Took a class with you when you were in Asland Or. I remember going into your studio with you and you were working on an abstracts with a fery in the center and thinking i wished i were as talented. I've been painting ever since. Thank you for the inspiration.

Mary Anderson, the reason for the two way conversation is that this demonstration as well as others that we put on UA-cam were originally a Facebook Live stream demo. Live stream is where people watch AS we are filming. The audience an us interact in live time and ask questions and make comments. Since Gary can not see the comments on the camera screen, I have to relay the questions and comments onto him, as they come in during his demonstration. We spent 34 years doing our National PBS tv series .That was free to the public but we also Never got paid to do over 450 of those shows .With the new technology of live streaming and UA-cam,we can still offer free painting demos to the public. What medium did you use with oils? And did you cover over the white acrylics with the same medium ? Please answer soon...6/23/19. thanks... wonderful works of art...
Gina TexasGirl ,the medium I use is linseed oil and odorless thinner.About 50/50. When I use acrylic for a background,I sometimes brush on a very thin coat of the medium over the Acrylic. Then take a paper towel and wipe most of the medium off before you begin to paint the flowers with oil paint . By applying medium on top of the dry Acrylic ,this will allow the oil paint to spread easier.
Gina TexasGirl I sometimes just use odorless thinner to thin my oil painting and sometimes I use a combination of one half thinner and one half linseed oil. There is not a set formula for everything I paint.
Teresa,If you are using Black Acrylic on a background,the background will be dry. So when you use oil paint on top of that,the colors will automatically pop. One reason is the oil colors will not be picking up any of the dry black Acrylic and they will not become muddy. Also ,working with a dry black Acrylic background, and then putting bright oil colors on top of it, it becomes a HIGH CONTRAST painting. Strong darks against bright lighter colors. High contrast paintings always have more pop. You can also use Black oil paint for backgrounds, but then the black would have to dry first,so it doesn't muddy the top layer of oil colors. Kathwren

Anthony Lindsey there is no set rule that compliment colors need to be used in shadows. I paint with feeling ,not with strict rules . Any there are many rules that can be broken ,even though I have never heard of that one. Painting is all about experimenting. I have had 4 years of a full time formal art academy training ,plus over 50 years of a full time professional art career. Taught thousands of week long seminars all over the USA and in Germany, produced dozens of DVDs, produce an online painting course, produced many painting packets, have dozens of my paintings put into print and sold by a large international manufacturer ,plus produced my own national PBS Weekly TV series from 1983-2015. Hey Deelip, That's reflective light I always work outside the box. When one is painting and trying to explain what I am doing I might overstate things just to get my point across.
I think the two way conversation is distracting. It takes away from concentration on what you are teaching us. Just love Gary or Kathwren talking to us. Sorry, just my opinion.
