Either he isn't, or he trained in the wrong thing for self defense, because your hands are the only weapon you can always have with you. It's great to know how to fight with several things, but he makes it sound like his only goal is self defense. I personally think that training in self defense primarily with a weapon that you might not be able to have if you get attacked is a stupid thing to do. That is, if it's the only thing your being trained in.
