, when I'm tired or a bit grumpy its fuckin tedious talking to people who dont understand you, I just give up and keep myself to myself haha. (In English speaking countries that is)
(I'm English) When I was at college in London, I was on a course with someone from California and someone from Glasgow. I literally had to act as a translator.

Frankie boyle and kevin bridges great scots comedians and i have to say you hardly ever get distracted by the accents. Now if you want to see the greatest scottish comedian then billy connolly is the man and both these guys will confirm that. He cant do stand up any more as he has parkinsons disease now and so much of his sets where memory based as he could start one joke go off on a another and finish with the original joke. Comic genius. A thicker scottidh accent than both these guys put together. Try his terrorist attacks glasgow airport clip. Love this channel always brightens up my day thank you.
My uncle, who was from Scotland, told me about the time a neighbor who ran a boarding house came and asked him to speak with one of her new tenants who was from Scotland. She said, "Mr. Ferguson, I can understand you, but I can't understand him." My uncle said, "so I went in, and I couldn't understand a word he said either."
i've seen kevin live in glasgow and trust when i say this is him slow and speaking quite posh! lol
I worked in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s. A guy from South Carolina couldn't understand an Australian film on the flight on the way out, but understood the same film shown on the flight back home. After spending time with us brits. Had to explain that we had no problems understanding Americans, because we see all their TV programs in the UK, all the time. Don't understand why Americans can't tell the difference between British and Australian accents though. The film was "The Australian Light Horse".

I'm an Englishman and worked in Scotland a few years ago and could understand the scots I was working with, but when we went for a drink in the evening with them their accent got so strong I couldn't understand a word they were saying.
I realised they were trying to speak more clearly for us at work but when they had a few they couldn't give a flying fook.
Btw I thought I could drink a lot until I met the Scots.

I'm from Belgium and we speak Dutch (Flemish), French and a bit of German and I have no trouble to understand Kevin Bridges.
So to me it is uber weird that native English speakers have problems understanding him. 😆
I actually find as a fairly broad accented Scot I'm better understood in Europe than some parts of the UK . Also got on fine in Australia and New Zealand. America? jees that was hard going at times especially when I got drunk lol though thats the same everywhere. It makes sense though. Unless we are insensative idiots we try and slow down for non native English speakers plus many parts of Europe has had exposure to Scottish accents for years and after a while you get more and more used to it like Josh has.
Americans are just pretty ignorant when it comes to thick accents. I can understand pretty much every native English speaker apart from maybe thick Irish accents. But even then it’s only a couple words.

You seem to have a good ear for accents. Americans don't seem to understand many accents. You're refreshing.

His stand up videos are usually recorded in Scotland so he can talk how he would say to say but for a show like graham norton he needs to slow down and pronounce everything.

I've always thought as a Scot everyone claims they can't understand us but we generally understand everyone else in the English speaking world, and if we can't were not rude about it. So who is really the tube in that situation 🤔 🤣, open your ears listen and concentrate don't be a dick by just saying " i can't understand you "

My grandmother was born and bread Edinburgh Scotland. I grew up with that accent in our family. So I am used to it. Btw, I am born and bread Australian :-) We also have Irish and English in our family. Now I am married to a Filipino. And I have Swiss, German etc friends now. So I have gotten used to accents from all over the world. If you listen, you will always understand ;-)
Harry and Paul 'i saw you coming' is a great sketch from a comedy show. There are a few different ones but they are all based around the same topic. They are very funny!
Familiarity is everything with understanding accents. I'm not American, but I can understand you very well.

I never cease to be amazed by how much you can understand of these accents. I knew a few Americans and they almost always have problems with UK accents. You're doing brilliantly- keep it up.
I’m from the North of England and I’ve had Americans not believe I was English because of my accent.
Trouble is 35% of English people live in the London metropolitan area (city and the surrounding area). And that’s the accent most Americans are aware of.
I live on the border of Wales, inbetween London and Edinburgh. My entire county only makes up 2% of the entire English population.

When it comes to UK accents even we struggle. I'm from Manchester and when I meet my Newcastle ir; black Country, Scots etc it takes a few minutes to adjust. I think it's the rythm rather than the words. Meaning how the words flow into each other that is the way to decipher accents. Works that way for me. Think about it across the English speaking lands the words used are more or less exact. So then it's how they are put together in sentance that helps you to get them understood.

I'm from England and have a southern English accent. I was in the states a couple of years ago. I went into a subway to get some food and the assistant said "G'day".I said that's Australian, to which she said "your Australian aren't you?". Then a guy in front of me said " you sound south African to me". I think the average American needs to get out more, see the world and actually learn something.

Accents are absolutely about exposure. The more you hear it the easier it is to understand. I think American media is so huge that the American public don’t get a lot of exposure to different accents

How Glaswegians speak is a whole different ballgame than standard Scottish . In American terms it's like talking to a Cajun. You both speak English (mostly, there are French words scattered in how Cajuns speak) but if you don't hear it enough, you'd have a hell of a time understanding them. The trick with Glaswegian is to go in knowing that they speak fast, in no nonsense broad swearing terms (become familiar with the word bawbag or ball bag it's used quite often don't be surprised about it either, the literal one hurricane that hit Scotland was renamed by the Scots as "Hurricane Bawbag" I'm not lying that actually happened) and in a very lilting way. Ex. Gies a break man! I cannae go doon the road noo because the auld bawbag at number 20 is aft he's heed again. (translation: Give me a break! I can't go down the road now because the old a-hole who lives at number 20 is off his head again). Anyone interested, I'm thinking of starting a Scottish translation side hustle for UA-cam, not truly because of the money but because I feel for my fellow Scots who constantly have people writing in that they "can't understand them" and that they "need to speak English".

Some notes going in if you do choose to watch is that 'chippy' is short for chip shop, as in fish and chips, and tea is also a word used for dinner. So basically means chip shop dinner
I used to sit next to a Glaswegian for work for years. The problem was, he was also a mumbler. It taken A LONG TIME to understand it. But I think it made me a super translation for Accented English.
At my current job, we have people from all over Europe and Asia in our office and all speaking English, but the accents are all over the place. It's usually me who ends up having to be an intermediary.
Between Serbian who slurs their words and talks at the speed of light, to Indians who cannot pronounce Z.
All thanks to trying to understand a Scottish guy! (Though, when drunk, Not even I can understand him)

I HAVE READ THAT WHEN THE VIKINGS RULED BRITAIN THAT THE MAIN DIALECT WAS SCOTTISH, BUT I NEVER REALLY REALIZED HOW SIMILAR THEY ARE UNTIL LISTENING TO THIS GUY.
I'm not sure if Danelaw stretched to Scotchland. There's a lot of links between certain parts of Northern England with the Danish language, especially Yorkshire and the North East (Newcastle).

My dad's from Glasgow and in that city the accent ranges from cannot understand to easy to understand you tune in eventually then you actually sound like them without realising until you get home in England and everyone notices??
If you'd like to try your hand at understanding an even broader scottish accent (in a comedy show), try watching an episode of the "Rab C. Nesbitt".

I'm always amazed by the difficulty native English speakers seem to have understandning each other. I'm Swedish and I understand everyone of them fine. Granted, I do have some difficulty with heavy scottish accents, but not with this.
Same here, I'm Dutch and I can understand it as well. It amazes me as well how much difficulty Americans have with British accents. I guess it's matter of exposure. Over here in Europe we hear a lot more British accents on TV than in the US.

Definitely not. Kevin Bridges is easy to understand compared with some Glaswegians I’ve met.
If you liked that, try the SNL sketch "Scottish air traffic control" with James Macavoy about Americans and Scottish accents, it's brilliant. You are going to have to ask the comments section for help with some of that one. 😀
True story: Air traffic control asked an American pilot flying from Southern Ireland to Scotland what his location was. He replied: "We're just passing over ten-mile island." They were somewhat puzzled and then realised he meant the Isle of Man (on a map as IOM)!
