In 1966 The Carpenters we're tired of the same old Christmas songs and their college music teacher gave them these lyrics he owned since 1944. Richard Carpenter came up with the tune in 15 minutes. They recorded it in 1970. Incredible!! This is a Timeless song it will never get old. I'm thankful they have tons of video out there of them which is rare back then.

My mom would always sing and record this on cassette tape and send it to my father when Christmas comes. The sacrifice my father did will be forever etched in my heart. The sacrifices of my mom taking care of us while apart from my father is forever with me. This is one christmas song that will always get me. One song I can never sing as I always fold. My mom has gone ahead of us. I feel for my dad. He may never read this but I do love him very much. Now to the song... The lyrics are spot on and the voice... so haunting and beautiful. No. When I was a teen, a had this rich alto voice and a few thought I was pretty close to her. But sinus infections, age and throat surgeries have destroyed my voice. Oh well. I never was close enough! Richard felt that Dusty Springfield was a decent replacement for a few numbers, her voice had a huskieness though, not this clear as a bell, rich deep yet very feminine voice. Karen was alone in greatness.

It was the height of disco but somehow this song was so beautiful and so timeless that despite all of the disco that was popular it just shined. I love this song. They played this on a country classic radio station on Christmars Eve, had been so long since I heard it. Wow, just wow. It doesn't get any better than this for a Christmans classic. Someone on here mentioned how Karen;s voice had such a calming effect, many a soldier in Vietnam was listening! Her angelic voice was being beamed all the way out there, and many soldiers in later years talked about how it got them through the Vietnam War. That's powerful.

The lyrics are not John Bettis their university choir director Frank Pooler wrote the song 20 years prior to Richard doing the music for it.

This song, the original 1970 version brings back fond childhood memories. The mainstream radio stations play the newer version but every now and then they will sneak the original in (and I immediately know the difference). BEAUTIFUL! The first time I heard this song, it was 1970. I was eight years old. It came on the radio and I was mesmerized. The overdubbed flourish of Karen's and Richard's voices at the end brought me to tears that afternoon - and it still does to this day - every time I hear it.

Heard this while watching, the 2016 Hallmark movie A Heavenly Christmas, especially that one part of the movie and this plays.
They played this on a country classic radio station on Christmars Eve, had been so long since I heard it. Wow, just wow. It doesn't get any better than this for a Christmans classic. Someone on here mentioned how Karen;s voice had such a calming effect, many a soldier in Vietnam was listening! Her angelic voice was being beamed all the way out there, and many soldiers in later years talked about how it got them through the Vietnam War. That's powerful.
