    Thank You so much, Sam! As a former military surgeon with ample experience in trauma management as well as the terminal ballistics of wounding, I find your "Jug-orNot" technique both practical and appropriate. I had already decided to use 100gr S&W Long hard lead wadcutters in my wife's 327 LCR for self defense because of the minimal recoil and you have vindicated my decision! Keep it up! I've become sort of a .32 afficionado with several revolvers and a Henry carbine in 327 Fed Magnum.

      I did a video about that too. Where I stated what the best handgun cartridge is for carry. I said .327 Mag, and the simplified answer is that it has 9mm terminal ballistics and then some, more accurate and easy to shoot at any range and less recoil than .357 Magnum, all while fitting in the pocket.

    Thank you for these .32 S&W Long tests! It's one of my favorite cartridges for all the reasons you've discovered in your tests. I always suspected it would hold its own against similar .38 spl loads, but with lighter recoil and typically an extra shot on board. Glad to see .32 S&W Long getting the respect it deserves. There's a reason it was pretty much the #2 choice in Law Enforcement circles behind the .38 spl. for many years. Simply put, it works and isn't punishing to shoot.

      I dunno. Revolvers in general are pretty low on the scale of popularity, now if the .327 Mag starts to take off again, I could see the .32 Long start to get popular as it's a great target round, turns the recoil into a .22!

      @@GunSam I think people are going to start gravitating to the .327 more with things like 7 shot snubbies. Charter Arms came out with a 7 shot 3" barrel .32 H&R magnum. Also idk why so many people are focusing on capacity of semi autos. Every time I draw from the holster I can do it much quicker with a chunky revolver handle than with a semi auto. That with the fact that if someone is already in my face there is no slide to go out of battery. I just feel more comfortable for close encounters with a simple revolver. I stick to Rugers and Charters for as few moving parts as possible.

    hi Gun Sam greetings from a fellow (former soon to be again) Michigander! The first Handgun I fired in my youth was a Revolver. I became near expert with it as I fired it constantly, I got to the point where at close range I could shoot out the 3 points on a playing card (clubs). I then became a huge advocate of Auto Pistols. As the years have gone by I got back into Revolvers. I have always been a HUGE fan of the .32 Cal family of Cartridges. I have TWO .32 S+W LOng Revolvers BOTH are 3 inch Barrels. I have long known the advantages of Wadcutters. Buffalo Bore makes excellent ammo and I mainly carry Wadcutters in my .32,s. I wish Ruger would make their LCR .32 w/ a 3 inch barrel but since they offer the sp101 in that configuration I doubt they will. As I reload I LOVE that Revolvers do NOT hurl the brass all over when fired especially when you consider I reload for .32 S+W LONG. As a side note I have for my EDC a Kel-tec p32. Here in Florida it is a very practical choice given the hot weather. LOVE your videos! What part of Mich are you in may I ask?

    I’ve been a fan for a bit but was brought to the .32 by Lucky Gunner’s .32 videos. It took me a while to find a nice S&W 32 J-frame. Found a snub in the local pawnshop for trade and then a NIB 3” J-frame online. I bobbed the hammer and smoothed the trigger face on the snub. Badger Grips and it’s good to go. The only downside is you have to be really diligent in your maintenance in hot/humid environments. After some yard work, a good bit of Ballistol comes in handy to neutralize the sweat. I’ve learned to not wait to spray it down to avoid rust. A Ruger may soon be my summer yard work carry revolver.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 роки тому +1

      Funny thing with the rust, and I actually had a friend prove this to me- that if you live in a humid environment all year round, which I do here in Michigan, it's almost as if your steel adapts to it. I had a friend bring all his guns from Colorado where there's little humidity, and they all started to rust on day one while the guns already here would not. Just a funny thing probably not supported by science, but I saw it happen!

    • @ammoiscurrency5706
      @ammoiscurrency5706 5 місяців тому

      The wadcutter is great but these are hard cast buffalobore watcutters with a little extra speed behind them. A lot of standard off the shelf wadcutters will greatly outperform 22lr but you'll be looking at closer to 8"-10" penetration. It's not uncommon for 32 wadcutters in a snubby to be 580fps-700fps and that 800+ is where the magic really happens for self defense. For punching paper, squirrels, rabbits, grouse and ground hog the 32 wadcutters are all fantastic

  • @mkshffr4936
    @mkshffr4936 3 роки тому +5

    One thing I have noticed is that penetration is not always proportional to velocity even with minimal or non-expanding bullets. Lower velocity rounds must be retaining enough momentum to still have adequate penetration but sacrificing some tissue damage early in the wound track. Still some advantage to respectable velocity but maybe not as critical as one might expect.

      Thank you. I would say that a .327 Mag or .32 H&R revolver is not a bad option as both can fire .32 S&W Long ammo, and .32 S&W Long seems to always have ammo available somewhere with a price that's not too bad. There's not a lot of .32 H&R Mag target ammo if any, neither is there for .32 S&W(short). The .327 Mag has practice ammo but that's a lot of recoil. The .32 S&W Long almost exclusively comes in 50 round boxes of target ammo, all for around $20 a box. Maybe 10-20% more cost than .38 Special, but not enough difference to be a deal breaker.

      If you scour the interwebs you can find a surprising variety of .32 S&W Long offerings and .32 H&R Magnum as well. I wouldn't say it is economical compared to 9mm or .38spcl. Handling would be better, though and you can match or come near the performance of 9mm or .38spcl without sacrificing manageability as much.
      If you've no plans to shoot .32 H&R +P or .327 Federal, check out the Charter Arms Professional. A 7 shot, .32H&R revolver with a 3" barrel, a 22oz weight to help soak up a bit more recoil than an LCR (17oz), and a great sight picture with a wide rear notch and green lightpipe up front. DA/SA via a traditional revolver hammer. It's not as concealable as an LCR, but it has a great handling feel that is well balanced. I'm strongly considering one to add to my collection. It's a very nice piece.

      I carried a .357 Mag 2" SP101 at one point, so it's a good gun. The advantage of the SP101 over the LCR is you can carry more powerful ammo to soak up recoil easier. The downside is you really can't pocket carry it as where an LCR you can.

      If I had to guess, buffalo bore standard pressure is just as hard on a gun as typical+p. There's more than just pressure at work. Heavy recoil/power really slams the parts like the crane around. Aluminum on aluminum is probably not good with that much jolting around.

    In a Snub revolver I personally LOVE the .327 Fed Mag Ruger LCR and recommend this caliber as a "family" first center fire handgun. Why? Novice and recoil shy shooters can easily handle the S&W .32 Long cartridge (about the same recoil as 22 Mag with a smoother trigger and Buffalo Bore makes an outstanding wadcutter load), while the full power .327 Gold Dot is more manageable than a .357 Mag recoil wise for the more experienced shooter.

    I don’t feel like there is any reason to use the Buffalo bore over the Winchester super x 148 grain wad cutter. It’s diminishing returns after like 800 fps. It's an interesting thing. Yes .32 H&R is typically more in the standard pressure .38 Special energy range, yet when comparing the evolution of calibers, .32 S&W Long is more along the lines of the same history and current available ammo as what the .38 Special is. It's pretty fair timing of history to compare .32 S&W to .38 Short Colt, .32 S&W Long to .38 Special, .32 H&R Magnum to .357 Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum to .357 Maximum. I left out .38 Long Colt, but the .38 Long Colt really isn't anything other than a heavier version of the .32 Short Colt. Anyhow, the .32 H&R Magnum seems to be left out a lot in history and as well as left out in ammunition manufacturing. You see 10 times the amount of ammo variety with .32 S&W Long as you do with .32 H&R Magnum.

    I have always felt that wadcutters might be quite effective if cast a bit soft and loaded to full velocity. They would probably expand a little (38 expanding to, say, 48-50 cal, just a bit less than the old LSWCHP's), and make an effective hole. BB also makes full wadcutter "antipersonnel" loads in 44 Spl and 45 Colt, and they tend toward the heavy side 250 and 260 gr i think). Those sound quite interesting. They need to be full power though, not target level handloads. There is more than 1 story of a person walking into an ER with 5 or 6 of those lodged in their chest, not far under the skin. No thanks. Lead bullets seem to be good at smashing bones too.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin 4 роки тому +2

    It seems to me that even though these are both target loads, the 38Spl would be quite usable for self defense. It seemed to carry enough energy to produce an exit wound. Two holes are better than one! ;-)

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 роки тому +4

      These are actually marketed as defense rounds pretty much. Here's what BB themselves say: Item 20D utilizes a very hard cast 150gr. WAD CUTTER bullet. The bullet is made hard, so it won't deform or mushroom. It cuts/crushes a "cookie cutter", full diameter hole in human flesh just like it does on a paper target. It penetrates deeply (roughly 14 to 16 inches in human tissue) and its full diameter profile maximizes blood loss as it cuts and crushes (not slips or slides) its way through tissue. Although I've never been shot with a full profile wad cutter bullet, I must assume that the initial impact of that wide flat nosed bullet, is crushingly formidable. As a teenager, I took to the woods on a regular basis and killed many a critter with heavily loaded 38SPL wadcutters'. The effect of a full profile wad cutter on small game was obvious and amazing, compared to regular round nosed bullets. That flat nose literally hammers living things. These bullets are hard and properly lubed and will NOT lead your barrel. Note my velocities from real world "over the counter" revolver s- NOT TEST BARRELS!

    • @Fudmottin
      @Fudmottin 4 роки тому +2

      @@GunSam I guess it's traditional to load target loads to a lower pressure. Nice to know there is no leading. That was always my biggest beef with all lead bullets.
      My understanding with hollow point ammunition is the expansion is intended to simulate a larger caliber. Some energy is wasted in the bullet as it takes work to make it expand. The rest of the energy takes it into the target.
      It's always about where and how big the hole is. ;-)
