My CSM Fashion Communication : Fashion Journalism Portfolio (Tips & Tricks)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- With everyone asking me how I got into CSM (Central Saint Martins) a college under UAL (University of the Arts London), I thought this would be a good video to make to explain what I put in my portfolio and why. I also explained the application process when applying to study fashion communication : fashion journalism at CSM.

The fact that you went the extra mile, doing your research and understanding what make good portfolio shows that you are very dedicated to your work. And all I got to say is keep it up 👍 your doing great work.
We agree
Coming back to this video after being accepted onto Fashion Journalism at CSM, and I can now say without shame that I have scoured this video at least 50 times prior to my interview and portfolio consideration. This was essential! Thank you so much :)
Man you need to make a podcast version of your channel! Your voice is really good and you have a really good calm flow. Which is important because I feel like you do your homework and have alot of actual content about the behind the scene and history of brands and the designer at those brands at that time. I can listen happily for hours.
That's a great idea
In america, fashion schools keep journalism and fashion a separate major so I am super jealous yours is combined! I had to double major in fashion merch and journalism!
Wow that seems like super hard work. I’ll count myself lucky.
thank you for sharing this,, ive been so curious
No problem
Yo, your portfolio is good stuff, so I'd like to give some quick suggestions on improving its presentation.
1. Font: Avoid using all caps and a condensed font style for paragraphs. It's relatively hard on the eyes.
2. Intro page: It's nice that you tilted the text to give it some quirkiness, but it's a little too much; it's borderline affecting readability.
3. Photography page: I'm guessing that you placed the images this way to avoid looking rigid and dull but it looks rather disorganised. Make a layout of where your texts and images will be on the page first. Group relevant paragraphs and images together.
Anw it's mostly nit-picking but I'd just like to share some thoughts.
I understand the feedback but going back to the research I did before my interview:
1.) At CSM they prefer an “arts and crafts” aesthetic to a portfolio as opposed to a professional one. So a CSM fashion journalism portfolio will look completely opposite to the traditional journalism portfolio. The main reason for this is because fashion magazines have loads of different layouts.
2.) Punctuation in my portfolio wasn’t important when it was clearly obvious that it was done deliberately for aesthetic reasons. Many well respected fashion magazines have image lay-outs of various types. I came with loads of written work to showcase my writing skills.
3.) You can not judge how readable my portfolio is based on reading it in tiny text on a screen on UA-cam to a high quality A-4 printout that was handed in.
Ultimately all these factors lead to me gaining a place on the course. This video is coming from a successful applicant not a prospective one.
@@FashionRoadman Yeah I was giving general portfolio suggestions from a designer perspective, so perhaps it isn't completely applicable for fashion journalism.
When it comes to portfolios, my assumption is that it's gonna follow you through your career; it's something you'd want to constantly improve on for life. If that's not how portfolios work for fashion journalism then you can ignore the suggestions lol
In the end, my suggestions were as a friendly gesture, not a critique. Even as someone outside the fashion industry, I can tell that you've planned and executed your content well. Was just giving my two cents on simple ways to make an already good work even better. But yeah, that's provided you'd be reusing this portfolio.
I totally understand I was also just giving my two cents ❤️. My portfolio will change with every application and I always tailor portfolios to the application hence why all my applications for all the 4 universities I applied to were different.
@@FashionRoadman I see. 👍

Well deserved place at CSM and that’s cool what your intentions are. A PR i worked for actually did an event at a concept store in covent garden (closed down now) on Lagos fashion week showcasing talent from that region and i got to meet Omoyemi Akerele 😁
Yooo that’s amazing
Clear and concise 👏great advice
Ps. As a designer myself, its great when fashion journalists understand the garment making process. You're then able to see something that seemingly appear simple but is actually complex. I'm looking forward to more of your journalism work. 💫
Really wish I had this resource when I applied for university years ago, so helpful!
Damn man this takes me back to my high school days when I had to prepare portfolios for my fashion uni as well lmao, really great video man really invested in your journalism journey!
Well done. it's very generous of you to take the time to guide young people like this. All of the best with your studies
I am so excited for you. You will be a great addition to CSM
Thanks! I hope I achieve great things when I’m there
Trying to apply fashion communication next year and you have no idea how helpful your video is to me!!!! Thank youXx
Glad I could help
This is really helpful, thanks for sharing. I got to the interview stage but had no idea what to expect and now I have realised I made the mistake of having a very long portfolio and didn’t do nearly enough research
Definitely keep your head up high. Everything is a learning experience
Thank you for sharing this, you dropped a lot of gems! Even for somebody not necessarily going into studying a fashion degree. Appreciate this a lot
I like the way you are technical with all the detail
Thanks for sharing man very useful tips right here, good luck on your journey
Happy for you bro⚡️
❤️
Excellent and intuitive presentation, you did a good job, I love it and just listening to you makes me really interested in what you're saying.
❤️

❤️
Great information, thank you for sharing
I'm happy for you fam,
❤️
This feels so intimidating. I’m just starting to engage in this realm and I’m very scared right now. If anyone has got any advice on how to navigate through this, like getting to thoroughly learn about all of the mainstream designers [I know this is probably something I should already know]. I just really need some help.😪🤧
I had to do an interview as well for my fashion design degree
Thank you so much for this video! I'm applying for 2021 and this video is very helpful
i'm excited to see/meet you when you join next year!! see you soon

Watching this now as I'm applying for the same course, so helpful thank you. Was wondering what you created your 800 word article in as I'm currently creating mine and love your layout. Thank you!

This was the article I wrote. Hope this helps
got my interview today : )
Just seeing this but I hope it went great ❤️
thanks this was really helpful
Thanks man for the tips 🙏🏽
this is urgent so hopefully someone replies to this in atleast 24 hours! but in the 800 word essay, r u able to use various photos from the internet or does it specifically have to be ur own?
As this is your second degree are there any student loans available or are you self funded ?
Self Funded
I'm hoping to apply for Fashion Journalism at CSM this year, with the covid situation I'm not sure how much (if any) experience I could do, how much independent work should I complete in the 3-4 months I have to gain a fair chance? I'm planning on making a fashion zine, a few examples of written work and photography, however I'm not sure if that would be enough?
same but honestly i think if your 18 and due to covid they probs will be more understanding. Ive left it soo late to start my blog and stuff i only wanted to do this course like 2 months ago lol
So much better than the last one ☝️
Btw to get into uni it doesn’t matter what u did beforehand as long as u got the grades
cant imagine the channel didnt help. Idk what CSM's journalism program is like but I wonder if they might try to "push" u into broadcast
I guess we will just have to wait and see
Thank you for sharing!
Just wondering, is this your first degree? Reason being that I'm currently an undergraduate, and I'll be 24/25 when I graduate. I'm considering trying to enter a career in the fashion business side, so I'm wondering if doing another degree is worth it, or if I'd be better off doing a Graduate Diploma.
I studied Chemical Engineering before this
Hey! I recently got the conditional offer for MA in Fashion Journalism at LCF, and I need to have a 2.1 in graduation to be accepted fully, do you know how much percentage would that be? I got 50% and I'm not sure if they're going to accept it, the worst case I will never be able to apply for a MA at UAL :(
Great video men thanks
Hi, I'm studying fashion communication in NIFT (India), currently in my second year. I have a question- you mentioned that you learned draping techniques and garments construction which gave you a slight edge. Now, I've to choose a subject for my minors, the subjects I'm confused between is Master of fashion management (MFM) and garment construction and draping techniques. Earlier, i thought maybe MFM which is related to the retail sector will be a better option but the way you said about garment construction and stuff gave me a new perspective. Can you help me out with this?
I’d say follow the original path you wanted. I learn how to construct garments outside of the classroom (through classes, apprenticeships and internships). From what I know, employers in the fashion industry prefer varied experience anyway.
Yooo ID on that jacket please, it's so dope
It’s literally from Taobao
interesting i wonder if this applies to design portfolios in terms of keeping it at a minimum
I don’t know much about fashion design portfolios so definitely don’t apply this information for design
Thanks for you sharing ! really appreciate the specifc details in your portfolio .Otherwise, I am caught between fashion jounalism and fashion critical studies in CSM,do you have any idea in the other major?
im really interested in the course but i dont have experience do u think i stand a chance?
If by experience you mean no written work then no haha. You can’t apply to a journalism course without a lot of written work. That being said, it’s very easy to build a catalogue of written work and then reach out to publications to get your work published so don’t be too down on yourself
Amazing video
Could you link us to the video where you were a guest for showstudio? I missed the video

Thanxs for sharing your views
I’m currently writing my 800 word piece of work. I’m currently writing it in word as I was unsure of where else to write it. Do you think that would be okay?
Word should be fine
The Fashion Archive thanks so much! This video has really helped me out!
@@annawatson5534 glad I could help
did u take your portfolio on ur laptop or physical ?
I took a physical version
Great video
Hi I had a question, when CSM ask you to submit the 800 word article on PebblePad are you supposed to just submit the article or the whole portfolio then?
How did u land the internship at Deploy?
ua-cam.com/video/HgH_Z2PYNEg/v-deo.html ❤️
hey what month is the interview normally?
Thanks for the video! I’ve been offered a place but I’m kinda nervous - how are the tutors overall?
Why did you choose to do a BA instead of MA?
Because I feel like my writing skills need work
im barely starting your video, but my biggest concern is im applyed for classes at this community college, majoring in Journalism, for associates, would this still give me a chance into fashion journalism? Although its not a fashion school…
