I was introduced to terry bogard in capcom vs snk 2 but I truly fell in love his character is through specially smash bros and comics dub. His character is amazing and shows so much positivity around him and recently the fatal fury movies and it captures his personality (my opinion). Overall terry bogard is strong character in fighting games

The thing i like most about the whole "why terry is so scared of having a relationship" is that i think that whole plot line is strong enough to function even if you dont add a love interest on Terry's story on the first FF events.
not only its the totally canonical reason why Blue Mary doesn't tries to take their relationship a step further, i think that in a way, its one way to tell or at least make the spectator say "maybe Terry feels the same", the mere fact of having to struggle against the death of his adoptive father is enough reason to make him feel scared of having any deep bond with anyone else. in my opinion it even looks like he doesnt have the most wholesome and stronger bond with Andy, Joe or Rock, of course he loves them but i dont know, he really looks like he paints his line with them, just usually talking with them about fights and tourneys and become stronger. Or maybe im delusional.
Even tho, as i said, it makes 100% sense that he is scared of building a romantic relationship, because he doesn't thinks he is emotionally strong enough for that, and his feelings of dread wouldn't let him feel safe.
I think COTW is the best opportunity to allow him some growth in that field, he's got friends, and some sort of a family with Rock, to slow down and enjoy the breeze, to show he's over revenge, to forgive himself from not saving Geese. To pass the torch.
I seriously appreciate your dedication to SNK and these characters. My favorite thing about SNK is how “extra” they are with their seemingly stereotypical fighting game characters. I absolutely adore the SNK character sound collections and their various other CD dramas, the anime and manga adaptations of their games, the really crappy NEOGEO Guys song collection, all the bizarre merchandise with their characters (ie. KOF branded hand sanitizer), and so much more. I think it’s pretty cool how much SNK put into these characters outside of their actual games.
Anyways, this video is great and I would love to see a 40+ minute video about Obari and the origins of Terry’s metal plate hat from the OAVs, please and thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it man! Yeah, SNK really poured some heart into their classic characters. Makes it all the sadder how they've become a little sterile as of late. There's deeper reasons for me loving Terry as much as I do and I was itching to discuss them so I'm glad this vid is out there.
As for his hat....uhhhhh...Terry joined a metal welding class in school and etched the words "fatal fury" into a cap plate because he thought it sounded cool

Love Terry Bogard. I've watched many videos on his background story n I always love ppl who talk about it. Phenomenal video!
I took Terry trying to save geese a little differently. I think Terry was thinking of his own mental state. He was fucked up after the first time when he thought he killed killed geese. Led him to becoming the empty drunk we saw in the second movie. He became himself again, only to have Krauser suicide in front of him. Now geese is about to die for real this time, so he attempts to save him because he already knows where his mind will take him if geese dies.
As for canon character death in non canon movies. I think they killed off cheng shinzan to put an end to a generation (in the anime). Tung died in the first movie. Terry's dad was already dead. Geese was thought to be dead. Cheng shinzan was a student of tung and was friends with Jeff and geese. By having him die, the only remaining legacy of tung were Terry and Andy - except geese was still alive.
Speaking of Andy, his fighting style and character design always confused me, because even though he trains in a Japanese style, he dresses like a southern style kung fu practitioner and bows using a Chinese bow.
You mentioned tung dying in the movie being weird. They actually corrected that in game. In one of the KoF games, in game dialogue between Terry and Chin gentsai, chin sends condolences for tung's death, and Terry replies that he isn't dead.
These sort of character video essays are what I live for. Like even if I saw millions of them on the same character and I know the character by heart, having a nice half an hour video to listen to with a different lens on my favorite characters is good content for my ears. I've always felt Fatal Fury 3 was more of a "cinematic" take on Fatal Fury. Like if you were playing through a movie/OVA plot.
There's a lot of dialogue between characters and cutscenes, the music feels more cinematic, like something out of a martial arts action movie (and the only songs that feel upbeat like Big Shot are played through a boombox or other means)...It's an odd feeling.
Makes sense considering they had that very cheesy martial arts movie type commercial for it as well

I don't think the final secret of Hakkyokuseiken was ever revealed in the actual game canon. Considering the art really is just energy control and not a fighting style, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the hulking thing Tung does. I'd kill to see Jeff come back in KOF and start hulking out...
Speaking of KOF, surprised you didn't touch on it considering Terry's arc seems slightly different in that timeline. Namely he seems to have overcome his personal issues in the early games you addressed much earlier, if he even went through them at all. Also he and Mary seem much more of an item in KoF as well (especially in a few endings), whereas he doesn't seem to take that leap in the FF timeline until that last scene in Memories of Stray Wolves.
All in all, a really interesting deep dive into the character!
You're right, the final technique itself doesn't exist in the games. I think they just vaguely describe "secrets of the art" that Tung only teaches Jeff. I used to headcannon that Power Geyser was Terry's own way of utilizing the secrets of hakkyokuseiken, as he only uses it after FF1 in the games.
Yeah, I didn't really see much of a point in talking about Terry in KOF. While there is some interesting stuff like him being seemingly closer to Mary in it, at the end of the day it's not his home series and I don't think "KOF Terry" is the "true" Terry.

@@JohnSexDD if Fatal Fury is to have a reboot, I really believe that they need to explore more of the Hakkyokuseiken lore especially with regards to Tung, Terry, Geese, Jeff and even Cheng, as he’s hinted as having some importance to the world of Fatal Fury, but it’s never been capitalised.
@@JamalService2000 Yeah, Cheng is always looming in the background and seems to know everything. Trained with Jeff and Geese, told Joe Terry lost in the second OVA, knew Geese was still alive in 3, what is the deal with this guy?
@@JohnSexDD when I was younger and did a Garou motw sequel fanfic, I always pictured Cheng as an underworld influencer, dabbling with illegal shit but not evil and had ties with some very important info. I’ll need to send you some chapters of that at some point.

I know wild ambition isn’t most people’s first choice but I loved it. And I believe that is the game where they said mr karate (takuma ver) fought and lost to Jeff but geese immediately fought Jeff afterwards while already winded. I liked this idea because I felt it helped correlate to kraiser when the kid said Terry was already winded from his first fight. Meanwhile geese didn’t care about winded or not. He’d take the win period. It showed what a desperate man geese was for his own personal pursuit of revenge. Also showed how far takuma had strayed. I felt it helped motivate him to turn on geese which provoked yuri kidnapping. And ryo anger toward a kyokugen fake hurting their rep as rumors were spreading. It kinda tied a neat bow between aof and ff.

This kind of depth, thought, passion, and research into a character is something I not only live for, but have mad respect for. I feel like I relate with my love for Hsien-Ko and Mei-Ling, two characters from Darkstalkers, a fighting game. While there are not as many games to draw from to craft a headcanon based on what is officially made in games, it is fun still to take what little is there and get what I can from outside media to help forge an idea of what those are two are like.
My waffling aside, this is a well crafted character essay that insightful and informative in such a way I relate. Your love for this character permeates in a way that is charming and incredible. Mad respect Mr. Sex. I look forward to your future videos. 😊

So here we go....the unwritten technique passed down secretly by masters of the Hakkyokuseiken school is actually Senpuuken (Hurricane Punch).
The ascended version of that move is the Hadousenpuukyaku (Super Hurricane Kick).
Maybe you mispoke but at 6:25 you mention the secret technique taught by Tung Fu Rue to Terry Bogard as Senpuukyaku.

Well i have a theory about terry that no one thought about yet but hear me out ok. What if terry and andy's father was all along geese howard but never knew? Meaning remember jeff picked them up as orphans and there was no mention or story of their mother. So what if their mother was young geese's wife and after they parted she raised terry on her own while keep trying be with geese and bared andy but he never wanted to claim them as his children so she raised them as a single mom. But geese never met them or care who his children were. As she past they had to struggle on their own entering the jeff bogard situation raising them and whom ironically was the rival of their father geese. And since they never met their father they bonded to jeff and trained with him. But the fact both brother's were fighters in nature due to their father being geese is why the were good students like geese only difference was geese is power hungry while terry and andy were nature and fact their adopted father was by him (not knowing geese was their grue father ever) the trained to beat him for revenge for jeff. Yet what makes me think this really more is the ability they had battle geese (like darth vader finding about luke but never figuring out he was his son along) is why they kept bumping heads cause dad can't bet jeff now can't beat his own son either. Here comes to play the rock theory not only terry feels guilty killing geese rock's father (in theory his and andy's father as well) is why terry picked him up and trained him not out of guilt only but felt like rock was like him abandoned and alone much like him as jeff picked him up but also like their father killing a him and having them abandoned so like his step father jeff he picks him and trains him yet treats him like a younger brother (cause he is his brother but terry and andy plus rock never knew geese was really their father the whole time) which is why rock not only learned terry's move set but cause it was in their blood this whole time to be fighters from geese yet trained from other masters though jeff was their first master yet tong fo rue was his and geese's master then andy trained under jubei and rock under terry so basically they all were geese's sons who bested they own father and went down his path as fighter's but not for power like jeff. Thats my theory which is rock's story is about his mom might find out that terry's mom and rock's mom might be alive and the same person but she abandoned terry and andy or died or lost her memory and forgot she bare them ad her children and her and geese had rock as his true 1st born when it was Terry and andy all along. Yet terry still takes the role of big bro to rock until he finds out the truth that terry killed geese the whole time and both terry and andy one day find out geese was their true birth father all along. That's my theory

Or Geese had another brother, which is not Krauser, and he was the father of Terry, and Geese was the father of Andy, making Terry and Andy adoptive brothers and biological cousins? Rock would be Terry's adoptive son and biological cousin, and Andy's adoptive nephew and biological brother.
And unlike Geese and Krauser, their other brother was a great and kind man, who loved his wife and son very much, which Terry inherited from, like Andy inherited some of Geese's bad traits.

Back then SNK gave characters birthday since the timeline of the Fatal Fury/AoF/Samsho games are actually moving forward, unlike the floating timeline of KOF.

@@JohnSexDD fatal fury is more consistent on the character's evolution. Ryo became Mr. Karate 2 and it is implied at the end of AOF3 that Robert and Yuri hit it off. Terry started as a brash young man who is obssessed with revenge to a mellowed father-figure to Rock. In KOF they just want to keep the characters in their prime.
Well Kyo did have an evolution character-wise, he went from a cocky high school teenager into a cocky high school drop out so theres that.

I think you reaching to the motion picture to explain Terry's relationship with Mary is a bit of a stretch... more so than your other theories.
Terry's spent his life traveling and training to fight one guy, filling his heart with anger and all the other stuff you talked bout. He just never learned how to talk to girls in a mature way. It's why he still acts like a goofy 13 year old around girls, smacking their buts and what not. He doesn't know what to say or how to move forward with a girl he actually likes. Those are emotions he never got around to learn how to deal with.
