I won a costume contest at our church way back in the late 70s with a Rick Baker Incredible Melting Man make-up kit. It was amazing and disgusting. But hey, what else would a nine year old wear to a church Halloween costume party lol

This movie is adorable! I love your channel so much; I figured this week I would go back to some of your older reviews/videos, and this was one of your best! Hilarious, insightful, and fun as usual. You are just too great Cecil!
There is still a Drive in theater near here (well, about an hour drive) that has all night monster marathons in the spring-fall. I've been meaning to check one out.
I saw this film in a theater, late '77 or early '78. It was a second-run theater that only charged a $1 or so. I saw so many movies there, including 3-D movies "House of Wax," "Creature from the Black Lagoon," and "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein." Back then I went to the movies 4 to 5 times per week. These days who can afford to do that? I also saw the strangest triple-bill at a drive-in. Disney's "The Cat from Outer Space," followed by Fox's "Alien," followed by "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Cars with families left after "The Cat from Outer Space." Some left during the chest-bursting scene in "Alien." I made it through all three films.
Jonathan Demme might have filmed the scene at 8:25. He was in the movie as the dumb boyfriend who went into the house after finding the front door's knob was slimy and then was killed. Maybe they needed a fill-in director for a few scenes and he jumped in? The style of having a character talk to the camera is something he's done before. Look at Silence of the Lambs. He did it there numerous times.
I remember this film , watched it when I was very young and it scared the hell out of me. I still remember it now so at 52 it made a lasting impression.
Absolutely. This was very much in line with the old space paranoia flicks of the previous decades. Yeah, Smith had a tough life. She was so pretty. Heroin ruined her life, such a shame.
5:45 Can we give a shout out to Rainbeaux (Cheryl) Smith (the blonde in the photo shoot), who is in the seriously underrated adult musical CINDERELLA (1977) and LEMORA? 11:57 there you go. 2:47 I get what the director was going for, but do you like how much effort was put into the makeup effect... just for the director to hide it? 2:59 can we _also_ point out that there is a coffee maker in near proximity to a _radioactive rotting corpse?!_ _In a Morge where they do this all the time?!_ “ATCHKA! This coffee is hot! And tastes like _shit!_ .... oh, that’s just bits of Ethel.” 3:40 who knew in a movie called THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN that there would be such sick burns. 5:27 I guess you can say that they “blew” their budget on the special effects! 6:21 what? No “well Ted... frankly... I’m stumped”? 6:42 I have to give you credit. All of those songs have an ironic connection to poor Steve. He's just a lonely melting spaceman looking for love. 9:16 I could be wrong, but I believe that’s Jonathan Demme (director of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS). There is a photo of the cut gore scene where you see what the girlfriend is screaming at.
My older brothers took me to see this at our (now closed and demolished) local drive-in back in '77...when they got to the part showing the melting man walking down the hill with the setting sun behind him, they made jokes which sounded remarkably similar to the ones MST3K did during the same scene...imagine my reaction when I got to *this* (6:40)!
(1) The trailer for this movie scared me as a kid. The versions I'm finding on UA-cam and Google searching, though, aren't what I remember. Maybe they messed up the audio, or did something local, but I remember the narrator's voice being way more deep and threatening. I remember some of the nurse running scene in it, and a scene of someone actually melting, more human than 4th stage Steve here, dripping from his chin saying something. I have to wonder if I'm remembering some locally done trailer or if I am remembering a [waking] nightmare from the trailer scaring me. Personally, I imagined our titular character chasing people down and killing them, much like the actual movie, but melting slowly and reforming, both in order to get to them, and needing to because of what happened. (2) When I actually saw the movie, a lot (maybe all) of the scene with Ted seemed weird and disconnected from anything in the movie. "Tracking Steve down" while, as you mention, talking about crackers and going home, and being the only one actually looking. Knowing that this was meant as parody makes a lot of sense. One thing that would explain Ted's reactions (to crackers) as well as his knowledge of Steve needing human tissue to survive and getting stronger as he melts, though, might actually make sense. Steve is, essentially, an atomic horror, like the Incredible Shrinking Man or The Incredible Growing Man or the like. He might be involved because he's supposed to be a character who has dealt with this sort of things before. "Yup, radiation accident. Not the worse I've seen, but we should find him." Being exposes to all that radiation from other cases or research may have melted his own mind a bit. (3) Assuming Steve is getting stronger as he melts, that might account for him being smarter than the average police officer, too. Sure, he's melting and loosing himself to murderous impulses, but he his mind is still in there functioning in it's liquefying form. This makes the final scene even more horrible. He is clearly still moving and conscious as he lays there -- longer than you would hope he'd be. At least he doesn't seem to be in pain for any of it.
In 1978, I saw this feature at the drive-inn. I don't remember the film it showed with (probably one of many sci-fi features I don't recall from that time), but I vividly remember this. I still think it's a great film, even with its weaknesses, but you probably knew that. Once more, excellent review.
Loved the "CSI: Miami " and "Mellow Gold" references but I knew this would be a great episode when you mentioned "Crazy Fat Ethel" in the first 2 minutes ... and when I saw the slimy doorknob victim I randomly thought " Hmmm - guy looks like Jonathan Demme" How did I know your final tag would be the hot soup " AHTCHKA ! "
I would say its more a kin to quatermass experiment in 53 When the spaceship that carried the first successful crew returns to Earth, two of the three astronauts are missing, and the third is behaving strangely. It becomes apparent that an alien presence entered the ship during its flight, and Quatermass and his associates must prevent the alien from destroying the world.
Aaah! Nostalgia bomb; I remember seeing the *novelisation* of this film on the shelf in a second-hand shop in the UK when I was about 8 or 9, 1989 or '90; never seen the film itself but seeing the cover of the book traumatised me for years! hahaha...
MST3K totally slays this epic bad movie. I loved seeing this insane flick in a theater opening weekend when I was just 12. Not many critics liked it but there was one who defended it and still does: Leonard, The Incredible Maltin Man.
"What happens with Steve, never happen with anyone before..." You right, never happend BEFORE, but Takamura nuclear plant in 1997 has a different (very similar) story to tell....
There's actually a lot more humor left in the movie than you might think, albeit gallows humor. The severed head's journey, the ear on the tree, the scene with the elderly couple, all of those are OG humor-scenes. =)
I loved the review here. The National Enquirer gag really brought back memories also. That said, I love this movie. Its bad. but it's also really creepy and effective at times. Is radioactive mental instability such a huge problem that the space program/military/whoever actually needs a 'Psychoradiological Research Center' in a permanent installation for irradiated astronauts to recover in? At 2:34 that's the building Nurse Freakout is radically redesigning the door for.
I think I figured out what superhero powers Steve has - he has the power to... melt. Oh that explains who "Melt Man with the Power to melt".is :P RIP Ted Nelson
This movie really does feel like it's in homage to a late 50's early 60's B but with more teeth, the acting was straight out of the outer limits along with the well meaning character dying tragically due to some one else's fear. Also the robocop melting scene is brutal and awesome. I did research on rainbow Rainbeaux Smith she really had a tough life it's sad really.

Radiation is contagious or not? Damn it man, it's RADIATION! The word it self means to radiate, or give out xD

I bet his children would at least have glowing urine.
It's not contagious, you just don't want to stand close to any source of high radiation, or, even low, if it's for an extended period of time.

Is radioactive mental instability such a huge problem that the space program/military/whoever actually needs a 'Psychoradiological Research Center' in a permanent installation for irradiated astronauts to recover in? At 2:34 that's the building Nurse Freakout is radically redesigning the door for.
I give this movie 2 Ahh-chi'kas up.
Thanks! Yep, got two more for this month.
Man I love your reviews they are hilarious!!! I can safely say I am a big fan.
I think I figured out what superhero powers Steve has - he has the power to... melt. Oh that explains who "Melt Man with the Power to melt".is :P RIP Ted Nelson
4:30 The writer/director's idea of character development.
Amazingly, his stasche survived the initial radiation hit.
I saw this when it came out... in a drive-in. The melting effects were huge news at the time. Shown on the cover of every movie magazine..
Cyrus Karloff scared the hell out of me when I was a kid
Alexander John Rebar 1940-2021 (the actor who played the incredible melting man) R.I.P.
5:32 Thought you were gonna say "looks like a used tampon".
The effects STILL hold up. Which is saying so much for movies these days that look outdated 6 months later. Praise the SCHLOCK!!
Now i have another movie to review for hallowen
This movie looks utterly incomprehensible. Like approaching Breen levels of What the Absolute Fuck.
I love your reviews! They are very funny and encourage me to watch these films :) I remember being a kid and always watching the old Godzilla and Gamera films. Keep it up :)
Definitely.
Duh..I sat thru this whole thing thinking Ted Nelson was Bill Bixby.
That was funny when added sound bits of 70's soft rock songs in your review
