I just randomly came across this video while looking up some demos of 2.4 shakuhachi music. I saw the name and was like, hey I know that guy...he wrote one of the books I have! I've now had this AHA moment because any of the books I've used are based on a 1.8, while I'm using a 2.4, and all this time I've been HOLDING IT INCORRECTLY! It's late now, but I'm busting my shakuhachi out after I get my morning chores done and trying out my new knowledge. Thanks for this video.
Thanks for showing what fingers hold the Shakuhachi versus cover the holes, I was using my fingers like in a recorder, tin whistle or clarinet, no wonder my fingers could not stretch to reach all the holes for the longer Shakuhachi.
Oh shit! iIm a guitar player that just started Shakuhachi and i was pressing on the holes exactly like you said we do haha. Good to know i'm doing it wrong this early. I'll try a more relaxed approach next time i play . Good video!
Hey, Jon! I noticed that you switched hands on the 2.7 with the offset finger holes. Is that usual, to switch which hand is on top for a longer instrument? I happened to re-listen to the audiobook of Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth" sci-fi book (yeah, I know, Hubbard...but if you think of it as a comedy, or a farce, it's quite enjoyable) and the book was recorded with a full cast and a very intricate soundtrack. They tried to get leitmotifs for each of the characters, as well as using the tonality to set the scene's mood. Of particular note is that a shakuhachi is one of the primary instruments used in the soundtrack. I thought you might want to look that up.
Hi, Oh no! I play lefty and righty. Long story... first righty, then lefty for over a decade, now back to righty. I made the large shakuhachi when I was lefty :) Oh interesting! I wonder who played it.
Hi email is ok from my website though I work so much making Bell Shakuhachi that I struggle to keep up :) Facebook shakuhachi groups are also great resources if I'm too slow, which I usually am. Sorry about that
Thank you for this. I'm sure it will benefit many people. It gives me some definite ideas both as a player and as a teacher.
Excellent instruction video, Jon! Thanks
