Honda....tends to be creative on weights, its cheaper than building a lighter bike. The AT full of fuel and no other add on's hits about 550lbs....that's Honda's view....in reality on certified scales they tend to weigh more...good solid bikes though!
I've owned 4 ktm's over the last 5 years. One was totaled in an accident with a truck. I still ride and enjoy the other 3. No serious problems with any of them. I like them so much that i gave them names.
Good review. I have the 2020 790 Adventure R, my first KTM. I’ve owned several bikes including a Honda and can objectively say the KTM has been the best and most capable bike I’ve owned so far. I’ve had zero reliability issues so far and have pushed my limits on this bike with many drops. I was between the T7 and the KTM 790 and know I made the best choice for me. The 890 is even better from the reviews I’ve seen, including numerous owners I’ve met. The bike inspires confidence.
The T7.......Yamaha wouldnt even take my deposit 3 months ago. And they still have no idea as to when bikes might happen. No Yamaha's are on local dealer floor....After looking at what all gets done to make a T7 close to right, and what an 890 comes stock with? I went 890-R. Ive had KTM dirtbikes since the 70's and all have been very good.
I knew you'd love the platform! The 790/890 are ridonculously awesome machines! Valve clearance check is 18k miles. Oil change interval is 9k. My experience with a 790 (very similar to an 890) maintenance and reliability-wise after 11k miles of riding is as such: Minor oil leak at 600 miles from counter-shaft sprocket seal - Replaced under warranty Minor oil leak from valve cover gasket at 7k miles - Fixed under warranty Minor coolant leak - Tightened coolant hose clamp Rear shock seal failure at 11k miles - Upgrading to a Touratech unit No other faults and man, I ride the crap outta this machine!
2 warranty claims in first 7k miles is pretty bad, but you don’t ride the piss out of it haha. Shock failure is also bad but again you ride it hard but the WP is supposed to be really good? Is it common on the Ktms that it fails? I upgraded to a touratech on my storm it’s amazing and you will love it but it’s concerning to hear you are having to upgrade as that was supposed to be already upgraded at least in my mind?
@@tennyis28 all ktms the first few years will have issues and you should be checking forums on what others are having problems with on your model. The oil leak and shock are a known problem for 790 adv. and ktm likes to sneak it updated parts and gaskets on newer models.

Definitely a nice bike. Can’t shake all the “concerns” about KTM tho. They really do seem to be hit and miss. I regularly ride with a few KTM owners/lovers and it seems that their machines are always in the shop 🤷🏼♂️

"people love to bitch". (690's over the years have had their issues,no doubt. I would have one except for that. I have an 890R on the way)
My 2012 KTM 350 has been problem free. I think it comes down to maintenance, like with most bikes. They do seem to engineer KTMs with ease of access to everything so working on them is easier, which is nice.
Coming from my 2017 crf1000 dct that I loved and took on many trails big bikes shouldn't go ever, but once I had a go of the 890 I was hooked, reliability is a concern only due to the scare mongering online, its definitely the bike for the more serious offroad riders
I know this video is old…But I finally sold my Africa Twin AS for a new 890R. You Norden videos sold me on the switch! Keep up the great content you’re putting out!!
Good seat of the pants review that the average guy can understand. I am afraid to test ride one though. My KTM 1190 R does what I ask it for now. The less weight part would be nice. But that engine... wow!
Nice Review& good points - yes, great power. I rode the 790 Adv R, vibration was a dealbreaker - did you find vibes through the handlebars/grips on the 890R? Reliability - you nailed it - a friend with 790R, in the shop 3 times with electronic gremlins. I read KTM is shifting production to China, also a concern. Yes, definitely a hi-tech and powerful bike, and super capable at the top of its class, but I think you made the better choice with the African Twin. I like Japanese reliability, but am also open to all brands.....but I erased this 890R from my short-list and also saved some $$ and just ordered a new Yamaha Tenere 700. Thanks for the video and keep the test rides coming! Cheers, Ronny
KTM is not shifting production to China. Hear say is still hearsay....AT is a huge bike, for sure not for everybody. They are sitting now on dealer floors due to mid size bikes coming out....Tenere needs 5K in set up to approach what a KTM comes stock with. Yamaha has no parts availability currently, and no bike availability with no idea whats next.
Having ridden my 790 across the US 3 times, I can tell you the worst thing about the bike is that windscreen. Also, unless it changed for the 890, valve check is 16 or 18000, not 9.
Yep ! The stock air flow sucks 😉, on my 790 Adventure I removed the two under headlight fairing “wings” (all of four screws) and use an MRA windshield. Airflow problem solved 😃🏍👍.

Have a 2020 790 Adventure R with almost 5k miles. Only issue is when cold takes three pushes on start button to run…consistently three pushes. No other problems whatsoever, and I ride it hard. Call it the Honey Badger cause it don’t give a sh#t; tarmac, gravel, total off-road, eats it up. Funnest motorcycle I’ve owned (it’s #17) over 40 years.
I also have a 2020 Adventure R and it will do the same thing. Read somewhere it has something to do with the cold engine mapping, but if you start it and blip the throttle right away a couple times it will stop it from dying. Works every time for me.
Thanks for the review. This video entices me to test ride a KTM if one ever comes my way. I live way far from any dealerships so that's not a likely opportunity. I want to be close (30 miles max) to a dealership/service center that can repair my bike. I know that limits my choices. That's why I ride a Kawi. Funny thing is - it never breaks....
I've been riding dirt bikes for a year and a half, almost 2 years and I was contemplating on getting this bike after I get my MC License or to get a small displacement bike, but I'm confident that I'll be trying to get an 890 Adventure R
I have a crf 250l and a Harley fatbob with the 103… looking into purchasing one of these and getting rid of those two bikes. Would the ktm be a too much of a jump from a 250 ? I want something I can go on longer trips with but still be able to go off road… would the ktm be manageable in your opinion. I have decent riding experience but still consider myself somewhat of a beginner . I love the ktm but don’t wanna get in over my head with power
Nice review. Ok need your opinion on the KTM VS your AT. I have a 2017 AT and love it. I am riding more highway than in the past with some gravel mixed in. As I get a little older (64) I do less gravel all the time. Just gravel roads and some jeep trails. If money was no object, would you want the AT or this 890? My biggest concern would be is it buzzy on the highway? I understand the knobby vibes but I'm thinking engine vibes. I had a 2015 800 GS that wore me out on long highway rides, where the AT is great. I am thinking about the 890 for one reason. It's lighter. But I don't want to give up the comfort on the highway. Here In AZ it's not unusual to cruise along at 75 plus and that is the AT's strength IMOP. Thanks and keep the content coming
I don't see any reason to switch to this from the AT, especially if you already have an AT and plan on spending less time on gravel and more on the highway. This is going to be more bike than you need (in terms of increased off road capability) and comes with increased maintenance costs and decreased reliability.
I also have a 2017 AT. AT fairing and wind protection is far superior than KTM and more aftermarket windshield options for AT. Check big rock Moto review of KTM 790 adventure R, Ian discusses inferior wind protection on the KTM.
@@bradsanders6954 I had some issues with the fuel lines having debris in them. And basically running out of fuel. Issues have been fixed and lines have been cleared. And so far so good!
The funny thing is those contracts where they say "you buy it if you crash it" are actually non-binding and a court will just throw it out. Dealerships have test drive insurance for a reason and its just a cost they have to eat. Heck, dealers charge you like 1000$ for just printing off some forms and filling them out, they can afford to pay for proper insurance.
The 890R is much less twitchy than my 2019 790 Adventure "S," especially off-road with no traction control in the South Florida sugar sand. XD I'm at 8 months and 4,700ish miles without any mechanical failures, though it was poorly assembled from the dealership I bought it from resulting in multiple things coming loose even from the first ride home...
Excellent review and video. I stumbled upon your video because I am starting to look at Adv bikes because they seem like a good all arounder and fun. With that said, my concern is that bikes like this are typically with high seats etc. Is there a lowering kit for this bike and how did it feel to you? I do not know how tall you are. Second, how would you compare a bike like this to Triumph 900, which has a lower seat that you can get with it. Have you test road a Triumph? I would be interested in watching some of your other test rides on similar bikes. How is your African-Twin? Thanks
Hey.. I'm trying to find out more about if it would make a good tour bike as far as longer distance riding.. not much out there.. also you compare the power but to what? I ride an mt09 atm and doubt it pulls harder then my bike.. what are you comparing the power to. Tia
After five years on two different 1290s (15 1290SA and a 20 1290SAR) I think I can answer your question. It's just like the 890 but bigger, Not intimidating at all. Probably the easiest bike to ride that I've ever owned. It also just happens to be a fire breathing monster when you turn the rider aids off and let it rip.
I’m curious about your fit on the bike and the wind protection. We have the same inseams, I’m 5’9” tall. I wonder how tall you are and if your relationship with the windshield height would be the same as mine. Is the buffeting on the highway bearable for a long run down the slab? The windshield looked short. Is the windshield adjustable or is a taller one available? Thanks!
I love my EXC-F350 but as my buddies have sold their enduro bikes I’m contemplating a move into an adventure bike and the 890 looks the goods. Just worried I’ll end up wanting to explore right single trail and end up getting stuck a lot but keen on your thoughts for single trail/ dense exploring in the Aussie bush. Cheers 🍻

Would have been nice if you walked us through the controls and the different displays on the bike. On the left side of the handlebars I saw a four arrow control panel.
. Wait until you try it in Rally mode! The throttle response is instant hard on. So much so you can hardly drive it in city stop and go traffic. It makes you beg for more.....
Why whine about electronics. If the traction control fails in bfe you just gave a motorcycle with no traction control. Other wise every other modern bike has ABS and EFI. So they all have the same potential failure points. If the display fails you just have a motorcycle with no display. Neither strands you in the middle of nowhere. If the debate us whether generally mechanical issues are more common on the KTM vs the Yamaha I think that is a debate worth bringing up. But not electronics. Besides those additional rider aids are Bosch. Not KTM. Different ergos. Sure. Valid debate. Just silly to see anyone say well the tenere is simpler. It really isn't. Not from an electronics standpoint. They left those features out for price point. There are 2 additional sensors basically and ECU logic. That is the major difference other than a TFT vs LCD display. And some switch gear on the handle bars to navigate the menus.
Kinda unfair to compare a brand new bike against an older model AT. I appreciate your enthusiasm but the AT is also exciting and loaded with tech. Certainly that KTM is a great bike. A bit of discussion on use cases that highlight the differences between bike would have, imho, improved your vid.
I can only compare it to what I know. I happen to have a lot of experience with a 2016 AT. I have 0 experience with any other model years so it would be irresponsible to speculate on how they might compare.
This looks and sounds like a really cool bike, but KTM feels like the new, snobby BMW rider choice. I'm not a fan of tons of "rider aids" either. I still think the Africa Twin is probably what I'll go for, ultimately, but that decision is a long way off, right now.
Why would I not want to ride my 890 on the hwy a long time? Hell... I rode my f650gspd 1-'s of thousands of miles... A bigger bike isn't always better on pavement.
@@DorkintheRoad I didn't think it was only 40 difference, but apparently with the tank down low you don't feel the weight. This or the T7 would be a great only bike IMO. Thankfully I can have 2 :)

@@TheJumpn You are correct, I misspoke on the weight. As far as the parking lot comments, I'm sorry you didn't find my stream of consciousness useful. I'll try to plan what I'm going to spontaneously feel and say while riding more carefully in the future.

Bought one a couple months ago. Awesome bike….but that hasn’t been without its problems sadly.
Which problems?
@@bradsanders6954 I had some issues with the fuel lines having debris in them. And basically running out of fuel. Issues have been fixed and lines have been cleared. And so far so good!
@@tacticooloutdoors360 I suppose dirty fuel can happen to any machine. I'm picking it up today wish me luck!
Is there any other colour on this bike? I like it orange as it is but just wondering...hug from portugal
DRZe = 322 lbs; AT = 502 / 535 cvt lbs; 890 AdvR = 480 lbs (your delta's are off = 140 lbs heavier than DRZ, 20-55 lbs lighter)
Want to ride from Pa to texas across new mexico bdr then home. How do you you think this bike would do for me
The 890R is much less twitchy than my 2019 790 Adventure "S," especially off-road with no traction control in the South Florida sugar sand. XD
I'm at 8 months and 4,700ish miles without any mechanical failures, though it was poorly assembled from the dealership I bought it from resulting in multiple things coming loose even from the first ride home...
Thanks
After watching your videos on the brozz 250 I was going to buy one but there are none in stock anywhere I looked.
Thanks!
Good questions. I have the same questions
Thanks.. cruise control?
I love my EXC-F350 but as my buddies have sold their enduro bikes I’m contemplating a move into an adventure bike and the 890 looks the goods. Just worried I’ll end up wanting to explore right single trail and end up getting stuck a lot but keen on your thoughts for single trail/ dense exploring in the Aussie bush. Cheers 🍻
Take it from a SDR owner, the 1290 is ludicrously fast. Putting around town is great but cracking the throttle is like jumping to warp speed.
I've heard they're crazy fast.
@@DorkintheRoad 161 mph in 5th.
@@DorkintheRoad I rode an 1190 for 40 minutes, and the ride ended talking to a CHP officer. Luckily he was the son of a friend and we had a good chat and went on our way. The 1190 only starts clearing it's throat at 120mph and is then really ready to get with it. Im 6' tall ,couldnt reach the ground, its a big bike to tip toe on............I couldnt quite see the point of it? But it was bitchin no doubt!
What is your feeling bee twin your norden and the ktm
If it weren't for my concerns on KTM reliability I'd have an 890 right now, but just too worried about having an issue. I've got a Super Tenere and a Tenere 700 and need to sell one..
Are you close enough to sell your T7 to me? 😁
@@DorkintheRoad hahaha I think you’re in Oregon?? I’m in Seattle. I love the T7 - it’s a concern over a chain and tube tires that are giving me anxiety that may be unwarranted. It’s a phenomenal bike. After riding the 575lb Super T, it’s amazing how much fun and how light the T7 feels
That's close enough. I'd be interested potentially if you're really looking to sell. They're pretty hard to get ahold of right now. I'd also completely understand if you wanted to hang on to it. Send me an email if you want to talk at all about selling. Dork @ dorkintheroad.com 😁
@@DorkintheRoad I’m still mulling - WA hasn’t even gotten the title to me yet. It’s got 750 miles and a lot of farkles. I called the DOL yesterday and they said likely August 8th-10th. I’m doing a solo trip to Redding, Ashland, Bend then home on August 18th so I gotta make up my mind 😂
Dont live scared! Branch out and try an orange bike! Ive had 15 of them at least since 1978.
Would have been nice if you walked us through the controls and the different displays on the bike.
On the left side of the handlebars I saw a four arrow control panel.
So why even do a vid then it’s basically pointless
I know you say you’re an intermediate rider at best in several videos, what do you think it would take to level up your skills?
Training, experience, and more confidence, mostly.
Hi.. U did not try the rally mode?? Thats when the respons/power are really intens. And u need to go offroad.
The tech package was not activated on this bike.
@@DorkintheRoad Oh... You need to test one whit the teck package then.. Then you will be a Ktm owner.;0))
I swear only bike reviewers complain about “buffering” it’s a bike who cares!!
People who film while riding and want to be heard.
You should have tried rally mode, it is another bike, in a good way.
How does this bike compare to the bmw f800 gs or gsa?
. Wait until you try it in Rally mode! The throttle response is instant hard on. So much so you can hardly drive it in city stop and go traffic. It makes you beg for more.....
Did you even get in 5th gear?
Wait wait wait. Is that power motorsports? Cause that’s where I bought my 890 from!
Africa twin felt big and heavy when I rode it. Street bike.
Valve checks are every 18,800 miles not 9k
Why would I not want to ride my 890 on the hwy a long time? Hell... I rode my f650gspd 1-'s of thousands of miles... A bigger bike isn't always better on pavement.
👍👍👍👍
What is the curb weight on the 890 r
... Weight (without fuel) 200 kg - 441lbs .
I wonder what it’s like on the highway the 690 enduro is terrible on the highway great bike off-road but
isn't it more like 125lbs heavier then a drz?
Actually more like 150, it looks like, but it doesn't feel like it.
@@DorkintheRoad I didn't think it was only 40 difference, but apparently with the tank down low you don't feel the weight. This or the T7 would be a great only bike IMO. Thankfully I can have 2 :)
That's the problem with doing these things off the cuff in limited time 😂😂
Quick google says 890 Adventure R is 464,wet. 2016 Africa Twin (1st gen like Dorks is 503 lbs)
That’s not 100 lbs. plus, maybe reserve some comments about being smooth until you get out of first gear in the parking lot.
@@TheJumpn You are correct, I misspoke on the weight. As far as the parking lot comments, I'm sorry you didn't find my stream of consciousness useful. I'll try to plan what I'm going to spontaneously feel and say while riding more carefully in the future.
Looking for info on suzuki dr200 enduros
Came to see any Squirrel comments. Leaving disappointed. 😢
Is it standard to have the national flag on every street lamp in the parking plot in America? So festive haha, never seen that before.
Go to the South, see the Confederate Flags flying . Freak show!
@@bradsanders6954 aha, fair enough if you love your country and you know it raise a flag (Y)
Sigh…we like to overcompensate here in the USA. National pride keeps us from demanding more.
Now try a KTM dualsport 350 or 500
