Great video! Heck I was probably right behind you according to your timestamp. Rode this the 1st day it was open in 1987, I was 13. Returned to ride it this last day with my 11 yr old son. I'm now 45. Definitely going to miss this first-of-its-kind ride! Many memories. Thanks Vortex! ❤️
@@BD97lolI was actually the last ever person to ride this ride, on the last day of the ride, before it closed, at like 9:00 or so, we asked them if we could ride it one last time before they closed the ride and they let us. No one believes me when I say it but it is true!
Just looking at the classic Arrow coasters being removed is so saddening. I consider Arrow Dynamics to be one of my favourite manufacturers of all time, because of the legacy they have made since the 50s. I mean they dominated the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and early to mid 90s, before manufacturers came up with more computerized and modern designs. Their rides are honestly such classics, I always think of Arrow coasters when it comes to the classic looping roller coaster. I have two Arrow coasters at my home park of Canada's Wonderland, Vortex (suspended coaster) and Dragon Fire (custom looping coaster), and ever since S&S bought them in the early 2000s, I hope they're able to continue to provide parts necessary to keep the rides running longer, and that's with any Arrow coaster left operating. Arrow coasters are really reliable, so I hope parks can keep their old Arrow coasters running longer. But it does make sense too, I mean Arrow coasters are very outdated, so it might be hard for S&S to continue to make parts for the rides that are still left. I've heard mixed things about Vortex, but I generally hear it's definitely one of the better custom loopers Arrow has made. Vortex will be missed though, RIP (1987-2019)
I only got to ride Vortex once but I really enjoyed it. The haters definitely over exaggerated the roughness of the ride. Sure it was bumpy like any Arrow coaster but it wasnt uncomfortable and the headbanging was something I really didn't find to be a problem on it. I was really saddened to hear that KI was removing it but also very happy I got to finally visit the park and ride it in it's last year of operation. I hope you're right about S&S and they can provide parts for the remaining Arrow coasters and the parks keep them running.
So happy I got to ride this before it closed down. It was rough and a little uncomfortable but it had a certain vintage charm to it. Rest well, Vortex. You had a good run.
That double corkscrew was great- but anything behind the 4th car was torture- old girl was definitely showing its age. I rode it as a kid and loved it, got a migraine and slight whiplash as an adult (in the last row)- so I'm actually indifferent on this one. I would have loved to keep it simply on nostalgia alone but it was definitely its time. Outlived the company that built it! Probably got upwards of 100 rides on it and had a great time on most of them! RIP Vortex
This was my favorite ride at Kings Island. Aside from being fun to ride, it was equally as fun to watch from a park bench. The downhill slope into the double loops was always my favorite part. Double loops are sadly becoming a thing of the past… I miss this ride every time I visit now. (I don’t miss Firehawk one bit, lol.)
When I was ten my dad somehow convinced me to ride this with him! Just last year I had been afraid to step off the pirate ship, let alone be on an actual coaster, but I went with him since he had nostalgia. The first thing I said after the whole thing was “That wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.”
I wish I could say I road it but I was there with my cousin and he wanted to go on it with me but earlier that year my sister and dad went on it and got a bad headache and we had to leave and I didn't get to ride it and now I still feel bad that I ruined the opportunity for me and my cousin that doesn't get to go to KI often 🥺🥹😰😥😢😭🤧🙁😟
I haven't been to kings island in years, but its still heart breaking to see this one is gone, that big blue and orange coaster was an unforgettable part of the park's landscape for me.
I feel so privileged to have ridden the VORTEX too many times to remember (AND), Me and my friend actually rode the original "BAT" that stood where the VORTEX was. How great to have experienced two of the best coasters ever built. Thanks for sharing the video.
Yeah my dad forced me on this at 8 and i cried....then rode every year after...such a rough ride!!! Got a headache every time! Stopped riding in 2013 after my hubby had a stroke the day after we went to KI. Swear either this or the beast had something to do with it. Both very rough rides!
I went to Kings Island in September 2019. I rode the Vortex for the first time and absolutely loved it, and was devastated when I read a month later that they were going to permanently close it...
I remeber i was in PBL when they announced the closure and everyone didn’t believe the guy who said it. We all googled it and saw it was closing and were shocked. I hadnt ridden it at the time because of its infamous reputation but I got a night and day ride on it before it closed. I loved it and I will never forget you old friend
Man. They were really pumping those trains out to have the train on lift before the other one even got to the block brake. That seems to be very rare unless unless you are at Disneyland.
Seeing the land now just empty without it just makes me sad. It'll be really weird not hearing and seeing Vortex and its many sounds. Coming into the park and waiting for rope drop I'd always eagerly await opening and wait to hear the arrow anti rollbacks and it testing over the trees. It just won't be the same without it.
It was old but It left too soon I rode it more times then I could count on the one day I got to ride it for its closing weekend and I payed way too much to go there for its final weekend but it was worth I was kind of crying when i left the park know i would never see it again.
This is at Kings dominion now and people complain about the intensity of Indeterminate 305 with its strongestg force on any roller coaster in the world but this throws one round more
I’ve always loved this coaster and put it in my top 5 at KI. The ride is fine, there was nothing wrong with it. It just wasn’t popular enough. Which I can respect, but it still makes me sad. I’ll always remember this coaster being such a big part of my childhood, I’m 22 and I’ve seen 4 coaster removals of rides I’ve actually ridden (King Kobra doesn’t count, never rode it). Very sad for KI. Crazy to think this was a world record holding coaster and now it’s nothing but scrap metal
Great layout, unfortunately it was done it by those brutal over the shoulder restraints. Every element past the brake run relentlessly banged your head. I’m sorry to see it go for all the fans out there, but I am excited to see the possibilities they can build on that plot now. Maybe an RMC original.
Better is a strong word, Vortex was the best of the best in its day. It should have been maintained and kept but regardless it deserves a strong replacement
@@BD97lol A Custom Arrow Looper of that magnitude would cost a great deal to rebuild. Given how tall and complex it was, there was no saving Vortex for a reasonable amount of money. It was too good for its own good.
As you were coming back into the station, I spotted my children and myself waiting for the last car. Great times. Great vid.
I love how many people that grew up with Vortex got to share a lasting memory with their kids before it was gone
Flecktarn is godly.
Vortex was so fun. Loved this back in the early 90’s!

It's hard to see how few remain. Vortex was great and it had the best drop of any arrow looper.

I know and it killed me to see son of beast go
You know life is short and we need to cherish each fun moments we have
My daughter and I were there that day. The line was long that day. I miss that wonderful Arrow chain lift sound.
They were running all three trains at full capacity that day.

I wanted to preserve that last day I envy you and wish I could have experienced the original bat
One of the first real coasters I ever had the pleasure of riding. I'll miss it but I wont miss the head ache afterwards.

First looping coaster for me even though i never rode it again. Sad to see the Arrow Mega Loopers are a dying breed of coaster.
No idea why UA-cam decided I needed to see this now but. Wow those are great dispatch intervals lol
They were trying to consistently run the ride at full capacity to get as many riders as possible.
So sad I never got to ride this coaster!!
That really stinks, I think everyone has a coaster they never got to ride that they wish they could have.
Same and now its all gone (i think)
I never got to ride Wild Mouse.
You didn't miss much lol. Though it was a classic, it really hurt and was a headbanger.
DynamicCoasters I wish I could’ve rode on the son of the beast but I was only 6 when they demolished it
Damn, I miss this thing.
I will miss The Vortex, it is the first rollercoaster I rode with loops.
I went to Kings Island in September 2019. I rode the Vortex for the first time and absolutely loved it, and was devastated when I read a month later that they were going to permanently close it...
I will forever love this ride! First loop coaster. Had the pleasure of being there during its final days of operation also.
and another arrow megalooper from my bucket-list gone, I am still so sad that I didn't get the chance to ride it.
There's still a few left out there though!
Megaloopers? Theres only 1 left. Viper.
wish I had been able to ride this before it closed down. Unfortunately, I will never get to ride this amazing looking coaster!
Only ride I ever passed out on. Inversion five I was like, "Wait, I don't feel right...". Never got to experience inversion six.

Am gonna miss going up the hill the most
I JUST WISH ANACONDA WENT BEFORE THIS
Agreed, I love them both, but Vortex was vastly superior. I'm sure Anaconda doesn't have much time either.
I know, anaconda sucks!
So glad I got to ride Vortex in 2019 so sad it is gone Vortex was my favorite ride at Kings Island.

Damn do I miss this coaster. Kings Island better put something good there in it's place. RIP Vortex.
A very cool looking steel coaster but it was terribly rough!! I think a new RMC steel/wooden coaster would be a great replacement.

Why they close this ride for??
They should left the station it was iconic and could been reused.
I agree

How did the seatbelts become undone?
There have been no reports of that happening on the coaster.
