One more important item: inflatables are more sensitive to wind. They blow downwind more easily. If you are a child or very light, you can become more at the wind’s mercy. Easy to fix: paddle upwind at the start of the day’s session; glide home at the end.
Doesn't always work! Wind direction can change quickly on the water. I've paddled against the wind and current both ways on my trips atleast 20% of the time.
Switching out all of my boards to inflatable's. Tired of the cracks and doing repairs. Plus the convenience of being able to put them in the trunk of your car is awesome

I have had 3 inflatables and zero issues and a lot of abuse. And 2 hardboards. One with splitters, cracks, even delamination !! - the second I decided to virtually wrap to avoid cracks yet the other day I hit the tip with the paddle and again a small crack. If you buy a good inflatable, it will last for ages. I always pumped mine to maximum pressure and they get hard as a rock. Cover both bords with a cloth or sunshade, don't leave either "cooking" in the hot sun. Try to rinse after salt water use. Don't put your inflable in the bag while humid. Simple.
@@islandvibez I rinse it and let it dry, then I let only a bit of air out since I have a van. I store it in the van inflated, but at 80% or so. Never put a humid board in a bag or rucksack, it needs to be dry first, then you deflate.
After I really got into paddling as my main hobby, I bought one of the 11 foot Explorer ISUPs back in 2017 after owning a hard board for a couple years. I loved it so much, I've ridden it for hundreds of miles since and I couldn't be happier with the transition. The durability, stability and convenience of my inflatable is incredible. For anyone who is worried about making the transition from a hard board to an ISUP, just do it already!
I started with an iSUP and got 3 good years out of it before I had my first and final problem. The seam popped leaving me with a 6" hole. We weren't on the water yet and it was our own fault for leaving the boards in the sun. But after that we bought hardboards. They are a lot different the biggest thing is that with a hardboard YOU WILL GET WET, you're essentially in the water, with an iSUP you have a 4-6" platform above the water. I am 100lbs under the board weight limit and still get wet. It kinda bugged me the first few times because I was used to staying totally dry but now I do like my board and have learned to make peace with the wet. I like the handling of the hardboard way more, yoga is way harder on the hard board. The hardboard is incredibly light. You're going to spend about 10-15 minutes setting up either way, whether you're pumping or strapping /unstrapping a board, and putting away the board bag.
I literally have 18 inflatable paddleboards. I love them because since I have so many I don’t need a whole lot of space to store them. The reason I have so many is because I got one for both me and my wife then decided to get one for each of our kids. No I don’t have 18 kids. Lol. I had 6 boards at that time but since then I have decided to open a business from my home where I rent the paddleboards out so that is why I purchased so many and I got a good deal on them at the time. Next year my son and I are going to start doing classes for people that want to learn. I have never owned a hard paddleboard so I can’t really say which one is better but I do know that it’s a lot easier to store them away during the winter when you have limited space. It’s also easier to get them to the water because I can literally fit them all into my truck. They are really durable and another nice thing is I have several kayak seats that can connect right to the D-Rings of the paddleboard. Another thing is I ended up buying a couple electric paddleboard pumps that plug right into the 12V power socket of my truck. They also make cordless SUP pumps so that you can inflate them right down by the water. The hand pumps just take to long in my opinion. As a reminder and I’m not 100% sure if it matters but during the winter I don’t leave the inflatable boards outside. I bring them in because I feel as though freezing temps can damage the material. This is just what I worry about. I live in a area that during the winter time it’s below zero a lot. If for some reason I have no choice but to leave them in the cold then I notice they do get really stiff so I take them in to warm them up for a day or so before inflating. I just feel like that helps. Again I’m not sure this matters or not but when you have a lot of money wrapped up in something then you want to take care of it. That’s just my take anyway.
How cool! I have just started out and I'm contemplating getting another board for whatever friend wants to hang. I can definitely see how addicting it is and see how you have come to own so many. 🎉🎉
Good review straight to the point. Not all inflatables are the same. We got cheap ones first and they performed horribly. After watching Trip Smith on UA-cam camp off of his, we went with Blackfins like his. Big difference. Not interested in storing hardboard, we have kayaks that take up enough room.

I purchased kayak (non inflatable) last year and it was way too heavy for me to place it on top of my SUV and regret purchasing it and never used it yet. So I purchased inflatable paddle board and just came here today. It looks like this was what I needed! I am going to test it with my dog in few days.
Definitely a challenge to paddle on an inflatable when it’s breezy on the water..can’t really see using it in the bay of the ocean. Also the hard board definitely is faster than inflatable. My next purchase will be a hard board.

Going to get a hard board. We have had 3 paddle boards pop under inflated and out of the sun. Even had a custom cover made for them. The glue just does not hold. We think this bc the first time we inflate it and take it in the sun the glue lines are visible from where they were initially at. Isle was amazing with customer service and replaced the first 2 for free we used them only twicep. But just not worth the stress of always worrying if they will pop. We love everything else about the inflatables. He bag is nice, the boards are comfy and have lots of storage and handles. Need to improve this glue and they would have the best inflatables. But if in the sun a lot and have good storage space get a hard board.

My 3 year old inflatable popped over 4th of july weekend. Gauge said we were still in the green psi area! Unfortunately outside of warranty. Looking to replace and now debating whether to get another inflatable or to buy a hard board.
I have a glider epoxy board, they are extremely sensitive to direct sunlight ie one of mine warped badly. Something to consider before spending $900 dollars!!

We have inflatables because of storage reasons and they are OK, but I have rented hard boards and they are so much nicer to paddle, specially on waves. The inflatables are perfectly fine for canals and lakes though, they are light too! So are very easy to carry.

Is there anything I can do to make my inflatable sup more stable on the water? I notice when I paddle my board wants to tip sideways and throw me in the water where as I’ve never felt the board tilt sideways any time I’ve ever used a solid board
Stupid question but I’m new to this. Can you still transport an inflatable SUP already inflated, ready to go, on top of a SUV or is it too susceptible to punctures from bugs or road debris at high speeds?
I like hardboards more than isups. I feel more one with the elements with a hard board its better in the water especially when it's windy. If I would have a car and a celler or at least a hous by a lake I would always choose hardboard over isup.
Great video but I am still not sure what to get my problems in making a decision are Price difference? Durability? And do either need servicing? And what brands are trustworthy since I have seen a lot of bad reviews of some brands and mostly have the same problems
So I am still on the fence about what type I should get for one main reason. I will likely have my 70lb dog on the board with me. Would an inflatable hold up to his nails even if I do my best to keep them trimmed. Would hate to puncture the board while I'm out on the lake.
For flowing water ISUP hands down (creeks streams and rivers) For cruising still water especially if its windy Hard Board is better On the ocean Hard Board can catch waves ISUPS not so much. You can absolutely strap ISUPS on your roof. We've stacked them four high and drive no problem.
Good call outs! We sometimes strap iSUPs on the roof as well, just have to be careful not to leave out in hot sun or they can become over-pressurized. We recommend taking a little air out when transporting this way.
Where we kayak, there are lots of logs and other debris sticking up from the water. This makes me concerned about inflatables. Can they withstand that?
Yes, they are very durable, similar construction and materials to a whitewater raft. Of course it is possible to puncture them, but very uncommon for every day paddling. They can take a lot of abuse!
I kayak down some creeks all the time where I live, sometimes there’s branches sticking out of the water or some fallen trees, what board is recommended? I don’t want a branch or something to pop the inflatable.
ISLE boards feature Air-Tech Fusion construction. The outer skin is similar in durability to that of a whitewater raft, so sticks and branches would typically not be an issue. Of course a sharp object can puncture any inflatable, especially if you hit it at speed, so you do want to be careful and avoid sharp objects.
5 min, double pumps faster. not long at all and plus you can take breaks if you on your own if got a partner even faster. double pumps you dont need help, really.
Inflatables are more buoyant, so will float higher up off the water and give more capacity. A board with a full length deck pad is great so kids can use the space up at the nose of the board. Number one tip for taking out toddlers or any kids is they must wear a life jacket!
John we definitely recommend using an electric pump, which we offer as an accessory. Be very careful with air compressors as they can overinflate quickly if you don't watch the gauge!

Where are they made and why are they so popular? And the other question I have is how difficult is it to get it back in the bag I mean, do you really have to fold it up just perfect and have it go in there or do you know or is it in a way that I have to be really particular and how I fold it or you know as long as it’s close it’s good to go
We do make both inflatables and hard boards. Our hard boards are made in a few different locations in Asia. All inflatables are made in China, which is the single source of inflatables for the entire industry because the complete supply chain is there and nowhere else. We continuously look for new locations for production but at this time this is the reality for the entire inflatable paddle board industry. As for folding the inflatables back up, it is quite easy to re-pack them as we size our bags to provide extra room so it's not a challenge. Lots of options to consider at your size. Depends on what you're looking to do with the board, but you're right in the size range to fit our 10'6 Pioneer, 11' Explorer, Pro Series 10'6 Pioneer and 12' Explorer, and the 11'6 Switch.
Inflatables are GREAT for beginners! They're easy to transport, you don't have to worry about damaging them (no dings) and our Pioneer is super stable for beginners up to 285lbs. The one thing about inflatables is you do have to take a few minutes to inflate them. Some people don't like the extra work involved with a manual pump, so our electric pumps are very popular!

You'll need a schraeder valve attachment for the compressor- Amazon or Harbor Freight/Home Depot should have them for 5 to 10 bucks..If you have a portable compressor, it will take almost 10 minutes to inflate and may overheat.

I know this is an old video, but I hope someone helps. I am starting a weight loss program for obese people. Dr. suggests water sports, because they have less change for joint and falling injuries. I need a board that will support a person of 500-600 lbs., so it would need a 7-800 lb capacity.
This video misses two major factors: Weight, and Buoyancy. Inflatables tend to be lighter and more buoyant, therefore easier for beginners. Solids on the other hand can be quite heavy (like Bōte) and not as stable for beginners. Nevertheless, what can be inflated can always deflate or tear unexpectedly. Solids are built pretty tough and should last longer.
Durability has a few different components to it. Inflatables are VERY resistant to "dings" or damage that is caused by the typical impacts due to dropping your board or hitting it against the ground, walls, vehicles, etc. (very often during transport, not on the water!). You can also run over one of our inflatables with a vehicle and it won't pop, which a hard board would be broken in half. So that is where inflatables win vs. hard boards for durability. This means you won't have to worry about repairing fiberglass as you would for a hard board in the event of a ding. But to your point, inflatables can be punctured, so you have to take care to avoid extremely sharp objects like nails, oyster beds, etc.
Which Is better for dog tag alongside? I would imagine that their nails could potentially pop the inflatable, also with me being 235lbs and the dog 75 would I need the full wood for added weight load?
Inflatables are extremely durable and dog nails won't puncture the PVC material. If your dog has sharp nails, it could potentially damage the traction pad, but that won't affect the integrity of the board.
You forgot something very important. It's the damage factor. iSUP' s are just "Air Mattresses" with high pressure air in it. The smallest hole marks the end of your iSUP. Repairs are often expensive, exhausting and not successful.
Yes that's a part of the trade-off - inflatables have ease of storage and transport to and from the water, vs. quick and easy to launch once at the water (no inflation time) with hard boards.
You can put the board on the roof facing either way, but by putting the board on top fin first, the fin acts as a fail-safe in case the straps loosen (the strap will catch on the fin).

You cannot drag an inflatable paddleboard against rocks. Don't even try it. I don't know why this company would even show such a thing - that is one of the stupidest and worst things you can do with your inflatable. You will instantly regret it.
I own both. It's convenient for me to have a hard board because I live right by a lake, but I travel with my inflatable 95% of the time.

A simple factor - weight - makes the hard boad more stable since it is much heavier and the center of gravity is lower when you stand on it

Your hardboard might delaminate or crack fast than you can blink an eye...
I bought an ISLE Explorer 11'6, and I love it. Great quality, great design!
Also. Inflatables are cheaper. You can also do what I do and leave the inflatable inflated , no need to deflate if you have a rack/ trailer

same thing happened to my Fanatic. Happens to all of them. Mine delaminated just 20 min in the sun. (I slept in).

I need a really hard durable one for when I enter those really tight spots. Gonna need to be really stiff for those areas.
A major obvious thing not mentioned is non car owners, for whom inflatable is pretty much the only option. Unless they have storage near water.

I like hardboards more than isups. I feel more one with the elements with a hard board its better in the water especially when it's windy. If I would have a car and a celler or at least a hous by a lake I would always choose hardboard over isup.

Inflatable for me 5 minutes to setup and 4 minutes to wipe dry and put in bag have in my car done. They make them pretty 👍🏻 nice

Great video but I am still not sure what to get my problems in making a decision are Price difference? Durability? And do either need servicing? And what brands are trustworthy since I have seen a lot of bad reviews of some brands and mostly have the same problems
So I am still on the fence about what type I should get for one main reason. I will likely have my 70lb dog on the board with me. Would an inflatable hold up to his nails even if I do my best to keep them trimmed. Would hate to puncture the board while I'm out on the lake.
Place a non slip rubber mat lining on the surface...works well with my cat.
For flowing water ISUP hands down (creeks streams and rivers)
For cruising still water especially if its windy Hard Board is better
On the ocean Hard Board can catch waves ISUPS not so much.
You can absolutely strap ISUPS on your roof. We've stacked them four high and drive no problem.
Good call outs! We sometimes strap iSUPs on the roof as well, just have to be careful not to leave out in hot sun or they can become over-pressurized. We recommend taking a little air out when transporting this way.
@@Islesurfboards i only put 12-13 psi in mine. I ruptured my 1st isup by pumping to 15 psi and letting it sit in the sun for a few hours
What about stability are there any differences in stability?
Where we kayak, there are lots of logs and other debris sticking up from the water. This makes me concerned about inflatables. Can they withstand that?
Yes, they are very durable, similar construction and materials to a whitewater raft. Of course it is possible to puncture them, but very uncommon for every day paddling. They can take a lot of abuse!
I kayak down some creeks all the time where I live, sometimes there’s branches sticking out of the water or some fallen trees, what board is recommended? I don’t want a branch or something to pop the inflatable.
ISLE boards feature Air-Tech Fusion construction. The outer skin is similar in durability to that of a whitewater raft, so sticks and branches would typically not be an issue. Of course a sharp object can puncture any inflatable, especially if you hit it at speed, so you do want to be careful and avoid sharp objects.

Super easy! Just push down the valve pin and all the air will release.

5 min, double pumps faster. not long at all and plus you can take breaks if you on your own if got a partner even faster. double pumps you dont need help, really.

Any tips on hard shell vs. inflatable when taking toddlers on with you?
Inflatables are more buoyant, so will float higher up off the water and give more capacity. A board with a full length deck pad is great so kids can use the space up at the nose of the board. Number one tip for taking out toddlers or any kids is they must wear a life jacket!
One thing is for sure I'd be using an air compressor to inflate that thing. I'm to old for a draconian hand pump! 😆
John we definitely recommend using an electric pump, which we offer as an accessory. Be very careful with air compressors as they can overinflate quickly if you don't watch the gauge!

So do you guys also make the inflatable paddle boards as well or do you not make them? Where are they made and why are they so popular? And the other question I have is how difficult is it to get it back in the bag I mean, do you really have to fold it up just perfect and have it go in there or do you know or is it in a way that I have to be really particular and how I fold it or you know as long as it’s close it’s good to go
We do make both inflatables and hard boards. Our hard boards are made in a few different locations in Asia. All inflatables are made in China, which is the single source of inflatables for the entire industry because the complete supply chain is there and nowhere else. We continuously look for new locations for production but at this time this is the reality for the entire inflatable paddle board industry.
As for folding the inflatables back up, it is quite easy to re-pack them as we size our bags to provide extra room so it's not a challenge. Our users guide videos walk through the deflation and re-packing process so that is something worth watching!

Is an inflatable a good choice for a complete beginner?
Inflatables are GREAT for beginners! They're easy to transport, you don't have to worry about damaging them (no dings) and our Pioneer is super stable for beginners up to 285lbs. The one thing about inflatables is you do have to take a few minutes to inflate them. Some people don't like the extra work involved with a manual pump, so our electric pumps are very popular!
Can you still use an iSup to surf?
YES (within certain limits) but yes, I do and you can.
What about the PRICE differences? Am seeing hard x3 times more expensive than inflateable... Wazzup?!

You'll need a schraeder valve attachment for the compressor- Amazon or Harbor Freight/Home Depot should have them for 5 to 10 bucks..If you have a portable compressor, it will take almost 10 minutes to inflate and may overheat.

creativity is the answer. Anything is possible.maybe get i sup that holds 400+ pounds if heavey, their are isups 550 pound hold. depends on how much you weight and how much stuff you want in your cooler or fishing?>

I know this is an old video, but I hope someone helps. I am starting a weight loss program for obese people. Dr. suggests water sports, because they have less change for joint and falling injuries. I need a board that will support a person of 500-600 lbs., so it would need a 7-800 lb capacity.

This video misses two major factors:
Weight, and Buoyancy.
Inflatables tend to be lighter and more buoyant, therefore easier for beginners.
Solids on the other hand can be quite heavy (like Bōte) and not as stable for beginners.
Nevertheless, what can be inflated can always deflate or tear unexpectedly. Solids are built pretty tough and should last longer.
I have an iflatable. I store it inflated. I rarely ever roll it up.
How are we to believe that the inflatable paddle board is more durable?
Durability has a few different components to it. Inflatables are VERY resistant to "dings" or damage that is caused by the typical impacts due to dropping your board or hitting it against the ground, walls, vehicles, etc. (very often during transport, not on the water!). You can also run over one of our inflatables with a vehicle and it won't pop, which a hard board would be broken in half. So that is where inflatables win vs. hard boards for durability. This means you won't have to worry about repairing fiberglass as you would for a hard board in the event of a ding. But to your point, inflatables can be punctured, so you have to take care to avoid extremely sharp objects like nails, oyster beds, etc.

Which Is better for dog tag alongside? I would imagine that their nails could potentially pop the inflatable, also with me being 235lbs and the dog 75 would I need the full wood for added weight load?
Inflatables are extremely durable and dog nails won't puncture the PVC material. If your dog has sharp nails, it could potentially damage the traction pad, but that won't affect the integrity of the board.
You forgot something very important. It's the damage factor. iSUP' s are just "Air Mattresses" with high pressure air in it. The smallest hole marks the end of your iSUP. Repairs are often expensive, exhausting and not successful.

Hard boards are the longest standing-- the original SUP. Inflatables are taking the lead within the industry and more people are getting ISUPS!

Yes that's a part of the trade-off - inflatables have ease of storage and transport to and from the water, vs. quick and easy to launch once at the water (no inflation time) with hard boards.

Why put the board the wrong way on top of the car?
You can put the board on the roof facing either way, but by putting the board on top fin first, the fin acts as a fail-safe in case the straps loosen (the strap will catch on the fin).

You cannot drag an inflatable paddleboard against rocks. Don't even try it. I don't know why this company would even show such a thing - that is one of the stupidest and worst things you can do with your inflatable. You will instantly regret it.
