I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis when I was a younster in the mid-1970s. He could not have been kinder to a young cricket enthusiast and he did more than anyone to fuel my lifelong love of cricket. He was my sporting hero, and this comeback innings in 1976 was one of the greatest and most courageous performances I have ever seen. Top cricketer, top man.

My name on hero is dedicated to my hero Dennis Leslie Amiss- and i was fortunate enough to meet him on a cricket holiday organised by Chris Martin Jenkins in 1986 been my hero since i was 10 years of age in 1974. Top bloke top cricketer. Ironically the final time he passed 50 for England in a test match in the Centenary match against the Aussies in 77 with Lillee in full flight showed just what guts the man had.

a thoroughbred! i watched every ball of that innings and he did not play a single ball from the quick bowlers off the front foot - he had reengineered his whole technique after being mauled by Lillee and Thomson - that's strength of character for you. Roberts and Holding and Daniel and Vanburn Holder as well - the Oval like a sandy beach - what a summer that was - the summer of 1976!

It's fascinating to see Dennis Amiss moving back to play the fast bowlers. Very effective and just think how much things have developed. We now have Keaton Jennings, who doesn't move at all...

I remember this innings well at the time, I was 11. He had been given a real working over in the tour match when playing for the MCC. He went away and developed this method of a step back and across to get into line. Boy did it work. He scored 2 test double hundreds, both against the West Indies. Sound man. A shame he ended his test career by taking the Packer shilling, but players were not well paid then so cant blame him.

It wasn't until I watched these highlights that I was struck how similar the late Roy Fredericks' bowling action was to Sir Garry Sobers' (when bowling his left arm Chinamen)

Great innings & comeback by Dennis, considering the pressure he was under & the quality of pace bowling he was facing. I can't remember any other time when an English test ground has used the entire playing area with no boundary rope. It was also the quickest, driest English outfield I have ever seen so maybe that was the reason, to prevent too many easy fours.

super innings and a brave one facing the likes of Holding with no helmet

Its a possible, but by then he was batting down the order at Warwick and he had not played for England for nearly 5 years. I guess that's why he signed up to the SAB tour in early 1982.

He only moved down to number 4 in the middle of the 82 season. Fletcher is on record of saying he wanted Amiss both on the 81-2 tour and also at the start of the 82 summer. The first one he was outvoted and of course the second one he had been sacked as skipper. With Willis as captain and Boycott out of the way it may have been easier to get back in the side.. who knows...............

I think you'll find that Dennis Amiss was part of the rebel tour to South Africa in 1981-2 and therefore banned from International cricket at that stage. Also he would have been nearly 40 and with memories of the recall of Geoff Boycott a few years earlier they would probably have selected someone younger - but who knows.

@@JP1234815 to clarify my comment Fletcher did a newspaper interview in Feb 82 before news of the SA tour broke saying he wanted Amiss in the England side that summer should he (Fletcher) retain the captaincy as Boycott had basically been sent home in disgrace. As we know Fletcher was sacked and Amiss went on the tour

I often wonder would he have got back in the side as a stop gap in 1982 had he turned down the South Sfrican tour cash. With Gooch and Boycott out of the way Barry Wood played in the one day internationals against India that summer before Cook and Tavare opened in the tests. i think he possibly would have done. As for taking the Packer shilling he has since been on record as saying he may not have made the same decision in hindsight.
