Thanks. It helped me with my 1978 Evinrude Outboard....I had a lot of trouble getting the 3 item connectors in...the driveshaft was easy, the supply water tube was difficult and the shift lever almost impossible..Finally my brother came and held the lower unit and controled how fast we pushed it up into the powerhead... the water line then the shift shaft. a real wrestle match!!
Thanks for all the great info!! I seem to be having a challenge getting the shift linkage to go through the new o-ring I installed. Any suggestions? I did lube it prior to trying to install it.
@@haneysgarage2631 I did use oem but the o-ring looked thicker than the original. The new bolts didn’t want to thread right also so I used the old bolts. I’m wondering if I got a mixture of a couple different repair kits and the o-ring is incorrect.
The 1985 20hp that I have has the same lower but I don’t think they are interchangeable with the 90s models but not 100% sure there are 3 different types I believe

Some can be really difficult depending on how often serviced or heavy salt water use.

I use marine grease and slowly slide it in using pressure check to make sure the ring didn't dislodge did you us an oem Johnson/Evinrude rebuild kit.

Want to put a new lower unit on my 1985 to gain the trim tab to make it easier to drive do you know if they will bolt up?
